Sending lilies to a North Lambton family house? One two-minute job keeps the pollen off the kids' clothes

Anna, qualified florist | on lily pollen, school shirts and the bud that opens on day three

Lilies open in turns, which is the catch in a house with small kids. The open flowers usually leave the florist's bench with their anthers pinched out (the anthers are the pollen-covered tips on the six stalks in the middle), and then a closed bud opens around day three, right at school-shirt height on the kitchen table.

Pinching the anthers off with a tissue as each new flower opens is a two-minute job. Miss one and the pollen lands anyway: dry pollen bonds to cotton and wiping grinds it in, so lift it with sticky tape; I learned that on a white work shirt. Stay on top of the pinching and the Pastel Pink Lilies & Roses Arrangement keeps putting out new flowers for a week or more.

North Lambton Flower Delivery for Birthdays, Wards and Services

Birthdays are what most people send flowers for, and North Lambton is young, a median age of 31 at the 2021 Census against 39 for NSW, so a lot of those birthdays will be thirtieths. Stuck? The Australian Natives Bunch has been our bestseller since 2013.

Send Birthday Flowers Where Somebody Will Be

It's their birthday, maybe a 30th, and you can't be the one handing them over. Plenty of houses here are empty between school drop-off and pick-up, so send birthday flowers where they'll be: home if someone's in, work if not (add the business name and level). Put their mobile in the notes either way; in our experience the florist rings it before leaving anything on a sunny step.

A wrapped bunch is happy in its wet pack for a few hours. Then it wants a vase, a fresh cut at about forty-five degrees, and every leaf below the waterline stripped off, because leaves left in the water rot and the rot blocks the stems.

Get Well Flowers, Ward Bed or Couch at Home

You've had a text with a ward number in it, or heard they're home and sore. If they're home, send get well flowers to the house with their mobile in the notes. For Calvary Mater in Waratah or John Hunter on Lookout Road, put their full name and ward; in our experience the ward desk takes the flowers through. If it's a cancer or blood ward, check with the family first, as some can't take flowers. A card can just say "Thinking of you. Here whenever you need me."

On a ward, hospital flowers that bring their own vase save the nurses a hunt.

Anna's call: 3 Gerberas In A Vase. Next to no scent and no pollen to drop, which counts with another bed a metre away, and the glass comes with them.

Funeral Flowers Need a Name and a Start Time

You have the notice, and the service is somewhere you've never been. Send funeral flowers with the funeral director's name, the venue and the start time. The service might be at Dailey Family Funerals on Elder Street, Jesmond Park Uniting Church on Robert Street, or a graveside at Sandgate Cemetery.

I learned why in 2008, driving a white wreath out to the Tweed Valley Lawn Cemetery at Eviron with nothing on the order but the cemetery's name (Asha was one, and with Andrew at the shop, thank goodness). There were two services on that morning. I stood at the wrong one long enough to hear a name I didn't know, then walked the wreath across the lawn, trying very hard not to run, and made the right one with minutes to spare. Sandgate Cemetery is a lot bigger than Eviron.

Flowers won't change what's happened, and the family will still read every card. "With love, thinking of you all" is enough. Sympathy flowers for home can follow when the visitors thin out.

Anna, on what stands up at a graveside

A tall vase tips over on grass. A wreath lies flat, and the Wreath With White & Purple Tones drinks from its own soaked foam ring, so it holds up through a long morning in the open.

Graduations, Thank-Yous and Orders With No Label

Not every order is a birthday, a hospital stay or a funeral. With the University of Newcastle's Callaghan campus next door, send graduation flowers the day before, to wherever the graduate is staying; in our experience the Great Hall ceremony is the one place a delivery can't reach them. And then there's the neighbour who had the kids for an afternoon when everything went sideways, which is exactly what thank-you flowers are for. Anna has a view on all of these.

Go the Bright Bunch & White Wine. Strong colour holds its own in a graduation photo, and the bunch is spiral-tied, meaning the stems cross at one tie point and splay at the base, so it stands up by itself the moment it goes in a vase.

Cutoffs

10am Saturday, because the Saturday run finishes earlier.
After that, pick any day at checkout.
No Sunday delivery, except Mother's Day.

What goes in the notes

A house: their mobile. Calvary Mater (Edith Street, Waratah) or John Hunter (Lookout Road): full name and ward. Anglican Care Jesmond Grove on Mordue Parade: name and room. A service: the funeral director, the venue and the start time.

Who takes them

In our experience ward desks and aged-care receptions sign for flowers and pass them on, and the funeral director's team places them before the family arrives. In before 2pm on a weekday, there this afternoon.

Three Things That Happen After You Click Pay

First comes a confirmation email with your order number (check the junk folder if it hasn't turned up). Then one of our partner florists near North Lambton makes up the flowers and takes them out on the day you chose. Then it usually goes quiet, which is the hard bit (I took the phone orders until 2011, and "did they even get them?" was something I heard all the time). The thank-you tends to come later, once they've found a vase.

To change anything, email [email protected] or ring 1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm weekdays and from 10am Saturday.

Andrew, on the small details that hold an order up

Most deliveries go through without anyone noticing. The ones that stall are missing something small: a ward, a unit letter, a mobile that turns out to be the sender's own. The florist rings, it gets sorted, the flowers go. If anything arrives wrong, send us a photo the same day and we fix it. Siobhan and I delivered most of our own orders until 2009. Same stalls then.

The ward, the room or their mobile, in the notes. That's most of it, really.

Andrew and I bought a flower and gift shop on Marine Parade, Kingscliff, in 2006, and I took the phone orders until February 2011.

In 2007 and 2008 Newcastle's suburbs, North Lambton included, were among the ten busiest areas we sent orders to, passed on to florists down there. Passing orders on like that became Lily's Florist in 2009, which now runs through more than eight hundred partner florists. The longer story is on about Lily's Florist.
