Bestsellers

The cheapest thing on this page is the hardest one to get right.

You came here with a number in your head. The card does not carry a price, so whoever opens the door cannot tell whether you spent $42.95 or the top of the range. They just see flowers made up by hand that morning.

A single rose has nowhere to hide. I carried plenty of them to front doors around Kingscliff between 2006 and 2010, when Andrew and I still ran the deliveries ourselves, and I will admit I preferred the big bunches. A dozen forgives one ordinary bloom. One does not.

The person you are sending to is having an ordinary Tuesday and you are somewhere else. Flowers do not close that gap. They put something of yours in a room you cannot get to.

Before you default to roses

Where the money goes furthest

People arrive looking for the rose and a good number leave with gerberas. The three wrapped gerberas at $53.50 carry more ratings than anything else in this range, comfortably past a hundred.

Qualified florist · 15 years on the bench

Gerbera stems are hollow and thick, so they draw water faster than a rose manages. The blooms open flat and hold there. Three of them fill a vase where the same number of roses read as separate heads on sticks. No fragrance either, which people work out only after sending something scented into a shared ward.

Roses are the safe pick. For the money, down the cheaper end, the gerberas do more, and one good stem in paper reads as deliberate rather than thrifty.

"I ordered Gerberas for a friend in hospital and she was thrilled. Her arrangement was much admired by staff and visitors, and were taken home with her as fresh as the day they arrived."

The first week

What happens after it gets there

Anna

Qualified florist · conditioning and vase life

Wrapped products are a job for whoever receives them: scissors and a vase before they go anywhere. A vase product arrives finished, and at $60.50 you can have either for the same money. For a ward or an office, take the vase. From what our florists see, the wrapped ones sit in their paper until a visitor brings a jug.

Whatever arrives, keep it off the kitchen bench. Ripening fruit gives off ethylene gas, which a cut flower reads as the signal to finish up: petals shed early, buds that were going to open never get there. Beside the fruit bowl you lose three or four days against the same stems two metres away.

Gerberas go first, around day four in a warm room and a good deal longer in air conditioning, which is why they do well on a ward. The lilies are still cracking new buds at day seven. Same money, second week.

Ordering

How a small order gets made and moved

Andrew and I answered the phones from 2006 to 2013, and on single-stem orders the question was always some version of "is one enough". It was, nearly every time. The ones who worried hardest were sending to someone who would have found a dozen mortifying.

Same day

Order by 2pm weekdays or 10am Saturday. A florist near the delivery address builds the arrangement and runs it out the same day.

Sundays

None. The wholesale markets are shut, so Sunday stock has sat an extra day.

Delivery

$16.95. We carry part of that fee ourselves, because the run to the door usually costs the florist more than it collects.

After you order

The wait for the photograph

Most people do not hear back straight away, and the silence is not a verdict. New mothers are asleep. Patients are on medication. Half the time the photograph comes the next day with an apology attached.

The flowers have already done their work at the other end whether anyone has thought to text you about it or not. If something did go wrong, ring 1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm weekdays and 10am Saturdays. A couple of snaps from different angles sorts it fastest.
