Flowers to South Hobart for Someone on Your Mind

Someone in South Hobart is on your mind and you have been putting this off. I know because I have done the same thing, sat on the thought for days, told myself I would get around to it. I'm Siobhan, and Andrew and I have run Lily's Florist since 2009. The gap between wanting to send flowers and actually doing it is where most people get stuck (I have been there, truly). This page exists to close that gap before 2pm today.

Three kilometres from the CBD, against the lower slopes of kunanyi/Mount Wellington, South Hobart has been here since 1821. Cascade Brewery has been brewing on Cascade Road since 1824, and the florist delivering to South Hobart drives past it on most runs. The Cascades Female Factory carried over 7,000 women through its stone walls before being inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2010. A florist in or close to South Hobart understands the mix of heritage cottages and weatherboard homes on Regent Street, and that a bouquet left on the doorstep here in winter faces zero heat damage.

Four Products That Suit South Hobart

Anna, qualified florist, 15 years hands-on and 10,000 inbound calls processed from right across Australia. South Hobart's mild temperatures and moderate summers mean flowers that struggle in Brisbane or Cairns perform at their peak here. These four cover birthdays, sympathy, thank you, and everything in between.

Anna: Proteas and leucadendrons are built for cooler climates. In a South Hobart living room at 16 degrees they can push three weeks. The chocolates make this a complete gift without needing a second order.

Floriade Bunch

Anna: Gerberas in the Floriade give you four to five days in warm cities. In South Hobart's temperate conditions they hold seven, easily. The chrysanthemums anchoring the base go for a fortnight.

Anna: The florist picks from what came in strongest that morning. In Hobart, the mild transit from the wholesaler means the stems arriving at the shop tend to be in better condition than those freighted to warmer capitals. Nearly 300 verified reviews on this one.

Anna: The lavender roses in this bunch hold their colour better in moderate light. In summer heat they pink out within 48 hours. In a South Hobart room with indirect light, the purple stays true for a week.

Why Cool Climate Delivery Changes What You Can Send

Anna, Qualified Florist

Most people ordering flowers to South Hobart do not realise how different the supply chain is from the rest of Australia. Tasmania has no Flemington, no Epping, no Rocklea. The bulk of wholesale stock freights from Melbourne on the Spirit of Tasmania, overnight across Bass Strait, then by refrigerated road from Devonport to Hobart. That crossing adds a full day to the supply chain compared to a Melbourne florist pulling the same stem off the shelf at Epping. The freight penalty is real. Every stem costs more to get here. But the cool Tasmanian climate works in the florist's favour once those flowers reach the shop. They condition faster, the bacterial growth that kills vase life in warmer cities slows right down, and the end result is a bouquet that arrives to a South Hobart doorstep with more life left in it than the same bunch delivered to a Sydney address in February.

I took enough calls from interstate senders to know the assumption: "Hobart is small, the range must be limited." The range is not limited. The Hobart wholesaler carries the same roses, lilies, gerberas, and chrysanthemums that every mainland florist stocks. The difference is what happens after they leave the cool room. A rose that gives a Melbourne customer seven days gives a South Hobart customer ten. Hydrangeas, tulips, ranunculus, stems I would have flagged with a warning for a Brisbane delivery, I can recommend for South Hobart without qualification. The climate is doing the work.

How Flower Delivery to South Hobart Works

There is no warehouse and no airport box. Your flowers are made by a florist in or close to South Hobart from whatever came in freshest that morning, in a cool room, by hand. The distance between the bench and the front door is measured in suburbs, not states.

This is the chalkboard in our Kingscliff shop. It shows how an order moves from our system to a partner florist near the delivery suburb.

What to Send to South Hobart

The four products above cover the occasions South Hobart residents order for most often. This section goes deeper on two: one you might be navigating right now (sympathy), and one that catches people off guard. If you need birthday flowers, the product grid and Browse Pills above have you covered.

Sending sympathy flowers when you are not sure about the service

You have heard the news and you want to do something. That instinct is enough. You do not need to know the funeral details, the family's preferences, or the right colour palette before you order. The first decision is where to send: the family's home address or the funeral director. If you know the home address, send there. If a service is planned but you are not sure of the details, sympathy flowers to the home arrive on your timeline, not the funeral director's. Send within three days. Keep the card to one line. For a traditional service: "Thinking of you and your family." For a celebration of life: "They would have loved the colour." Short. Honest.

Anna on sympathy in South Hobart

Nearly half of Greater Hobart identifies as having no religion, which shifts how sympathy flowers work here. Celebration-of-life services are common and the colour palette opens up. White is still appropriate, but a family choosing a celebration of life may prefer colour. I processed calls from senders who agonised over this. The simplest approach is to let the florist read the brief: if you write "sympathy" on the order, they will default to whites and soft pastels. If you write "celebration of life," they can bring in warmer tones. The florist in or near South Hobart knows which way Hobart leans. Trust the brief.

A thank you that arrives without warning

The favour was last week. Or last month. The thank you has been sitting in your head and you keep telling yourself you will get around to it. Flowers that arrive unannounced hit differently from a text. No RSVP, no obligation, just something at the door. A bunch of thank you flowers does not need to be grand. The gesture is the weight. The card matters more than the flowers. "Thanks for last Tuesday" tells someone you remembered the specific thing, not just the general obligation.

Anna, qualified florist, on getting the timing right: Mid-morning is the window. Most South Hobart deliveries go to freestanding houses on residential streets, and most people are home or have a sheltered porch. From the calls I processed, Hobart had one of the lowest "nobody home" callback rates of any city we covered. In the cooler months, a bunch left on the doorstep is fine for hours. The frost risk is minimal compared to elevated suburbs like Fern Tree or Ridgeway. If nobody is home, our florist close to the area will leave flowers in a safe spot with a delivery note. They know the suburb.

Not sure what to send?

Pick any of the four products above. They were chosen because they cover the widest range of reasons people send flowers to South Hobart. If none of them feel right, a Florist's Choice bunch hands the decision to the partner florist near South Hobart. They pick from whatever came in freshest and build around your occasion note. The arrangement will look different on day five than day one. Gerberas fade first, chrysanthemums hold for a fortnight, and the bunch changes shape as each stem has its day. That is not a quality problem. That is how flowers work. In Hobart's mild conditions, every variety they choose will last longer than the national average. Not marketing. Temperature.

We visited Hobart in June 2024, the four of us, and the cold hit harder than we expected (which was silly, given we live in Kingscliff). Andrew spent half the trip checking his Tesla range and the other half dragging the kids to MONA. I came up from underground blinking into the winter light and thought: this is a city that takes you seriously.

How to Order Flowers to South Hobart

Phone

1300 360 469
7am to 6pm weekdays
10am Saturdays
Or order online any time.

Same Day Cutoff

2pm weekdays, 10am Saturdays. No Sunday delivery. South Hobart is compact and close to the CBD, so orders placed before cutoff tend to reach the florist quickly. Sunday orders queue for Monday morning.

Delivery $16.95

Flat rate, subsidised. The actual cost of a florist driving from their shop to a South Hobart address and back is higher than $16.95. We absorb the difference.

Cool mornings, mixed parking, heritage streets

South Hobart is residential, mostly freestanding houses. Parking on Regent Street and the side streets is mixed but rarely a problem for a florist with a van. Winter mornings can be cold enough to form light frost in exposed spots, but South Hobart is lower-lying than Fern Tree or Mount Nelson, and the morning sun clears the chill by mid-morning. The moderate air temperature is good news for your flowers. Order an arrangement before 2pm and it is there this afternoon.

"What a pleasant surprise to get free chocolates with the flowers. My sister love the bunch of native flowers as she is sensitive to a lot of other flowers. Thank you again!"

Natasha · verified customer · Native Arrangement With Chocolates

Send Native Flowers

Natasha ordered native flowers specifically because her sister reacts to other varieties. A purchase decision driven by knowledge, not guesswork. Her sister told her she loved them. That response is the whole point of sending flowers. The buyer never sees the arrangement. They see the thank you text.

Anna on natives and sensitivity

Native stems tend to produce less pollen and less fragrance than European varieties like lilies and stock. Proteas, banksias, and leucadendrons are structurally tough, low-allergen, and they do not shed the way a lily does once the stamens open. For recipients who are sensitive, natives are not a compromise. They are a better match. The chocolates in Natasha's order turned a practical choice into a proper gift. That combination works because the arrangement carries the longevity and the chocolates carry the indulgence.

After You Order

Your order hits our system and goes straight to a partner florist in or close to South Hobart. If there is anything unusual about the address, a gate code, a side entrance, a note about leaving flowers with a neighbour, add it to the delivery instructions. The florist reads every word. If the address is a business on Regent Street or Cascade Road, include the business name. If it is a house on one of the residential side streets, the street number is enough.

If something goes wrong, or if you just want to check on the order, call 1300 360 469 between 7am and 6pm weekdays. You can also email [email protected] for changes to the card message, address, or delivery date.

Andrew, co-founder, on what happens behind the scenes

Andrew here. When an order goes to South Hobart I check the partner florist has confirmed it. If confirmation takes longer than I expect (and it does sometimes, because Bass Strait is a thing and freight delays happen), I ring the florist directly. Not an email, not a message. A phone call. The delivery fee does not cover the cost of a florist driving across South Hobart, making the arrangement, and delivering it to the door. We subsidise the gap because we would rather the florist focused on the flowers than on whether the margin makes sense. If you are reading this and thinking about calling to check, go ahead. We are at 1300 360 469.

Flowers to South Hobart tend to reach the door mid-morning to early afternoon. The compact suburb and proximity to the CBD means delivery windows are tighter than outer suburbs like Brighton or Sorell. Most recipients text the sender a photo within the hour. When they do not, people ring us. In fifteen years the answer has always been the same: they got them, they were busy, the photo comes later.

Co-founder, Lily's Florist

Andrew and I visited Hobart in June 2024 with Asha and Ivy. We walked the waterfront, spent a day underground at MONA, and drove through suburbs we had only ever seen as delivery postcodes. South Hobart was one of them. The Cascade Brewery sitting at the base of the mountain, the stone walls of the Female Factory, the mix of old cottages and newer builds on the side streets. It felt like a city that had been living its own life for 200 years without caring if anyone else noticed.

We started Lily's Florist in 2009 from Kingscliff on the far north coast of NSW. One partner florist was brave enough to say yes. Today the network has over 800 florists across every state and territory, including the partner florists who deliver to South Hobart and the suburbs around it. The full story of how we got from one florist to 800 is on our About Us page.
