Easter Delivery: What You Need to Know
Easter runs across a four day long weekend and the single most important thing to know is that we do not deliver on Sundays. Flower markets close Saturday afternoon. Any florist delivering on a Sunday would be using Friday stock, which has already lost roughly 30% of its vase life before it reaches a vase. We would rather be upfront about that than deliver something that fades by Tuesday. If you want flowers waiting on the table for Easter Sunday lunch, order them for Saturday delivery.

Within three or four days that water is stagnant and bacteria start building up. The bacteria get into the stem base and rot it from the inside. The arrangement looks fine on top but the stems are dying where you cannot see. Grab a turkey baster or even a sports drink bottle. Draw out the old water from the foam, tip it out, then add fresh. Do it every two or three days. That is all it takes. The stems stay clean and the arrangement keeps going."

Over a week. Anna reckons that is about right for a boxed arrangement when the foam gets looked after. Anna calls this the number one preventable cause of early flower death. Fifteen years of watching beautiful arrangements die ahead of schedule, and it nearly always came back to the same thing.

"Leaves that sit underwater decompose. The decomposing matter feeds bacteria and those bacteria multiply fast. They physically clog the stem's ability to take up water. Once that happens the flower cannot drink and the petals start dropping. I have watched expensive bouquets die in four days because nobody pulled off the bottom leaves before putting them in the vase. Check every stem. Anything below the waterline gets stripped. It takes thirty seconds and it buys you three or four extra days of life."
If you are sending flowers as a host gift over the break, mention this to the person receiving them. The florist will have stripped the leaves before delivery, but if the recipient retrimms the stems and puts them in a new vase, fresh leaves might end up submerged. A quick check takes half a minute and extends the flowers well past the Monday.

The actual cost of having a local florist hand deliver to a specific address is often higher, but we absorb the difference.
Same day cutoffs are 2pm on weekdays and 10am on Saturdays. Those cutoffs exist because flowers arriving at the shop from the market at 6am need two to four hours of conditioning in clean water before they can be arranged. Rushing that step means stems go out partially dehydrated and the customer sees it a few days later when everything wilts early. The cutoff gives the florist enough time to do it properly.
