Flowers Delivered to Gerroa, No Shop to Leave Them At

You are not at the beach house. Someone you're thinking of is. There is no shop in Gerroa to leave a bunch at, so a driver who finds nobody home has nowhere to fall back to. These go to a house off Crooked River Road, or one of the few streets around it, standing in for you while you are away. Andrew here. Siobhan and I have run flowers into coast towns since 2009, back when we faxed the orders one at a time. Order before 2pm and it is on the afternoon run.

Which Stems Hold in a House That Sits Shut for Days

Anna, qualified florist | trained on the bench in North Carolina, fifteen years blunt about what lasts

Most people send the softest, showiest thing they can find to a beach house. Down here that is the fastest way to have it finished before anyone walks in.

A holiday place sits closed for days at a stretch. No air moving through it, the warmth building up under the roof through the afternoon, nobody near a vase to top up the water. The still, warm air is what quits a soft stem early. A hydrangea will flag inside a day in a shut-up house, and an oriental lily drops rust-coloured pollen that sets into a white linen sofa in a way that does not lift out. I pull the anthers off every lily that goes near a light-coloured room, for exactly that reason.

So I steer coast orders toward stems that do not need babysitting. Chrysanthemums hold two to three weeks and barely register a warm room. Leucadendron is close to indestructible, thick and waxy, and will outlast everything else in the vase. A native bunch, banksia and gum and wax, was built for this stretch of coast, and the woody stems keep their shape long after a soft flower would have dropped. Carnations do not care about the sea air one way or the other. If nobody is walking in until the weekend, you want a flower still tight and holding when they finally open the door. A soft one gives its best to an empty room on the Wednesday and is spent by the time they arrive. Send the tough ones.

Gerroa, before the flowers

The Beach You Are Sending To Was Once a Runway
TASMAN SEA National Park National Park SEVEN MILE BEACH roughly 12 km of firm sand, national park on both sides New Plymouth, NZ 1933
1933 The first commercial flight between Australia and New Zealand took off from this beach, bound for New Plymouth.
0 shops No shop, no cafe, no petrol station in town. The beach and the national park are most of it.

Firm enough to launch a plane across the Tasman once. These days the only thing landing on Crooked River Road is what you send, so we make sure someone is there to take it in.

How a Gerroa Order Actually Gets Down Crooked River Road

There is no warehouse sending these out and no florist sitting in Gerroa itself. The bunch is built that morning by a partner florist in or near Gerroa, working the Kiama to Nowra stretch, and driven in. The order for this coast goes to the florist who covers it as a paid job, not to whoever is cheapest that day. That is the whole point of the network.

What happens to your order once it lands in the Lily's Florist network.

What happens to your order when it hits the Lily's Florist network
1
Order online or by phone before 2pm on a weekday
2
Sent to the partner florist covering the area as a paid order
3
Built that morning from stock off the Sydney market
4
Driven in from Gerringong, the one road into town
5
Handed over at the door, or left in the shade if nobody answers

What People Send to Gerroa, and How to Time It Right

Most orders down here are not for a funeral or a hospital, and both are worth a quick word. As we understand it, Kiama's hospital is a rehabilitation and aged-care unit, not an emergency ward, so anyone in real strife is an hour north at Wollongong, a city we have covered since the network's early days, and get-well flowers to Gerroa itself nearly always go to a home, not a bedside. There is no chapel or funeral home here either, so a service runs up in Gerringong or across at Kiama and condolence flowers go to a private home; sympathy flowers for the home are the right starting point, and a native, colour-led bunch reads truer on this coast than a formal white sheaf. The three below are what come up most.

Something Waiting When They Open the Door

Half the reason to send flowers here is to reach someone you cannot get to yourself, at a house you are not standing in front of. A lot of Gerroa orders are that: a thinking-of-you bunch, or a little hamper on the bench, timed to land when the family actually arrives.

The one thing that changes the order here is timing, not the flowers. The town is fullest over the January holidays and the Easter and Christmas breaks, and emptiest on a plain June midweek, so in our experience the safest run is a Thursday or Friday ahead of a weekend, when someone is there to bring the bunch inside. A short line does the job on the card, something like "thinking of you, see you Saturday."

Send the hardy stems to an arrival, not the delicate ones. If it is going to sit a day or two before anyone walks in, that rules out the soft heads. Natives, chrysanthemums and proteas will still look sharp when the door finally opens. I would not put a soft rose or a hydrangea into a warm, shut house and hope it holds.

For an Anniversary, Build for the Long Weekend, Not the Day

A fair few couples down here have a place they escape to for a milestone, a quiet weekend away from the city, not a party. You are marking the years, and you want it to be there and looking right when they arrive, not fading by Sunday lunch.

The reviews that come back on romance orders are almost always about how long the flowers held, not the first photo. That is the thing to build for. Most people reach for a dozen red roses on an anniversary. Anna would weigh that up.

In a warm coastal room, tight roses can open fast and be past their best in three or four days. If the couple is down for a long weekend, I would go a mixed arrangement with lisianthus and a few natives worked through, or a good anniversary arrangement in a box. Same romance, twice the run.

A Milestone Birthday, Celebrated Down at Gerroa

A lot of the birthdays we send here are for a parent who has retired to the coast, ordered by an adult child back in Sydney or Wollongong who cannot make the drive down for the day. The flowers stand in for you at the table. "Happy 70th Mum, wish we were down there" is plenty on the card.

For a permanent home the address is simple, a house number off Crooked River Road, so a same-day seventieth birthday arrangement is straightforward once it is in before 2pm.

For an older recipient I lean away from anything that needs work. A bunch that has to be cut, fed and arranged is a job, not a gift, when you are on your own. Something built in a vase or a box, low and full, that they can put down and leave, is the kinder send. From what our florists have seen, those are the ones that get a photo back a week later, still going.

Order before 2pm today and it goes out for Gerroa the same afternoon.

When the Order Doesn't Fit a Tidy Occasion

Plenty of orders do not slot into a neat category, and that is fine. You do not need a reason to send flowers to someone at Gerroa, on the same Seven Mile Beach sand Sally Fitzgibbons grew up surfing before she made the world tour.

Anna's pick for Gerroa

If you are letting us choose, I would go a native bunch nearly every time. Half the people who buy here bought for the national park on their doorstep, and a bunch of banksia, wax and gum reads that landscape back to them. It also happens to be the toughest thing on the list, which on this coast is the whole game. Tell us it is for Gerroa and the florist will build to suit the run.

Delivery $16.95

Crooked River Road is the only sealed way in from Gerringong. On a long weekend the Princes Highway approach can add time, so earlier in the day is safer.

Sending to a House That Might Be Empty

This is the one thing worth getting right in Gerroa. More than half the houses here sit empty on a normal weekday, and with no shop or neighbour to fall back on, a driver who finds nobody home has nowhere safe to leave a bunch. If you know roughly when the recipient will be down, tell us, or give us a mobile number so the driver can call ahead. If it is going to the Seven Mile Beach Holiday Park, the site number is the delivery: hundreds of sites, and a bunch addressed to the park alone has nowhere to land, the same as a unit block with no unit number. It is the single most useful thing a sender can do here. Order before 2pm today and it is on the run into Gerroa this afternoon.

After You Order

Once the order is in, it goes straight to the partner florist covering Gerroa as a paid job, gets built that morning, and goes out on the afternoon run in from Gerringong. You do not need to do anything else. If something does not look right when it lands, ring us the same day on 1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm on a weekday or from 10am on a Saturday, or email [email protected], while there is still time in the day to sort it.

One thing we do ask for on holiday-house orders, after a few near-misses over the years: a mobile number for the recipient, or a rough idea of when they are down. A bunch to an empty beach house has nowhere to sit, and a driver who can call ahead saves the whole thing. It is not the website being cautious. It is the one part of a Gerroa delivery we cannot control from here.

A word from Siobhan, the other half of this

The calls I still take most are the worried ones, a day or two after delivery, wondering why they have not heard back from the person they sent to. Nine times out of ten it means nothing (people down at the coast are slow to their phones, which is rather the point of being there). The bunch has already done its work in that room, whether they have got round to telling you or not. Give it a day before you read anything into the quiet. And if you do want to check it landed, ring us, a real person answers, usually one of us between school runs.

The flowers do the reaching for you while you are stuck up the highway. That part works even when the phone stays quiet.

Co-founder, Lily's Florist

I run the delivery side of Lily's Florist with Siobhan. It is 800-plus partner florists now, still just the two of us behind it. I have not stood on Crooked River Road myself, and I am not going to pretend otherwise, but I have watched the order data out of towns like Gerroa for years, and the pattern is clear enough: it is a place that empties midweek and fills on a Friday, and the deliveries that go wrong are almost always the ones sent to a house before anyone is back in it.

So the advice on this page keeps coming back to timing. We started the network in 2009 to give a florist in every town a fair shot at the orders coming out of it, and that is still the job. There is more of that story on our about page.
