Fresh Flowers Delivered to Old Bar: Order by 2PM

When somebody passes in a small coastal town, the whole place feels it. The funeral flowers we send into the Manning Valley go to one of the funeral homes in Taree, to the memorial gardens at Pampoolah, or straight to a family home. In our experience the florist running this route knows the funeral directors by name and can time a chapel delivery without being asked twice. For the card, the two we see most are "With love and deepest sympathy" and "Thinking of your family at this difficult time". Short is better than searching for something bigger. Five words will do.

Foam-based is what I would put on a service that has to sit through a chapel and then move to a house afterwards. A hand-tied bunch wants water within a couple of hours and a service can run long. Foam carries its own reservoir, so the arrangement travels twice without anybody having to find a vase in a house where nobody is thinking about vases.

For the build, chrysanthemums do the heavy lifting, because they outlast almost everything else that comes through the cooler. White flowers read correctly in a room where colour would be too much. Roses go in for the focal point if the family wants them, and statice or waxflower fills the gaps without wilting first.

You can't get up the coast every weekend, and the silence between visits has weight. Thinking of you flowers from a distance are one of the most common orders we take for Old Bar. A lot of the people living here sold up in Sydney or the Hunter and moved for the ocean and the quiet, and their kids are still in the city. Some of them are still in their own house. Some have moved into care, and the two need different flowers.

Anna again, on what fits the room. An independent living unit has a dining table and takes a full bunch without anybody having to move anything to make space. A care room is smaller, and a tall arrangement on a bedside locker gets shifted three or four times a day until something goes over. Low and wide, in a container that will not tip, is the one that survives the week. If you know which of the two you are sending to, say so on the order and the florist will build to it.

Fifty years of marriage is not a thing you mark with whatever was on the homepage. You want them landing Saturday morning before the kids and grandkids arrive, which means ordering Friday, because Saturday same-day closes at 10am. Anniversary flowers to Old Bar are common, because couples retire here together and then stay. If it is an address the driver has been to before, the gate, the dog and the front step are known quantities. What the florist does need to know is how exposed the place is, because a deck over the water and a house two streets back are not the same delivery.

Roses are the obvious choice and the riskiest thing you can put on a deck facing the surf. Orchids do fine out there. Alstroemeria does fine. Natives do better than either. A few streets back from the water and roses will last the week, so the florist picks from the delivery address, which is the part you cannot get from a photograph.

Sometimes you have the street, the surname, and no idea what the house is like or what she likes. That is a fair share of what comes through for Old Bar, because half the addresses out here belong to somebody the sender has never visited.

Florist's Choice hands the decision to whoever is on the bench that morning with the truck just unloaded in front of them. You will not know exactly which varieties go in. That is the trade, and on this coast it is usually a good one, because it lets them build from what came through in the best shape. Season, temperature and how the load was handled all change what is worth using on any given morning, and the person looking at it can see that. You cannot.
