In a town where most people over seventy have stayed on in their own homes rather than moving into care, sympathy flowers here usually go to a house, not a funeral home. Someone has lost a parent, a neighbour, a husband they shared forty years of breakfasts with.

There is no funeral director in Bermagui itself, so services run through Bega or Pambula, twenty minutes to nearly an hour away, and the burial is often at the lawn cemetery on Bleakley Street. If you are not sure whether flowers should go to the family home or the service, send them to the home. In our experience the house is where people gather in the days afterward, and a bunch on the kitchen table gets seen by everyone who calls in.

The most fitting tribute in a town like this is usually the most personal one. When someone in Bermagui ends up in hospital, they are almost never in Bermagui. There is no hospital in town, and that catches a lot of senders out.

The nearest is South East Regional Hospital on Virginia Drive in Bega, about twenty-four kilometres inland, and that is where a get well order for an admitted patient needs to go. Give us the full patient name, and the ward if you have it. From what our florists find, flowers to a regional hospital go to the ward reception desk and the staff walk them through to the bed, so the name on the card matters more than the room number. One tip that saves grief: order once they are settled on a ward, not while they are still in emergency or coming out of surgery, or the flowers turn up before there is a room to take them to and sit at the desk.

I know that scramble from the inside. Bermagui's median age is fifty-eight, twenty years above the national figure, which means the birthdays that matter most here are the big round ones. A seventieth, an eightieth, sometimes a ninetieth for someone who has watched the town change from the same front verandah.

These almost always go to a freestanding house with a driveway and a porch, so there is no buzzer, no lobby, no code to chase. If nobody is home, there is usually a safe spot out of the sun by the door, which is one worry you can cross straight off.

For a milestone like that I would not send the tight, trendy bunch you would hand a thirty-year-old. Someone turning eighty has seen a lot of flowers and knows exactly what they like, usually something generous and classic. Give them a full arrangement with room to breathe, roses that will run ten to fourteen days in that cool coastal air, and colour they can pick out from the armchair across the room. Plenty of orders do not fit sympathy, hospital, or a milestone. A daughter in Canberra who just wants her mum to know she is thinking of her.
