What's In The Bunch

Gerberas. All of them. No roses, no lilies, no filler stems pretending to be something else. The photo shows 8-12 blooms in pink, hot pink, red, yellow, cream, and magenta, each one roughly the width of your palm, with green foliage (palm fronds and broad leaves) filling out the base. Every bloom faces forward and outward. That's the thing about gerberas. They're uncomplicated. Big flat faces, bold colour, and no pretence about what they are.

An all gerbera bunch sounds simple, and it is, but that simplicity is the appeal. There's no clashing between different flower types fighting for attention. The colour does all the talking. Joan ordered this and said the flowers "were exactly as they looked online." That matters more with gerberas than most flowers because the colour mix is the entire point. If the colours don't land, the bunch doesn't work.

Christine said hers were "delivered on time and flowers were fresh and beautiful." Ingrid said they were "very much appreciated and beautiful." The word beautiful comes up a lot in gerbera reviews. People don't describe them as elegant or sophisticated. They describe them as beautiful and cheerful and bright. That tells you exactly where this bunch sits and who it's for.

Sizing

Four sizes. Standard starts at $80.75 and gives you a full, colourful bunch. Deluxe adds extra stems for $6 more. Premium at +$31 is the one in the photo, noticeably bigger with more blooms and a wider spread of colour. Extra Large at +$45 is impressive, the kind of bunch that makes someone's jaw drop when they open the door.

Vase is not included. We sell flowers with vases separately. For gerberas, a medium width vase with a narrower neck works well because it keeps the stems upright without letting them splay. Gerbera stems are softer and more flexible than rose stems so they benefit from a bit of structure from the vase itself.

Who Sends This One

Birthdays are the obvious one. Gerberas are celebratory without being romantic and colourful without being over the top. They work for men and women equally, which makes them one of the easier flowers to send when you're not sure what someone likes. They also suit thank you, congratulations, just because, and get well since gerberas have almost no scent, which makes them safe for hospital wards where strong fragrances can be restricted.

Chris and Ridi's review highlights something that doesn't show up in the product photos. "The young lady I spoke to was able to change my request and asked questions and made great suggestions that were welcome." That's the Armidale call centre. Care

Gerberas need slightly different care from most cut flowers. Their stems are hollow, which makes them prone to neck droop if the water is too deep. Fill the vase to about 5 to 8 centimetres rather than two thirds like you would with roses. That sounds counterintuitive but the hollow stems absorb water quickly and can waterlog and soften in deep water. Shallow keeps them firm and upright.

Trim the stems at a forty five degree angle with sharp scissors and strip any foliage that sits below the waterline. Room temperature water, not cold. Change it every two days. Gerberas are thirsty flowers and the water level drops noticeably, so top it up between changes if you see it getting low.

Keep them away from the fruit bowl. Gerberas are one of the most ethylene sensitive cut flowers. Ripening fruit gives off ethylene gas and gerberas respond fast. Even a couple of bananas on the same bench can age the blooms noticeably overnight.

Out of direct afternoon sun too. The bright pigments in gerberas fade faster in UV light than you'd expect. A red gerbera in a west facing window can wash out to a dull orange in two days.

Professional florists reinforce gerbera stems with a fine internal wire that runs up through the hollow centre and into the base of the flower head. It acts like a spine and prevents neck droop. If your gerberas are holding their heads up after three or four days, that's the wire doing its job. It's one of those invisible techniques that separates a florist made bunch from a supermarket one.

Delivery is $16.95 Australia wide. That fee is subsidised. The actual cost of getting a florist to hand deliver to a specific address is often higher, but we absorb the difference.

Substitution Policy

Gerberas are one of the most reliably available cut flowers in Australia, grown commercially year round in most states. Individual colours can be harder to source on any given market day. If the florist can't get a particular shade, they'll substitute with the closest available colour to maintain the bright mixed look. You might get more pink than red on one day, or more yellow than cream on another. The overall effect of a full, colourful, mixed gerbera bunch stays the same. Any stem substituted will be of equal or greater value. If you need a specific colour included or excluded, add a note to your order or call us and we'll make sure the florist knows.
