The Deal About Sending Happy Birthday Flowers

Birthday flowers right? They're a bit of a no brainer, really that is what we think anyway. There's something about fresh flowers that just works, they tend to light up a room, level up an office (this is our most popular delivery location for birthday flowers) lift spirits, and let someone know you're thinking of them. It doesn't matter if it's for your mum, your best mate, your grandma, or that colleague who always makes your morning coffee run bearable.

Here's the thing about flowers, at least in our opinion after 19 years selling them, they've been doing their job brilliantly for centuries. No software updates needed, no batteries required. Just pure, natural joy delivered straight to someone's door. And in a time where we're all buried in our phones, there's something refreshingly real about a bouquet of fresh flowers sitting on the kitchen table.

Plan Ahead (Trust Us on This One)

Okay, so we've all been there. It's 11:47 PM, you're scrolling through your phone, and suddenly it hits you, far out, it's Sarah's birthday is tomorrow. Panic sets in, OMG. The good news for you is? We've got same day delivery if you order before 2 PM. The better news for you? You don't have to be that person scrambling at the last minute, the 'bad books' are not a fun place to be let me tell you.

I'll never forget this one afternoon in our Kingscliff shop - it was about 3:45 PM, just after school pick up, on a scorching February day, actually if you know Northern NSW splash in a large amount of humidity also. This bloke rushes in, completely flustered, sweat dripping down his face, us too as we had no A/C in the shop! "It's my wife's birthday," he pants, "and I've just remembered. She finishes work at 4:30 in the Credit Union down the road." We had exactly three bunches left in the shop, and one was looking a bit worse for wear after a day in the heat. We managed to cobble together something decent from what we had (not sure how TBH if you know our story), but the look of sheer relief mixed with "I'm never doing this again" on his face? Priceless. He became one of our regulars after that for the time we were in the shop, always ordering a week in advance which we had a chuckle at that.

Here's what we've learned after 19+ years in this business: ordering happy birthday flowers in advance isn't just about being organised (though your future self will thank you). It's about having options. When birthdays clash with Valentine's Day, Christmas, or Mother's Day, florists get absolutely slammed. We're talking phones ringing-off-the-hook, everyone running around like headless chooks kind of busy, well that would be an understatement.

By ordering flowers ahead, you're not only securing a delivery slot but you are also making sure your loved one gets exactly what you want them to have, not whatever's left after the morning rush.

Make It Mean Something

Remember that old saying "it's the thought that counts"? Well, turns out our grandmothers were onto something. But here's the kicker, putting thought into your flower choice doesn't mean you need to write a thesis on floral symbolism.

One of my favourite memories from the shop was this elderly gentleman who came in every year for his wife's birthday. He'd always ask for "those orange things that look like little suns", he meant gerberas, but could never remember the name. After the third year, we just started calling them "Arthur's orange things." with a laugh. When he told us she'd kept every single birthday bouquet card he'd written her over their 47 years of marriage, stored in a shoebox under their bed, we might have gotten a bit misty eyed behind the counter.

Start simple. Does she go weak at the knees for sunflowers? Is he oddly obsessed with native Australian flowers? (We've seen stranger things.) Maybe she mentioned once, just once, three years ago, that gerberas remind her of her childhood garden. These little details? They're gold.

If you're drawing a complete blank on their favourite flowers, no stress. Think colours instead. Is their entire wardrobe black? Maybe some striking white lilies. Do they paint their world in pastels? Soft pink roses might be the go for them.

And here's a thought that's worked for countless customers over the years, try and think about moments, not just flowers. The roses from your first anniversary. The mixed bouquet on the restaurant table during that epic first date. Even the daisies in that park where you both got caught in the rain and couldn't stop laughing.

Set the Right Tone

Birthdays aren't meant for subtle, especially the big ones like 30, 40, and 50. They're meant for "Holy hell, look at those flowers!" type moments we love. We're talking about arrangements that make people stop mid sentence when they walk into the room and think or say whoa as our daughter likes to say recently for some reason.

Think big, bold sunflowers that look like they're smiling. Roses in every colour of the rainbow (yes, that's a thing). Bright orange snapdragons that look like tiny dragons having a party. Deep purple irises that seem almost too perfect to be real. Check out our range of orange flowers for inspiration.

But, and this pretty is important, "celebratory" doesn't always mean "in your face". Some of our most stunning birthday arrangements are soft, dreamy pastels that whisper rather than shout. It's all about the person receiving them. Know your audience, as they say, and it's true.

Don't Forget the Words

From the 1000's of calls we have taken, we know from or experience, where people often freeze up. The flowers are sorted, the delivery's scheduled, and then... the card message box stares back at you, cursor blinking accusingly. Writing a card for a birthday sometimes just ain't easy.

Deep breath, stop, think, and our best advice is to reflect, even peruse old photos for inspiration in your phone. You've got 250 characters (we know, we know right, Twitter (X) prepared us all for this). The secret? Don't overthink it. Write like you're talking to them over coffee, a casual and honest tone, and pretty please, don't ever use Ai to help you with your birthday card!

Maybe it's that inside joke from last Christmas. Perhaps it's simply "Another year older, still can't beat me at Mario Kart." Could be "Remember when we said we'd be sensible adults by now? Thank God that didn't happen."

The best messages you can send with your flowers? They're the ones that sound like you. Not Hallmark, not Shakespeare, just you, celebrating someone who matters. And if you're still stuck, our team has helped write thousands of these things. Give us a bell on 1800 466 534, we've heard it all and we don't judge.

Let's Do This

After all these years of sending birthday flowers across Australia, from tiny towns we'd never heard of to like Uranquinty near Wagga Wagga, to the biggest cities like Sydney, here's what we know for sure. Birthday flowers work. They cut through the digital noise, they last longer than a text message, and they have this uncanny ability to make someone's day genuinely better.

So go on, make someone's birthday properly special.
