Sending birthday flowers around Beaumont Street? Check for chrysanthemums first
A disbud chrysanthemum, one big bloom to a stem with the side buds pinched out, is about the toughest flower in the cool room. It goes two weeks and more in an ordinary lounge room, and the leaves yellow before the bloom gives up. For most birthdays that's a hard-working, good-looking choice.
In a lot of Italian families the chrysanthemum is the cemetery flower, the one that goes to the graves on 2 November, All Souls' Day. It's one of those things you learn early on the bench. If the person you're sending to grew up in one of those families, ask for no chrysanthemums, which matters most on a florist's choice bunch where the florist picks the stems, and let roses, or lilies in pink, say happy birthday. At a funeral, the same stem is exactly right.
Birthdays are the biggest reason people send flowers through our network, and sympathy flowers come next. Hamilton became the centre of Newcastle's Italian community after the Lettesi arrived from Abruzzo in 1947, and in those families the choice of stem matters at both. Then there's aged care, on Lindsay Street, which needs its own kind of order.
It's her eightieth, the house will be full of family by lunch, and you're the one who can't get there. Send 80th birthday flowers to the house that morning, with a mobile in the notes, and "no chrysanthemums" if she's from one of the Italian families. If she's out, the driver can ring the mobile.
I learnt about chrysanthemums on a doorstep off Kennedy Drive in Tweed Heads West in 2007. An eightieth in an Italian family, and I turned up with a big yellow bunch of them, because that was what the cool room had. The birthday girl took one look and crossed herself. Siobhan explained it to me in the van.
Roses and pink lilies read as a birthday in an Italian house; white lilies belong at a funeral. The Pastel Pink Lilies & Roses Arrangement has the right two. It comes boxed, so nobody goes hunting for a vase with the cousins in the kitchen.
The notice says Sacred Heart Cathedral, Hunter Street, ten o'clock, and you can't be there. Send a wreath or a sheath for the service, or flowers to the family's home after it. For a morning service, order the day before with the funeral director and start time in the notes; in our experience the director has the flowers in place before the family arrives. "Thinking of you all, with love" is enough on the card. You won't be in the pew. Your name will be up the front, on the card.
Anna's call: white. It's the safe colour across nearly every tradition, and white lilies are the classic for an Italian service, so I'd go the White Lily & Rose Sheath, which lies flat on the casket. A funeral is also where chrysanthemums belong.
Mum's at Uniting Lindsay Gardens now, and the weeks between visits are long. Thinking of you flowers don't need a reason. Put her full name and room number in the notes; from what we've seen, reception takes the flowers and the staff carry them through. "Thinking of you. See you Sunday." says plenty.
Aged-care rooms are kept warm, and warm air ages any flower faster, so something small that carries its own water beats a big loose bunch. The bedside table is usually taken anyway, with the reading glasses and the photo frames. A boxed flower arrangement is its own vase. The Blush Pinks Arrangement With Chocolates is a low, compact dome that sits on a chest of drawers out of the sun; top up its foam every couple of days, or the foam dries from the top down and the highest blooms wilt first.
Plenty of orders fit no heading: the neighbour who fed the cat for a month, a cousin just moved into a terrace off Tudor Street. The Australian Natives Bunch has been our bestseller for more than a decade, and Anna has a view on why native flowers suit those orders.
Banksia and leucadendron carry no awkward meaning at a birthday or a funeral, and they last. Leucadendron, the leafy one with the cone in the middle, goes a fortnight and more in a vase, and the banksia dries where it stands and sits on the sideboard for months.

I took the calls myself from 2006 to February 2011, and the worried one always came the next morning (usually before I'd had a coffee). Did they get there? Mum hasn't rung. She nearly always had them, and had already shown them to everyone who came through the house, the neighbour, the cousins, the lady from church, before she thought to pick up the phone. People ring when they're ready, the older ones especially, and sometimes that's a week later. Now and then a flower in the website photo is out of season, and people have said in reviews that we emailed before swapping it. That's how it should go.
Most flowers last a week or two. The card ends up in the drawer with the others.
