I'm Siobhan. Andrew and I have run Lily's Florist since 2009 from our base in Kingscliff, northern NSW. Townsville was one of the first places people kept asking us to deliver to, and our first partner here goes back to 2008. We now work with over 800 florists across Australia. You can read the full story on our About Us page.

Fifteen years picking stems that survive the drive to the door Qualified florist, 15+ years on the bench

Townsville heat changes the rules. Down south, a standard rose arrangement in good condition will last five to seven days in a vase. In Aitkenvale during the dry season, that same rose can start dropping petals inside three days if the house has aircon running hard. Airconditioning pulls moisture from everything in the room, including the water in those stems. They dehydrate faster than you would expect in a room that feels cool.

I took a call from a woman in Darwin once who wanted to send a thank you arrangement to her old manager at a business on Ross River Road. She wanted classic roses, long stems, the full thing. I asked whether the office had aircon. Of course it did. I suggested we go with a mix of orchids and anthuriums instead, both waxy stems that hold moisture far better in dry indoor air. She was sceptical but trusted us. The manager kept those flowers on her desk for close to two weeks. The woman rang back a month later to send another one.

For Aitkenvale specifically, I would push tropical stems or hardy natives over soft petalled varieties almost every time. Chrysanthemums also hold up well. Florists in this area source from Rocklea Markets in Brisbane overnight but the good ones also buy orchids, gingers, and anthuriums from NQ growers. A heliconia picked that morning in Townsville will outlast a rose that spent fourteen hours in a freight truck from Brisbane.

You place your order online, by phone, or through live chat. We match it to a partner florist covering the Aitkenvale area who has the stock, the skills, and the knowledge to get it right. They source stems early, condition them properly, cut on the diagonal, strip leaves below the waterline, build the arrangement, and drive it to the door. A florist who works this area knows that Ross River Road traffic peaks between seven and nine in the morning, and again around half past three when the schools empty. They plan their delivery route around it.

What to Send to Aitkenvale

Aitkenvale is Townsville's commercial heart. The Shopping Centre, The Intersection, Ignatius Park College, businesses lining Ross River Road and Nathan Street. It is also close to Townsville University Hospital and the Mater Private in neighbouring Hyde Park. Flower orders here cover corporate thank yous heading to offices, sympathy arrangements for families, birthday surprises timed around school pick up, and get well deliveries to both hospitals.

Sending a thank you to a colleague?

Corporate flowers work best when they arrive during business hours and go straight to a reception desk. Our Bright Arrangement With Chocolates comes in a vase with a box of chocolates, which saves the recipient from hunting for a vase in the office kitchen and gives them something to share around. For a simpler option, a Stunning Pinks Bunch or any of our thank you range works well. Order before 2pm and it arrives today.

Anna, qualified florist: For any office in Aitkenvale that runs aircon all day, I would go chrysanthemums and anthuriums over standard roses. The waxy surface on an anthurium barely loses moisture in dry air. Roses open fast, drop petals on a desk, and somebody ends up cleaning up after your gift. Chrysanths last ten days minimum in those conditions without any fuss. If you want colour, a couple of Singapore orchid stems add pink or purple without the fragrance problem. Open plan offices and strong scent do not mix.
Sympathy flowers for a family in Aitkenvale?

Timing matters more with sympathy than any other occasion. Families often need flowers delivered to a home, to a church, or to Morleys Funeral Home on Martinez Avenue in West End, which serves much of the Aitkenvale area. For a home delivery, the Gorgeous Whites Bunch is a safe, elegant choice. For a chapel service, a White Funeral Wreath or a funeral sheath can be delivered directly and our partner florist will coordinate the timing with the chapel. If the funeral is tomorrow, call us on 1300 360 469 now and we will get it sorted today.

Go low and rounded for sympathy. Anything that towers draws the eye and you do not want that when someone has just died. White disbuds, spray roses, and ruscus foliage sit well together without one stem taking over. If the flowers are going to a home rather than a chapel, skip the lilies. Pollen drops onto fabric and leaves brown stains that do not come out. The scent builds in a small room too, and when a family is already exhausted the last thing they need is a headache from fragrance. Stick with unscented whites and soft greens.
Birthday flowers to brighten their day?

Birthdays in Aitkenvale usually mean a delivery to a house, a workplace on the commercial strip, or sometimes to one of the schools for a teacher. Colour is your friend here. During the dry season in Townsville the tropical options are stunning. Orchids, frangipanis, bold gingers. They last longer in the heat and look like nothing you would get from a generic online florist shipping from Sydney. Our Starburst Bunch is a favourite for birthdays, or try the Birthday Package Special if you want flowers, chocolates, and a balloon in one delivery. Order before 2pm and it arrives today.

If nobody is home during the day, make sure the order notes include a safe spot to leave them. A shaded porch, a side gate, a neighbour. Twenty minutes in direct Townsville sun during the dry season and a bouquet is finished. The florist will try to find shade, but if there is nowhere obvious, the flowers end up on a concrete step in 35 degrees and the petals cook from the outside in. I always told callers to think about where their mail gets left and whether that spot gets afternoon sun.
Get well flowers for someone in hospital?

Townsville University Hospital on Angus Smith Drive is the only tertiary hospital in northern Australia. Patients come from as far as Mount Isa and Cape York, which means get well flowers are often ordered by family hundreds of kilometres away who cannot visit. Our Blissful Botanics Bunch is a good hospital choice because it avoids lilies entirely. For something with a vase already included, the 3 Gerberas In A Vase is cheerful, low maintenance, and fits on a bedside table. Check ward visiting hours before ordering, and note that ICU and maternity have stricter rules on flowers.

Hospitals ban lilies for a reason. The pollen stains everything it touches, the fragrance triggers nausea in patients already on medication, and most wards in Townsville have signs at the door saying no lilies. I had callers ask for lilies to a hospital at least twice a week during my time on the phones. Every single time I talked them out of it. Go gerberas, go chrysanths, go a potted orchid if you want something that lasts beyond the hospital stay. A potted phalaenopsis will still be flowering on their kitchen bench a month after they get home.
Not sure what to send?

Our Florist's Choice from $71.95 is a set arrangement style the florist builds to match the occasion you describe. If you would rather give them full creative freedom with whatever is freshest, the Deal of the Day from $73.95 lets them work with the best stock on the bench. They know what arrived that day, what is holding up in the current conditions, and what will look right. Both are popular with people ordering from interstate who cannot see the stock. If budget is tight, we have a single wrapped red rose for when you want to send something meaningful without the full arrangement, and our flowers under $60 range still arrives hand delivered by a real florist.

How to Order Flowers to Aitkenvale

Phone: 1300 360 469. We also take orders online and through live chat. If you want to talk through a sympathy order or need advice on what to send to someone in Townsville University Hospital, a phone call is usually easiest.

Same day cutoff: 2pm weekdays, 10am Saturdays. The cutoff exists because the florist needs time to source the right stems, cut them on the diagonal, strip foliage below the waterline, hydrate in conditioned water, build the arrangement, and drive it out. Rush that process and the flowers lose days of vase life.

No Sunday delivery. Most florists buy stock from Rocklea Markets in Brisbane, which closes Sunday. A Sunday delivery would mean using Friday stems, already two days into their lifespan before the recipient even gets them. Monday flowers are made from Monday market stock. Picked hours ago, not days.

Delivery fee: $16.95. That is subsidised. The actual cost of a single delivery run across a commercial suburb like Aitkenvale, factoring in fuel and peak hour traffic, often exceeds that.

If you are reading this before 2pm on a weekday, your flowers can arrive in Aitkenvale today. Order the Deal of the Day or call us now on 1300 360 469.

What Our Customers Say

Every review on our site is collected by Feefo, an independent platform endorsed by Google. We cannot edit or delete them. Over 23,251 verified customers have left feedback. Here are two from customers who used our Townsville delivery.

"I ordered around 11am and the delivery was received at around 2:30pm in Townsville."

Three and a half hours from order to doorstep in a city that sprawls from Bushland Beach to Wulguru. That turnaround only works when the florist is already in the area with stock conditioned and ready to go.

"My [family member] sent me pictures of the flowers, she lives in Townsville, and I live on the Gold Coast. The flowers were absolutely beautiful. Money well spent and I would definitely use this service again."

Gold Coast to Townsville is roughly 1,300 kilometres. The sender never saw the flowers in person. The photos were the only proof, and they were enough. Our partner florists in the Townsville area know their reputation depends on what shows up in those photos. You can read more reviews on our reviews page.

About the Author

Siobhan and Andrew, founders of Lily's Florist, with their daughters Asha and Ivy on a family trip
Siobhan
Co-founder, Lily's Florist

Andrew and I bought a tiny flower shop in Kingscliff in 2006. A Yellow Pages mix up accidentally started sending us orders from everywhere, and by 2009 we had turned that accident into Lily's Florist, a network that now covers over 800 partner florists across Australia. Our first Townsville partner was Peg at Silver Wattle Florist. Andrew still talks about how nervous he was on that call. Peg understood what we were trying to do within thirty seconds. No pitch required.

We know Townsville a little ourselves. Two years ago we were up for Ivy's State Age netball with HDNA and completely underestimated the peak hour traffic. Ross River Road was packed, Thuringowa Drive was a car park at half past seven, and we nearly missed the first quarter. Ivy won the state title and has never let us forget that morning. That trip reminded me why we rely on florists who actually live in the area. They know the roads, the timing, and the suburbs in a way we never could from 1,300 kilometres away.
