Let’s face it: your administrative staff are part of your team and without their contribution, you won’t be able to completely focus on all those things that matter most.
With this in mind, don’t hesitate to show appreciation to your hardworking office professionals – your secretary, your executive assistant, receptionist, personal assistant, administrative assistant, file clerk, or office assistant. The support they provide is indispensable. So on their special day, celebrated every first Friday of May, make sure you express appreciation for all the work that they do.
Administrative Professionals’ Day
Secretary’s Day got a new professional name; it is now called the Administrative Professional’s Day to cover all positions under the administrative support staff. This celebration started after World War II in America where there was a shortage of skilled administrative personnel. The National Secretaries Association was formed to attract workers in this field and to also recognize the contribution of administrative personnel not just to businesses but also to the economy.
The official celebration started in 1952 and isn’t just a single day but a week called the National Secretaries Week. One day from that week was designated as the National Secretaries’ Day. In 1981, the celebration was labeled as the Professional Secretaries Week and in 2000 it became Administrative Professionals Week to include a range of job titles with administrative support tasks.
This day is celebrated on different dates around the world. In Australia, the celebration date is set on the first Friday of May by the Australian Institute of Office Professionals (AIOP).

Express your gratitude for your assistants’ dedication through a thoughtful gift like fresh flowers. Include a simple note saying that her hard work doesn’t go unnoticed. You can get a little more specific, too, if you’d like, and say something about how she keeps your office or business going, or how she made your work life easier given the scheduling, organising, and coordinating tasks that she does.
Your sincere message and a little fresh flower gift are enough to make her feel important, encouraged, and empowered.
Lily’s Florist has a wide range of bouquets and flower arrangements that you can get to celebrate Secretary’s Day. In the language of flowers, chrysanthemums, gerberas, and hydrangeas are the blooms that say “thank you.” Pick a floral ensemble with these flowers or get a mixed arrangement filled with bright, vivid blooms.
You can also include a special treat like a box of chocolates or a pampering gift hamper. A book written by your secretary’s favourite author would also make a nice little token of gratitude.
Take this day to celebrate the presence of the trustworthy and dependable staff who support the office and your business. Their roles have become more demanding and complex and giving back through a simple thank-you can help them realize that you care about them and you value the work they do.
