The hospital is not in Lakes Entrance. Anyone admitted from town is forty kilometres west at Bairnsdale, so a get well order addressed to the town has nowhere to land, and the same question runs through everything else going out. A funeral order wants the service date and the director handling it. For aged care it is the resident's full name and the facility, for a caravan park the booking name, and for a house up at Kalimna a mobile number, because a quarter of the beds in this town are empty on a given night. Get the destination into the notes and the rest is timing. Before 2pm on a weekday it goes that afternoon. Sunday nothing moves, because the market shuts Saturday and Friday stock will not hold that long.
2pm weekdays, 10am Saturday. Somebody still has to build it and drive it.
No acute hospital in Lakes Entrance. Anyone admitted is 40 km west at Bairnsdale. Wait for a general ward before you send.
About a quarter of dwellings sit empty on a given night, double the state rate. A mobile on the order fixes it.
No shop of ours on the Esplanade. Your order lands with a florist in or near Lakes Entrance who buys their own stock and has the stems that day.
Mild days, warm nights, and no cold hour for the flowers to catch up.
People assume a beach town is kinder to flowers than an inland one, and on the hot days it is, because Lakes Entrance barely sees the mid thirties. What it misses is the cold night. The January low averages 15.2 degrees four metres above the water, where inland Victoria at the same latitude drops to nine or ten. That drop is the difference. I had it off a shop floor before I could explain it: same bunch, same week, beach addresses tired first.
Respiration slows in the dark, it does not stop, and a warm night keeps the sugars burning. Soft heads go first, hydrangea worst. Sweet pea and freesia fail differently, in a shut-up holiday house with no air moving. For summer I take chrysanthemum, or leucadendron, technically foliage with coloured bracts and good a fortnight past everything around it. Carnation lasts longest per dollar, with one condition: keep the vase off the kitchen bench, because ripening bananas will curl a carnation inside a day.
Stock comes up from Melbourne Market at Epping, and three places break the cold chain: the market floor, the van, the doorstep. In most towns the doorstep is a footnote. In Lakes Entrance a quarter of the doors are shut, so it is the whole story. Sunday is the same argument: the market closes Saturday, and Friday stock held to Monday is not something I would put on anyone's bench.
The five destinations a Lakes Entrance order actually runs to, including the one that is not in town.
You will not be standing at whichever of these it turns out to be. The notes field stands in for you.
Nearly one in ten people here is widowed, double the state rate, which is why the first of these three comes up more than anything else. Three doors, three different jobs, and a boxed arrangement covers most of it.
Where service flowers actually go
Flowers do not fix this and you already know it. What they do is stand in the room you cannot get to. Condolences head to the house in the first few days. Flowers for the service go to the funeral director, with the service date and who they are for. Send those to the family's street and they land after everyone is inside. No fixing that tomorrow. I carried tributes into funeral homes around the Tweed and the southern Gold Coast for four years, and every director took them at the back door, never the front. Asha on my hip got me through more of those doors than my name did. Where a family has a connection to the Lake Tyers community we ask first, because every community handles it differently.
A tall standing tribute is wrong for an ashes wall. A lawn grave, a monumental plot and a memorial wall each take a different shape of tribute, and the cemetery on Palmers Road runs more than one. Ask the family which section. Small, weighted and front facing covers you when nobody is sure. If the card is the part you are stuck on, thinking of you and your family has never once been wrong.
Four hours from Melbourne, and the visits thin out
Four hours each way is a day gone, and the day is not always there. She is fine, and that is the awkward part, because nothing has happened and it has still been a while. Three aged care and retirement addresses in a town of five thousand, all taking flowers at reception. Give us the resident and the facility, and staff carry it through from there. Thinking of you beats get well when nothing is wrong, and the birthday that keeps coming up is an eightieth.
A box for a room, every time. No vase to find, no water for staff to change, nothing to go over when the door swings. Keep the scent down: in a shared room one resident's oriental lilies belong to everybody. On a dementia wing ask for familiar and non-toxic, because residents do sometimes taste the flowers or drink the water. Roses, daisies, lavender.
Address a hospital order to Bairnsdale
Ordering into a hospital you have never walked into is its own kind of helpless. The base hospital for the shire is forty kilometres west, so a get well order addressed to Lakes Entrance has nowhere to land. Patient and ward on the order. I did those runs myself out of the Kingscliff shop, 2006 to 2010. Murwillumbah Hospital, thirty-seven degrees, Asha screaming in the back and nowhere to park, and the flowers still went to reception for a clerk to log. Someone on staff walks them the last hundred metres, and it worked that way at every ward I ever carried into. If discharge is close, send it to the house.
Wait until they reach a general ward. Intensive care, high dependency, oncology and haematology tend not to take flowers, and one sent early sits at reception with nobody able to place it. Palliative is the exception, and the staff there know why. On a general ward, skip lilies and heavy scent and send it boxed, because a ward has no spare vase.
Just a bunch that has to arrive today.
See What Can Go Out This AfternoonStill deciding?
None of those three fits. Fair enough.
Go natives. Protea, banksia, leucadendron. The waxy cuticle barely registers a warm coastal night and they hold shape on a doorstep longer than anything in the bucket. Expect a protea to drink hard, and its leaves to darken as the head pulls sugar out of them. Normal.
Let the Florist ChooseNo. Gippsland Lakes Complete Health on Jemmeson Street is a community health centre. General practice, allied health, no inpatient beds. Anyone admitted goes to Bairnsdale, and the order wants a ward on it.
No. The market shuts Saturday, so Sunday stock would be Friday stock on its third day, and those two days come off the vase life at the other end. It bites twice a year: Mother's Day and Father's Day both land on a Sunday, which makes Saturday 10am the real deadline for both.
Yes, and it is a different job from a bouquet. A commemorative wreath is built flat on a backing so it can sit or lean at a service. It gets placed, and nobody hands it over. The Lakes Entrance RSL sub-branch on the Esplanade makes 25 April a real date. Give us a few days on it.
"We had a shop for four years. Everything I know about where flowers actually end up, I learned carrying them in."
* The original Kingscliff shop, bought in 2006. The brand and the network came three years later.

Troy rang about an order that missed its window. Nothing lost, nothing damaged. It arrived, and it arrived after the thing it was for. A birthday survives that. A funeral does not, and the run order matters more here than in a capital, because there is one road in and through January the Esplanade carries the whole lakes system.
The cause was the sheet. His delivery sat behind stops that could have waited an hour. We refunded and re-sent, which does not undo the timing. Then we changed the rule: time-sensitive occasions go first on the run now, ahead of everything, closest stop or not. It costs the driver kilometres, and it is the right way round.
Order by 2pm weekdays. Saturday it is 10am, because the market has shut and the bench is a half day.
Kalimna, Lake Tyers Beach, Nungurner and Swan Reach ride the same run.
Delivery is a flat fee and a run out here costs us more. We carry the difference, because a fee set at the real kilometres would stop people sending.
To a caravan park, motel or holiday unit it goes to the office, under the booking name and site number, because the surname on the door is often somebody else. One mismatch there stalls more orders than the summer traffic ever has. A fair few of these come from someone already in town who cannot get across to the park office themselves. Order before 2pm today and it is at their door this afternoon.
An order number lands in your inbox straight away, and the job reaches a florist in or near Lakes Entrance with your card message on it. If something looks wrong, send a photo within 24 hours, one of what arrived and one of the page you ordered from. Phone, email or live chat. It usually settles in one call.
A woman rang from Melbourne in 2012 about her mother's eightieth. Street right, house wrong. Her mum had moved up the hill two years before and nobody had told the address book. We got a mobile off her. The florist rang from the driveway. The address was the reason she gave for calling. The reason she rang was that she could not check for herself, and a phone number has been the first thing I ask for on an East Gippsland order ever since.
The photo usually turns up within the hour. When it does not, that is almost never a sign anything went wrong. Older recipients put the flowers in water and think about the phone later. Give it a day, or ring 1300 360 469 and we will check for you, Saturdays until ten, which is also the cutoff. The flowers have already done their work in that room, whether she has managed to tell you yet or not. The card outlasts them by months, which is the part nobody expects.
