Fresh Flowers to Bungalow, Delivered Today

Siobhan here. You are probably not in Cairns right now. Most people ordering flowers to Bungalow are interstate or further, and you are trusting a stranger to walk in on your behalf. Someone in Cairns Hospital across the Esplanade, a birthday in one of the units along Mulgrave Road. You cannot be there, so the flowers go instead. I get that.

Flowers N Lace in Bungalow was our seventh partner florist, back in 2008. We built her a website, same as the others, because none of them had one, and passed her every order that came through by phone or online. That was the model. Cairns Hospital is walking distance from where that partnership started, and the florist covering Bungalow now delivers to that front desk most weeks. The staff know the process. Your flowers will not get lost between reception and the ward.

What Sells in Bungalow and Why

Florists Choice Get Well Arrangement

Anna: Boxed in foam, so it travels upright and arrives ready for a bedside locker without needing a vase. Cairns Hospital wards are tight. This earns its bench space.

Anna: The florist picks muted tones, soft whites, creams. Foam base means it stands on its own at a front door or on a kitchen table. No vase scramble for a grieving family.

Bright Mixed Gerberas Bunch
Bright Mixed Gerbera's Bunch

Anna: Gerberas tolerate Cairns humidity better than roses. Thick stems, broad petals, and they photograph well at the door. Good birthday or celebration pick for this climate.

Anna: Some of these stems grow within an hour of the florist's bench. Banksia, leucadendron, grevillea. They handle the heat because they evolved in it. Two weeks in a vase, easily.

Bungalow's Wholesale Market and What It Means for Your Flowers

Anna, Qualified Florist

Most regional cities in Australia rely entirely on stems trucked from the big markets in Melbourne or Sydney. Twenty-four to forty-eight hours on the road, minimum. By the time those roses reach a florist's cool room in, say, Townsville or Mackay, they have lost a day of vase life before anyone touches them. Bungalow is different. The Cairns Flower Market on Scott Street sources from both the southern markets and from growers in Far North Queensland who are thirty minutes up the road. Heliconias, gingers, birds of paradise, orchids, tropical foliage. Same-day supply. A woman called from Hobart once, wanting tropical flowers for her sister in Cairns. She assumed we would fly roses up from Melbourne. I steered her toward a mixed native and tropical bunch. The stems were cut that morning, sourced locally, and the florist had them built and delivered before lunch. Her sister sent a photo three days later and they still looked like they had just come in.

That freshness gap compounds in heat. A rose that spent two days on a truck and then sits on a Bungalow doorstep for an hour in February is a three-day arrangement at best. A heliconia sourced from a farm near Gordonvale and delivered the same morning can last two weeks. The maths is not complicated, but it surprises people who are used to ordering from interstate.

How Your Order Gets to Bungalow

A florist near Bungalow sources stems from the same market that sits in the suburb. Scott Street, early morning. That proximity between the bench and the supply is why the flowers are fresher here than in most delivery corridors in Australia.

What to Send to Bungalow

The products above cover the most common reasons people order flowers to this part of Cairns. This section is about getting the details right: timing, addressing, what to write on the card, and what to do when you are not sure. If you are looking for sympathy flowers, start with the second card below.

Sending Get Well Flowers to Cairns Hospital

Your person is in hospital and you are not in Cairns. The flowers need to find them without you being there to hand them over. Cairns Hospital on the Esplanade is walking distance from Bungalow, and from what our florists have seen, flowers go to the main reception desk. Staff log them and walk them to the ward, usually within a few hours of drop-off. Put the patient's full name and ward number on the card. If you do not know the ward, call the switchboard. For the message, "Thinking of you. Hope you are on the mend" is plenty.

Anna, Qualified Florist

Day two is better than day one for hospital flowers. Admission day is chaos and your arrangement ends up sitting behind a desk longer. Send the morning after, request morning delivery, and choose a boxed arrangement so the nurses do not need to find a vase. Skip lilies in a shared ward. The fragrance carries.

Sympathy and Funeral Flowers

You are organising flowers for someone who has lost a person they loved. The first decision is where the flowers go: the family's home or the funeral service. For the home, address them to the family and deliver within two or three days. For the service, address them to the funeral director by name and include the date. Keep the card short. "Thinking of your family" is enough.

Cairns has a significant Sorry Business practice. Funeral flowers for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families vary by community and language group. If you are unsure, one of our partner florists near Cairns can guide you on colours and presentation, or you can ask the family directly.

I processed hundreds of sympathy orders from the Pottsville office. The pattern was consistent: people calling from interstate, sometimes in tears, sometimes flat and practical, and they needed someone to take over. Address, suburb, funeral home name, done. Three minutes on the phone and the weight it lifted was visible even down the line.

Send Get Well Flowers to Bungalow
Birthday Flowers When You Cannot Be There

The birthday is today and you are somewhere else. A lot of the birthday orders to Bungalow come from interstate, and the anxiety is always the same: will they arrive on time, will someone be home. Bungalow has a lot of units now, especially along Mulgrave Road and Aumuller Street, so leave a delivery note if the building has an intercom or a shared entrance. "Leave at the front door" or "try the buzzer for unit 4" saves a missed delivery. For the card, keep it simple. "Happy birthday. Wish I could be there" says everything.

The florist will try twice. If nobody answers, they leave flowers in a safe spot out of direct sun and let us know. You will get that sorted before the birthday is over.

Earliest realistic delivery is mid-morning. I used to get calls from people who ordered at 9am and expected flowers by 10. The florist still needs to source stems, build the order, and fit it into a delivery run. Three to four hours between ordering and arrival is normal. For a birthday surprise timed to a specific moment, order the day before and request morning delivery. That one adjustment makes it work almost every time.

Just Checking In

You heard something, or you have not heard anything for too long, and a phone call feels like too much. You might not even know which category this falls under. It does not matter. Thinking of you flowers do not need a reason. For the card, "Just thinking of you" works. Anything longer risks saying the wrong thing. Keep the colours soft if you are unsure of the situation, or bright if you know it is welcome news. Bungalow has one of the highest rates of single-person households in Cairns. A lot of people here live alone. The flowers might be the only thing that arrives at their door that week.

They might not call you back straight away. That does not mean the flowers were wrong. Sometimes the gesture sits on a kitchen bench for three days before someone picks up the phone.

Anna handled a lot of these calls from the Pottsville office.

A bloke in Perth rang once. Had not spoken to his brother in Cairns for two years. No falling out, just life. He did not want a card message, just flowers. I talked him into the natives bunch because his brother was, in his words, "not a roses bloke." He rang back a week later to say they had spoken for the first time in two years. The flowers were still on the table.

Not sure what to send?

None of the categories above matched. Fine. You do not need a reason to send flowers.

The Australian Natives Bunch is a safe pick for Bungalow. Some of those stems grow within an hour of the florist's bench. They handle the humidity, they sit well in any room for a fortnight, and nobody has ever looked at a banksia and thought it was the wrong flower. Gender-neutral, occasion-neutral.

How to Order Flowers to Bungalow

Phone

1300 360 469
7am to 6pm weekdays
10am Saturdays
Or order online any time.

Same Day Cutoff

2pm weekdays, 10am Saturdays. No Sunday delivery. Sunday orders queue for Monday morning, which is actually ideal for hospital deliveries at the start of the week.

Delivery $16.95

Flat rate, subsidised. The distance between the florist and most Bungalow addresses is short, but the $16.95 covers the entire Cairns corridor from Gordonvale to Palm Cove. We absorb the difference.

Hospital Delivery in Bungalow

Cairns Hospital on the Esplanade is the main delivery point for this suburb. Flowers go to the front reception, not the bedside. Ward staff distribute from there. In our experience, allow two to three hours between drop-off and the patient seeing them. Include the full name and ward number. If the patient has been discharged before delivery, hospitals generally do not redirect flowers to a home address. Ring us on 1300 360 469 if you need to update the delivery after ordering. Order hospital flowers before 2pm today.

"I was very happy how prompt you were in sending flowers to my sister and was very impressed when you tried to deliver and hospital said she was not there, but your lady rang me and we got it sorted. I would recommend your florist shop to others."

Send an Arrangement to Bungalow

This is what hospital delivery actually looks like. Not a smooth handoff at the bedside. A drop-off at reception, a patient who has been moved or discharged, and a florist who rings the sender to sort it out instead of walking away.

Anna on the Florists Choice Get Well Arrangement

The Florists Choice Get Well Arrangement is boxed in foam. It stands upright on its own, so when reception staff are carrying it between wards or leaving it on a nurses' station, it does not tip or spill. The florist picks stems that sit low and compact. In Cairns heat, foam holds water longer than a vase does, which matters when the arrangement is sitting in a hospital corridor waiting for someone to walk it to the right bed. Pam's sister ended up getting her flowers. Most people do. The gap between drop-off and delivery is where the anxiety lives, and it is almost always shorter than it feels.

After You Order

Your order goes to a florist in or near Bungalow. They source stems, in many cases from the wholesale market on Scott Street, build your flowers fresh, and deliver by hand the same day. The corridor is compact. Most Bungalow deliveries are done within a few hours of confirmation.

If anything needs changing after you have ordered, ring us on 1300 360 469 (7am to 6pm weekdays, 10am Saturdays) or email [email protected]. One conversation, not a ticket system. We pick up the phone.

Andrew, Siobhan's partner and the other half of Lily's Florist

The area has more units than it used to (a lot more, a lot fewer workers' cottages), so the florist covering Bungalow adjusts for that. If the recipient is not home, they leave the flowers in a safe spot out of direct sun and let us know. If it is a hospital order and the patient has moved wards, we chase it. The phone number above is for exactly that.

Most people hear from the recipient before they hear from us. That phone call, the surprised one, is the whole point.

Bungalow is where the Cairns chapter of this business started. 2008, a florist named Flowers N Lace, a website we built for her, and every order we could send. Eighteen years later, Andrew and I still run Lily's Florist from a home office on the NSW North Coast, two daughters who are now taller than both of us, and a network of 800+ partner florists across Australia.

We bought a flower shop in Kingscliff in 2006 with zero experience and a baby on the way. The accountant told us not to. We did it anyway. The full story is here and it took us a month to write.
