Will Flowers Delivered in Ninderry Stay Fresh in Humid Weather? Yes, Out of the Cellophane
Yes, they hold up well, as long as they come out of the wrap. Humid air on its own keeps petals full of water; the risk is grey mould. Ninderry's name comes from a Kabi word for a place of scrub leeches, and the mould wants the same air leeches do: warm, wet and still. Botrytis, as florists call it, has spores on every flower, and they wake once it's over about twenty degrees and near ninety per cent humidity, like the air after a summer storm. Roses zipped in cellophane in that grow fuzzy grey patches on the petals, sometimes overnight.
I found that out with a sleeve of garden roses left sealed in a back room, my first August in North Carolina. Unwrap them, stand them where a breeze reaches, and don't mist them. Natives and gerberas barely notice the damp.
Birthday, get well and funeral flowers can all be delivered in Ninderry the same day, to the house, a hospital ward or the funeral director. If you're stuck, our native flowers are the ones people send most.
You might only know the house from photos: a few acres back off the road, the number on a post at the gate. Our birthday flowers, the Birthday Package Special included, can reach Ninderry the same day. Use the notes to say whether a car gets up the drive, and where to leave them if nobody's home.
About those leeches. In 2008 I took a birthday bunch from our Marine Parade shop to a house off Long Road on Tamborine Mountain, just after a run of storms. The car wasn't going up that track, so I walked it, in shop sandals (mistake number one). She loved the lilies. Neither of us loved the leech on my ankle.
If it might wait on a verandah, send the Australian Natives Bunch. Protea and leucadendron have leathery heads that hold their water, and damp air doesn't bother them.
Someone's in hospital, or home again and sick of the ceiling. For a ward, put the hospital, the ward and their full name in the notes; in our experience the flowers go to the ward desk and the staff take them in (Andrew and I carried plenty into John Flynn and Tweed Hospital in the shop years). Our get well flowers go to the house just as easily, and there's more on sending flowers to hospital if you need it. A card that works: "Rest up. The garden can wait."
Anna's call: the Blue Mist Arrangement arrives standing in its own water, so nobody on the ward hunts for a vase. If it's in foam, top it up every couple of days; a sports bottle does it without a mess.
There's a funeral on, and you want flowers there from you. Funeral flowers go to the funeral director with the name and the service time, so they're in place before anyone arrives; for a graveside at Yandina Cemetery on Cordwell Road, say so when you order. Sympathy flowers for the house can follow once the visitors thin out. It's the least you can do and the most you can do from where you are, both at once. A card that works: "Thinking of you all, with love."
A sheath is a long spray with the stems bound and hidden, and a wreath is built on a ring of wet foam. Both are made to lie flat and look right from above, which is why the Wreath With White & Purple Tones suits a casket or the grass. For the house, go a vase arrangement like the Gorgeous White Arrangement. A grieving house doesn't go looking for scissors.
Plenty of orders fit no heading: a new job, thanks for minding the dog, a friend having a rotten month (that last one is what our thinking of you flowers are for).
Anna's pick: the Rose, Gerbera & Lilies Bunch. Three kinds of flower means it suits nearly anyone, and all three hold up in humid weather once they're out of the wrap.
Or start from one of these
Still before the cutoff on a weekday? Their flowers can go out this afternoon.
Shop GerberasWeekdays by 2pm, so there's time to make it and get it out that afternoon.
Saturday by 10am, because Saturday runs finish earlier.
No Sunday delivery, except Mother's Day.
The road number and a word about the drive: the gate, which house, whether a car gets up it. A mobile for whoever's receiving.
In our experience the florist knocks first, and if nobody's in, leaves them where the notes say, out of the sun. Order before 2pm on a weekday and they go out today.
Once it's paid for, the waiting is the hard bit, because quite often you hear nothing. People who are unwell, or grieving, or out in the garden till dark don't always ring, and the thank-you usually comes right after you've stopped checking.
To change something, email [email protected] or ring 1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm weekdays, and one of our team will sort it.
On the day, one of our partner florists near Ninderry builds it, reads the notes and loads it with the run. Gate locked and no instructions? They ring the mobile you gave, then you. If something arrives wrong, send us a photo that day and we fix it. The one that catches people out is substitution: a stem that wasn't at market that morning gets swapped for the closest match in colour and style.
After that it's just them and the flowers.
