The service is at 10 on Thursday. You are in Brisbane or Sydney or somewhere further south, and the chapel at 1-3 Railway Avenue is somewhere you have never been. The florists we route orders to in Railway Estate have been to that chapel, and to the family homes on the other side of Ross Creek, more times than they have counted. My name is Andrew. Siobhan and I run Lily's Florist. You order, we match it to a florist close to the area, they build it that morning. That part we handle.
Railway Estate is 2,871 people on a triangle between Ross Creek and the Ross River. The 1916 state school and the Townsville Funerals chapel sit three blocks apart on Railway Avenue. The Cowboys' headquarters is next door. A suburb of under three thousand people holding the central funeral provider for the whole city. The florists we route to here know the chapel run. Ten minutes from the corridor. Done many times over.

Picked for Railway Estate
Anna, qualified florist, took over 10,000 inbound calls from our Pottsville home office. Sending to the chapel at 1-3 Railway Avenue, start with the second or fourth pick; sending to a home address on the renovated cottages around Twelfth Avenue, or toward Stuart Drive where the blocks back onto the Ross River, the first or third cover most of what gets ordered.
Anna: The florist picks from what came in freshest that morning at market: roses, gerberas, statice for cool-spectrum contrast, whatever the bucket held. The latitude is the quality mechanism, not a hedge. It holds up on a wet-season verandah where asking for specific stems in a specific week leaves you with the back of the cool room. The purple statice has a second life too. Hung upside down for a week once the bunch is past, the colour holds for years.
View ProductAnna: This is the bunch that most often routes to the chapel at 1-3 Railway Avenue. Dusty pink roses, white dahlias, stock for vertical colour, lisianthus where it is coming in strong. Assembled the morning of the service, not the night before. By the time the family walks in, the stems are at peak and the arrangement holds through the wake.
View ProductAnna: White-and-green reads as considered across every tradition served in this suburb: Italian-Catholic, Anglican, Torres Strait Islander, Chinese-Australian. The mirrored cube sits straight on a reception desk or a family kitchen bench without needing a vase. One thing the florist does before it goes out: pulls the stamens off the Oriental lilies. Lily pollen stains fabric within the hour, and a white arrangement near a family meal is the worst place for that. One arrangement that works in more rooms than any other in the range.
View ProductAnna: Pink rose sheaves get ordered by daughters. That was the pattern on the phones. We ring the daughter before substituting: if she chose pink roses, she chose the colour for a reason. Twelve matching pink roses, graduated aspidistra and fern foliage, flat-backed for the casket or the family table. After the service the sheaf goes home with the family and the roses finish opening over the next week on the kitchen bench.

Send Flowers to Railway Estate TodayMost people think all sympathy flowers go to the funeral home. They do not. Sympathy orders into Railway Estate split three ways, and getting the routing wrong is the mistake that upsets families more than anything else I saw in fifteen years on the phones.
Service flowers go to Townsville Funerals at 1-3 Railway Avenue, at least thirty minutes before the service starts. A partner florist builds the arrangement that morning and drives it over to the chapel, and the funeral director places it on the catafalque, the family table, or wherever the family has chosen. Condolence flowers go to the family's home address, not the chapel. The family is not at the chapel yet. They are at home with relatives, taking calls, making lists. A condolence arrangement left at an empty chapel the day after the service is a common and avoidable mistake.
For Tombstone Openings and anniversary memorials, particularly for the Torres Strait Islander families connected to St Stephen's Anglican on Twelfth Avenue, the timing depends entirely on what the family has told us they want, and when. The florist asks. The florist does not assume.
On the Italian-Catholic side, memorial cycles at St Francis Xavier's on Ninth Avenue generate repeat orders at 40 days, three months, six months, and a year. We log the arrangement the first time so the caller does not have to rebuild it from scratch at each stage. Red is the colour to watch in a suburb this mixed. Chrysanthemums to a Chinese-Australian family at the Townsville Chinese Club on Boundary Street are expected; red flowers are not. Odd numbers of stems carry. Even numbers are avoided. This is the detail most non-Chinese senders do not know. Chrysanthemums to an Italian-Catholic service are expected too; as a housewarming gift to the same family, never. When the sender does not know the family's specific tradition, the florist defaults to white. Not a cop-out. An informed call.
And then there is the largest group in the suburb by a clear margin. Nearly half of Railway Estate residents report no religious affiliation, which is higher than the Townsville average. A secular celebration of life has no floral rules. The family's aesthetic is the rule. Bright colours, natives, the deceased's favourite flower, a single stem that meant something to them. Some of the most moving arrangements I steered callers toward were celebrations of life where the family wanted sunflowers because he grew them every summer, or waxflower because he bushwalked every weekend.
Partner florists in our network typically work from shops along the Charters Towers Road corridor, two or three kilometres west of Railway Estate. The supply chain is Rocklea via Brisbane, twelve to eighteen hours in the freight cycle. The Charters Towers Road to Railway Avenue leg is ten minutes in normal traffic, longer on Cowboys home-game Saturdays when Graham Murray Place clogs by four in the afternoon. And not just game days. Concerts, JCU events, Thursday patient-volume peaks at the sports medicine practices. A florist with a Railway Estate run plans around any afternoon the Hutchinson Builders Centre is busy.
* Our chalkboard diagram of how an order becomes flowers on a doorstep or a chapel catafalque, the same process since 2009.
The picks above cover what to buy. These next three sections cover how to get it right, because the difference between a condolence arrangement going to a family home and a service arrangement going to the chapel at 1-3 Railway Avenue is not in the flowers. It is in the timing and the address.
Flowers to a funeral will not fix anything. You know that. They say what you cannot say from a row of chairs in another state. The sort to get right first is chapel versus home: service flowers to the chapel thirty minutes before the service starts, condolence flowers to the family's home within three days of the death. The chapel is closed to relatives until service time, so a condolence arrangement delivered there sits in a locked building. For chapel-format wreaths or sheaves, our partner florist builds them the morning of from white lilies, roses, and stock depending on what came in strongest at market.
For a sudden death the caller usually picks the first thing and hopes it is right. For an expected death the caller has thought about it for days. For a long-illness death where the service has already been rescheduled twice, the caller is exhausted and wants someone to decide for them. All three are fine. The one thing I steered every sympathy caller on was the card message. Short. Honest. No attempt to make it better than it is. "Thinking of you and your family" does more work than three sentences of careful explanation. The card outlasts the flowers by years, in drawers and on fridges, so it is worth writing plain.
The birthday is today and you need the flowers there before the lunch or the dinner or the end of school. Same day cutoff is 2pm weekdays, 10am Saturdays. Railway Estate is a 3-bedroom Queenslander suburb with a state school of 790 students and a gentrifier wave of thirty- and forty-somethings renovating the cottages, which means the birthday mix leans two ways. Kids' birthday flowers under $80 to a home on Third or Fourth Avenue. Milestone birthday flowers in the $100 to $150 range to a couple on Twelfth Avenue. The verandah is the standard safe-drop spot: shaded, covered, raised 1.5 to 2 metres on the cottages where owners lifted the floor after the 2019 flood. The stairs are now steeper than they were. The driver knows.
Workplace delivery to the Hutchinson Builders Centre at Graham Murray Place goes to reception, standard drop-off. JCU tenants, Cowboys staff, the sports medicine practices (Apricus Health, Sports Clinic NQ, QLD X-Ray's Stadium Practice) all accept flowers that way. Tulips in Townsville are an eight-week-a-year thing, July and August only. A caller asking for tulips in March is offered lisianthus or ranunculus instead. Most do not mind once it is explained, but nobody wants to be told after the fact that the flowers are not what the photo showed. If it is a milestone and you want the full show, a Deluxe or Premium size on a Florists Choice adds stem count rather than flipping the varieties on you.
Florists Choice Bright Mixed Bunch from $79.95. Delivery $16.95.
Order Before 2pm for Same DayYou heard something. You are not quite sure what the right move is. This is the move. Nine point two percent of Railway Estate identifies as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, roughly three times the national rate. The Indigenous median age here is around 24, younger than the suburb average of 36. Yumplatok (Torres Strait Creole) is the most cited non-English language among those families, reflecting connections to Thursday Island, Palm Island, and the communities further north. A thinking-of-you order from the mainland to Railway Estate, or the other direction, bridges physical distance that does not get bridged by a phone call. Callers in this situation often said the same thing on the phones: they wanted to reach out but did not know what to say. The gesture carries the signal. The card carries the words. "Just wanted you to know I am thinking of you" does the whole job.
A thought on natives for this suburb: banksia, waxflower, and kangaroo paw reach Townsville cool rooms from the Atherton Tablelands faster than roses travelling from Bogota through Rocklea, and they last longer in the tropical heat. For a Torres Strait Islander or Aboriginal family, natives connect to Country in a way that imported stems never will. For a non-Indigenous recipient living through the post-2019 quiet years on a raised Queenslander, natives still hold through a wet-season week without wilting by Wednesday.
None of the three above quite fit. No problem. You do not need a category to send flowers to Railway Estate. Pick any of the four in the picks section above. They cover the widest range of reasons people send flowers to this suburb, and the florist builds from what they can source at market that morning. If you want to talk it through, ring us on 1300 360 469. Same day cutoff is 2pm weekdays and 10am Saturdays, and there is no Sunday delivery.
We drove down Boundary Street every morning that week. Ivy in the back with her uniform on. Siobhan navigating on her phone. On the third morning I properly looked at what we were driving through. A hundred-year-old school, a funeral home, and an NRL stadium within three blocks of each other. Not a normal suburb.
* Siobhan, Ivy and me at the Annandale courts in June 2023. Every morning that week we drove across Railway Estate to get there.

2pm weekdays, 10am Saturdays. No Sunday delivery. After overnight rain events above 100mm, the florist checks conditions before dispatching. Some streets near Stuart Drive and Boundary Street slow down first. Morning runs shift earlier so chapel services still get made. Sunday orders queue for Monday morning.
Flat rate, subsidised. Most network partners in the area are on the Charters Towers Road corridor, two or three kilometres west of Railway Estate. Short last mile. We absorb the difference.
For a service at 10am, flowers need to be on the catafalque by 9:30am. The florist builds that morning, not the day before, so the stems are at peak when the family walks in. For the full chapel format, order white flowers before 2pm the day before and the arrangement is at Townsville Funerals before the family arrives.

Order Flowers to Railway EstateLinda called out the thing most buyers worry about before they know they are worrying about it: the photo on the product page is a suggestion, not a recipe. The florist picks what came in strongest at market that morning. Roses, gerberas, statice for purple contrast, whatever the bucket handed them. The recipient sees colour first. Shape second. Specific stem count comes third, if at all. Linda's arrangement matched in the order recipients actually see it. The latitude is the quality mechanism, not a hedge. The "Florists Choice" label covers the substitution, which is why the 321 reviews on the Bright Mixed Bunch average 4.5 stars instead of 3.8.
Not every order lands like Linda's. A caller on 21 March 2025 (also a verified Feefo review) ordered and felt the bunch was smaller than she paid for. A real complaint, and it happens sometimes across 23,362 reviews. When a florist has a thin Monday at the market, or pulls a Standard when the order was a Deluxe, the difference shows. If the flowers ever look wrong, email us a photo the day they arrive. Andrew rings the florist, we sort it out the same day. Not three days later when the stems are past and there is nothing fixable.
Your order goes through our system the way every order has since 2009. We confirm it on the way in, we match it to a partner florist in or close to Railway Estate (most of those shops work from the Charters Towers Road corridor a few kilometres west), and they build it from what arrived overnight and looked strongest at the market. Chapel orders leave the shop early to hit the 30-minute-before-service window. Home orders run through the same dispatch cycle, aiming for the afternoon.
If the flowers do not look right, email a photo the day they arrive to [email protected]. I ring the florist, I ask what happened, I sort it out that day. Three days later there is nothing fixable: the stems are past, the family has moved on, the chapel has been cleared. Phone 1300 360 469 if you would rather talk.
Andrew handles anything that goes sideways, which he is better at than me. I tend to ring the florist and apologise too much. What I will say is this: our partner florists have done the Railway Estate drive many times over. They know where to park near the chapel, the Twelfth Avenue numbers, the Cowboys game-day traffic around Graham Murray Place. The photo you are waiting for from your person, the one that confirms it arrived, give it a day. People forget. New grandmothers are asleep, hospital patients are on medication, mourners have company. Silence is not rejection. The flowers arrived.
Not much more to say. Order before 2pm today if it needs to be there this afternoon, 10am if it is a Saturday. Ring us if you want to talk it through. Same process since 2009 and it has not needed fixing.
