The result of the analysis surprised the researcher as those who got the flowers gave a rare 100% response and they responded with a Duchenne smile – genuine, heartfelt smile characterized by voluntary and involuntary contraction of mouth, cheeks, and eyes. Three days after the “experiment,” the flower recipients were still feeling elated compared to their co-participants who did not receive the flower gift.

The researchers tried to understand what it is about flowers that make us happy but they found no solid scientific explanation to give reasons for this phenomenon. It could be the colours of the flowers, the odour, or the symmetrical shape and pattern that people are drawn towards it. At an evolutionary biology perspective, it was because of the coevolutionary relationship of humans and plants – that people cultivate and nurture plants and in turn these plants give us flowers that bring pleasure.
