I have mixed feelings about Raymond Terrace, always on the way to Fraser Island, from Taree, in the 80s and Byron Bay later on as an 'adult'. On the one hand I was so excited to go on holidays but on the approach the tension always raised. All the talk in the car was the potential of crazy traffic going through town in the holidays, sometimes it could add hours to the trip. Dad would start getting edgy around Hexham, Mum would be checking the clock, and us kids in the back would be asking "are we there yet?" for the hundredth time, just like Bart and Lisa.
Those trips taught me something though. Patience. And funny enough, that patience came in handy years later when we were building our flower delivery network across NSW. Raymond Terrace was one of those towns that kept popping up in our phone calls, and unlike those holiday traffic jams, we found a way to make deliveries there smooth and reliable.
Back in 2008, sitting in our little Kingscliff florist shop with baby Asha crawling around between the flower buckets and boxes of organic skin care, we started noticing a pattern. We'd get these calls, usually on a Thursday or Friday, from people from our area wanting to send flowers to Raymond Terrace. "It's me mum's birthday" they'd say, or "me dad's in the nursing home there." At first we were turning them away, just like we did with Murwillumbah and Taree orders, but after the twentieth call that quarter (yes, in full nerd style, we kept records), we looked at each other and thought, there's got to be something we can do here, surely, there must be.
The Hunter region was interesting for flowers. You had all these Newcastle peeps with family in Raymond Terrace, plus the wine country crowd from Pokolbin sending thank you bouquets to suppliers and businesses along the Pacific Highway. We needed someone who understood both sides of that equation.
That was 2009. These days, Raymond Terrace orders come through daily. From maybe 5 orders a month back then to now being one of our regular Hunter Valley delivery spots. The florist there knows every street, every retirement village, and exactly which suburbs are technically Raymond Terrace versus Heatherbrae or Medowie. That local knowledge matters more than you'd think.

When you order flowers for Raymond Terrace before 2PM Monday to Friday, here's what goes on behind the scenes. Your order pops up on our system and gets routed straight to our Raymond Terrace partner florist or one close by. Not some warehouse in Sydney, not a production line, but an actual flower shop with real florists who live in the area.
They'll handcraft your flower arrangement that morning using fresh flowers, many from the Hunter Valley growers just up the road. The delivery driver they use knows Raymond Terrace like the back of their hand. They know that Lakeside Drive can be tricky to navigate with all the new developments, they know exactly where the RAAF Base Williamtown entrance is for those military family deliveries, and they definitely know to avoid Adelaide Street during school pickup time.
If our main Raymond Terrace florist has run out of red roses for your order, no drama. The system automatically checks with our backup partners in the area. Maybe the Thornton florist has plenty, or our Maitland partner can help out. Your flowers still get delivered fresh and on time, just like we promised. This backup system saved us more than once, especially during Hunter Valley wedding season when everyone wants white roses and baby's breath.
We recently got awarded a Feefo Trusted Service Award, and honestly, putting ourselves out there for independent reviews was scarier than that first day we opened the shop in Kingscliff. Flowers are so subjective. What one person loves, another might think is a bit much. But we went for it anyway.
To get this award, you need at least 50 four-star reviews in a year. We got 3,025 reviews, with 2,406 being four or five stars. That's over 60 times the minimum! Our customers sending flowers to Raymond Terrace were part of that success. They took the time to leave feedback about their orders, telling us what worked and what didn't.
Our partner florists in or close to Raymond Terrace know things that matter. They know that Grahamstown Road businesses prefer deliveries before 10AM. They know the three main retirement villages and which entrance to use at each one. They understand that RAAF families often need same-day sympathy arrangements at short notice when tragic news comes through.
During Hunter Valley wedding season, they're prepared for the spillover orders. Couples getting married at wineries often have family staying in Raymond Terrace where accommodation is cheaper. That means lots of corsages, boutonnieres, and thank you arrangements. Our florist there stocks up accordingly.
They also know the seasonal thing. Spring racing carnival at Newcastle means more celebration flowers. June long weekend means lots of birthday orders from Sydney families visiting relatives. December is huge for corporate thank you arrangements to all those transport and logistics companies along the highway.
Funny how things come full circle. All those years ago I dreaded getting stuck in Raymond Terrace traffic. Now we deliver beauty through the town every single day.
This whole Raymond Terrace operation, like everything else at Lily's Florist, was decided at our dinner table, probably while helping Ivy with her homework or discussing Asha's netball schedule. No boardroom meetings, no complex strategies. Just us thinking about how to help people in Newcastle and Sydney send flowers to their loved ones in Raymond Terrace without the hassle.
Want to send flowers to Raymond Terrace? Order before 2PM weekdays for same-day delivery, or plan ahead for the weekend. Your flowers will be made by a real local florist who knows the difference between East Raymond Terrace and West, and definitely knows to avoid William Street during the afternoon rush.
