Flowers to Lloyd, Built This Morning, There by Tonight

Settlement was Thursday, the photo of them holding the key came through Friday, and you are somewhere else looking at it on a phone. This is the occasion Lloyd gets more of than any other, and the one where the address is most likely to be eighteen months younger than the map. Put a mobile on the form, name a shaded spot in the note, and it goes to the house. The new home and congratulations range is the right shelf.

I have done the hospital run myself, back when it was still us doing the deliveries. So I know which part of this you cannot control from where you are sitting, and it is most of it. Timing you can. Order once they have a bed and a ward, because flowers sent to someone already discharged come back to us.

Hospitals are the biggest single employer of people living in Lloyd, which is the inversion worth knowing. The staff go home to this suburb. If it is them you are marking, thank you flowers to a nurses' station land better than anything you can write in a card.

Anna, on what a shared room can take

Nothing scented in a shared room. Roses in a mild or unscented variety are the safe pick because they self pollinate, so nothing goes into the air for the patient in the next bed. A randomised trial of ninety surgical patients found the ones with flowers used fewer painkillers afterwards and ran lower blood pressure. It is not decoration.

Somebody has died and you are trying to get one thing right from a long way off. Sort it first: condolences go to the family home, service flowers go to the funeral director with the date on them.

Then ask about the family's tradition, because the answer changes both. Lloyd is not one thing on this. India, Iraq and Egypt are all inside the top five countries of birth, a Coptic Orthodox congregation that numbered twenty five people in 2003 and around two hundred and ten by 2020 has applied to build a four hundred seat church here, and there is no Hindu temple and no Buddhist temple anywhere in Wagga Wagga. That last one matters more than it looks: it means a Hindu family here arranges privately, so there is less for a sender to work from and asking is the only reliable move. White is the safe default across most traditions and the wrong call at a Hindu funeral, where warm marigold and orange tones tend to be customary. Keep the card short. "Thinking of you and your family" is enough, and nothing that asks for a reply.

Anna, on roses over lilies here

Sympathy roses do the job lilies get credited with, without the pollen. Dry lily pollen marks fabric permanently and it travels: it comes off on a sleeve at the chapel and turns up on somebody's carpet that night. In a room full of people in dark clothes, that is not a risk I would take on someone else's behalf.

Lloyd runs 76.7 per cent labour force participation, two thirds of it full time, 2.1 cars per dwelling, and exactly one bus stop for the whole suburb, at Hudson Drive and Red Hill Road. Fifteen hundred people, one stop. Nobody here catches a bus, which is another way of saying the house is shut and the car gone by eight.

So a birthday here is nearly always a delivery to an empty doorstep. Book it early, name a spot out of the sun, and it is on the kitchen bench when they walk in. Leave it late and it does nine hours on a hot slab first.

Anna: three or four different stem types in one build fade at different rates, so what they look at on day five is not what arrived. That is deliberate, and it is why a mixed build reads better through week two than a single variety in a warm room.
