Nobody home yet? Choose flowers that can wait by the door

On acreage, flowers often sit by the door till somebody gets home, and an arrangement copes with that best. The stems are pushed into wet foam, so they keep drinking the whole time they wait, and nobody has to find a vase. A wrapped bunch is just as lovely once it's in water. Leave it dry too long, though, and a cut stem loses moisture through its petals faster than it can pull it up, and the edges go soft.
Summer days inland tend to run hotter than at the beach, and protea and leucadendron still give you one to two weeks in a warm room. I learned to trust foam and natives at Salt in Kingscliff, building for holiday lets with nobody in them. Top the foam up every couple of days, pouring slowly near the base, and the arrangement goes the distance.
Birthday, Sympathy and Thank-You Flowers, House, Chapel or School
Birthdays are the biggest share of what we send, then sympathy, and in Black Hill plenty of both go to a house at the top of a long driveway. If nobody is likely to be home, our flower arrangements wait best.

In 2007 I drove a birthday bunch from our Kingscliff shop up a gravel drive on Clothiers Creek Road, out past Cudgen. Gate shut, kelpie on duty, nobody home. The flowers went in a bucket of water by the back steps and the dog saw me off. Black Hill has plenty of driveways like it.

Send Sympathy Flowers to the Chapel or the Family Home
Someone has died and the family lives in Black Hill. Service or house? For a service at Newcastle Memorial Park on Anderson Drive, Beresfield, name the North or East Chapel and the start time (for a morning service, order the day before), and choose from our funeral flowers. For the house, send sympathy flowers for home a few days on, when the visitors thin out. "Thinking of you all" is enough on the card. Flowers are a small thing against a death, and plenty of families still keep the cards for years.

Thank-You Flowers for a Teacher at Black Hill Public School

Get well, welcome home, a new job, or just thinking of you: plenty of orders fit none of the cards on this page, and our native flowers suit nearly anyone. Anna agrees.
Natives are what I'd send to someone whose taste I don't know. A natives bunch is mostly protea, leucadendron and waxflower, depending on the season. In a bunch, split the woody stem ends a few centimetres so they can drink, and keep them clear of the fruit bowl: ripening fruit makes waxflower drop every flower at once. Later, the protea and leucadendron dry where they stand and last months on a shelf.

What the notes need
Acreage: the gate and any code, which home, any dogs, where to leave the flowers, and a mobile. Black Hill Public School: the teacher and class. A business on Viney Creek Drive: its name and unit number.
Who takes it
Calvary St Joseph's on Maitland Road, Sandgate: the room number, and in our experience reception takes the flowers and staff carry them through. John Hunter or Maitland Hospital: the ward and bed. A service: the chapel and start time. In before the cutoff, there this afternoon.
Here's What Happens Once You've Ordered
The order goes to one of our partner florists near Black Hill, who makes it up and drives it out, and you get a confirmation email straight away. To change anything, email [email protected] or ring 1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm weekdays and from 10am Saturday, and one of our team will sort it. If anything arrives wrong, email us a photo that day and we take it up with the florist.

People on acreage are busy, at work in town or down the back paddock, so if you haven't heard by dinner, that's normal, and it doesn't mean they didn't love the flowers (I took enough worried calls about exactly that between 2006 and 2011 to know). And if a flower in the picture isn't in stock on the day, we'd rather ask than guess, so we get in touch with you before anything changes.
