Birthday Flowers to Greta, Same Day if You Beat 2pm
A birthday order has to explain itself at the door. Ask for something bright and the person taking delivery knows what it is before anything gets opened. In by 2pm on a weekday and the flowers are at the house that afternoon, made up that morning by a florist in or close to Greta. Get-well orders are worth asking the family about first, because not one of the four hospitals a Greta patient might be in is in Greta. In spring and summer the run goes early, because the air out this way is drier than the coast and a doorstep is a poor place to wait, so tell us where to leave the flowers if the house is empty.

Thanks Simone. Flowers on their own could be sympathy or an apology just as easily as a birthday. The balloon settles that from the doorway, so your daughter knew what she was looking at before she got anywhere near the card.
Not much to it, but it saves a moment of guessing. Glad the one that went up to Greta was a good one.

In our experience a Greta admission lands at one of four hospitals, and not one of them is inside the postcode. Six funeral directors, four other towns.
Who makes it
No shop of ours in Greta. A florist working this stretch of highway builds the order that morning.
The weather station up the road is at Greta's own height, and it reads dry.

People send flowers into the Hunter expecting coastal weather. Greta does not get it. The station at Cessnock Airport is sixty-seven metres up, near enough Greta's own height, and its afternoon humidity falls to forty-two per cent by September.
Dry air does not wilt a flower the way heat does. It pulls water out through the petal faster than the stem replaces it, so the damage starts at the edge. Leucadendron, waxflower, chrysanthemum and carnation hold through it. Hydrangea and sweet pea do not. An order looking tired on day two is usually that. Flowers going out here want an early run and a loose wrap.

The Two Orders We See Most, and Where They Land
Two orders come into Greta more than any others, and only one of them ends up at a Greta address. A box arrangement covers both.
Which Hospital Are They Actually In?
Someone is in hospital and you have the town, not the ward.
Cessnock is twenty-one kilometres south, the Maitland hospital is at Metford, Singleton is west, and anything serious goes to John Hunter at Newcastle. Ask which one first. We drove those runs ourselves out of the Kingscliff shop from 2006 to 2009 and the pattern has not moved since: hospital flowers stop at main reception, and without a ward number they sit there.
Send a box, not a hand tie. A ward has no spare vase and nobody spare to fill one. Skip lilies, the pollen travels on staff clothing.
Nobody Home in Greta on a Twelve-Hour Roster
The birthday is today and the house is empty until the shift ends.
One worker in eight here is in coal and most drive out of town, so a weekday knock meets a closed door. No intercoms here. The delivery note does the work: back verandah, side gate, the neighbour.
If the flowers might wait outside, ask for waxy petals. Carnations will take a north-facing step in September. Sweet peas will not.
Order before 2pm and the flowers are at their door today.

Funerals, Venues, and the Run In
The funeral directors we deliver to for Greta services work from Cessnock, Rutherford, Maitland or Singleton, so give us the venue, not the town. A tribute built for a lawn grave will not fit the columbarium wall on Evans Street. And the run in matters here. The main street is up on a ridge and stays dry while the low crossings west of here go under, so the road in can be shut while High Street is not. If that happens we ring you. Order before 2pm and it is there the same day, chapel or house.

My grandmother lived down at Cessnock, and the drive to see her ran along the New England Highway, which is Greta's main street for a kilometre or so. Siobhan and I were on the phones ourselves from 2006 to 2013, and the call that came back most often was someone ringing four hours after a delivery because the recipient had not rung them yet. Almost every time they were at work, or asleep after a night shift. Give it a day, then ring us.
