Discover Pimlico

Four kilometres south-west of Townsville’s CBD is the small inner suburb of Pimlico. In the late 1880s, a subdivision bordered by Kings Road, Palmerston and Grosvenor Streets and Fulham Road, was offered for sale by the Pimlico Estate.

After the subdivision, there was little or no growth with only a population of 77 inhabitants recorded in 1911. During the war, a substantial amount of housing was erected, but there were considerable empty spaces left over for the post-war housing boom.

In 1956, there was the removal of the Church of England from Hermit Park to Latchford Street, while in 1959, Townsville’s second high school was opened. This school was called Pimlico High, but was actually in neighbouring Gulliver. On opening, there were six teachers and 168 students. Originally, classes were conducted at the Townsville Show Grounds in the Exhibition Hall, but by April, the students moved to the present location. The Mater Hospital was moved to Fulham Road, Pimlico in 1962. This hospital was originally in West End.

On Pimlico’s northern boundary in Woolcock Street the large Castletown shopping complex was opened in 1981. This shopping centre has two supermarkets and 80 other department stores. Woolcock Street is quite a busy road as it links to a river crossing. Other busy roads are Fulham, Bayswater and Kings roads, all passing through or adjoining Pimlico.

There is a 20 hectare Anderson Park, with an arboretum consisting of lovely specimens of pandanus.
