Sending gerberas into a Newcastle summer, and keeping their heads up

Gerberas are about the brightest thing you can send in summer, and they need one bit of looking after. The stem is hollow. Florists call it a scape, and it's a drinking straw holding up a heavy head. On a hot afternoon the big flat petals lose water faster than the straw can pull it up, and the head folds at the neck. After I watched a whole bucket do it on the bench at Salt, I wired every stem I used.
Kept cool and out of the sun, they give you five to seven days; in a hot summer room, three to five. If a neck does bend, recut two centimetres off the stem and stand it in shallow warm water for an hour.
Birthdays, Wards and Chapels Around Adamstown

The notice says Brunker Road, Thursday, eleven o'clock, and a morning service means ordering the day before. The chapel at Simplicity Funerals, 200 Brunker Road, seats about seventy. For a service there, or a requiem at St Columba's Church on Lockyer Street, sympathy flowers go to the venue with the start time in the notes; something for the family's house can follow a few days later. A sheath won't change the day for them, and they will still notice who sent one. On the card, "Thinking of you all" is enough.

Send Get Well Flowers With a Ward Number and a Plan B
Someone is in Lingard Private Hospital on Merewether Street after surgery, and you heard about it by text. In our experience hospital flowers go to the front desk, so their full name and ward go in the notes, and if they might be home tomorrow, send the flowers to the house instead. Back when Andrew and I had our little shop in Kingscliff, I learned reception deliveries the hard way at Murwillumbah Hospital in 2007: our newborn daughter Asha screaming in the back, thirty-seven degrees, nowhere to park, oh the anxiety. For the card: "Rest up. The garden can wait."
For a ward, go with the 3 Gerberas In A Vase. No scent to bother the next bed, hardly any pollen, and the vase comes with them. Change the water every second day, because a hollow stem clogs fast.
If It Doesn't Fit a Category, Go Native

What the notes need
A teacher at St Pius X High or Adamstown Public: their full name and "school office". A shop on Brunker Road: the business name. A unit: the number and a mobile for the buzzer.
Who receives it
Usually the person, a neighbour or a front desk. In our experience a same-day order can land any time up to late afternoon, so for a morning service, order the day before; the Adamstown gates at Glebe Road can add ten minutes or more to a run that has to cross them. In before 2pm and your order goes out on today's run.
Between the Order and the Knock at the Door
A confirmation email arrives straight away, and one of our partner florists near Adamstown makes up the flowers on the day you've chosen. People in hospital, or eighty and tired, rarely pick up the phone the same day.

If something arrives wrong, email us a photo the same day and we take it up with the florist while it can still be fixed. When a stem in the picture isn't at the market that morning, the florist swaps within the same colour and value and records the swap on your order. Lilies in the photo, roses at the door, usually means that.
