What decides how long a bunch lasts in Allenstown is the room it lands in. Every ten degrees warmer roughly doubles how fast a cut flower breathes and ages, and this close to the Tropic of Capricorn a lounge room in January can sit at thirty. In that room the petals loosen and drop in about half the time they would in a mild one.
I learned that at Salt in Kingscliff, watching the buckets give out faster every summer. For a house you know runs hot, the Australian Native Arrangement, or anything built around chrysanthemums, barely notices. Roses and lilies do beautifully with the air conditioning on, or in a corner out of the afternoon sun.

Cathedral Funerals Run to the Minute
Some sympathy orders into Allenstown are for a requiem at St Joseph's Cathedral on William Street. Put the service time from the funeral notice, and the funeral director's name, in the notes. In 2007 I pulled up at St Anthony's in Kingscliff with a wreath as the hearse left, because the order said Thursday and gave no time. I still look for the time first.

Leucadendron and protea are woody and built for warm air, and in my experience leucadendron can go a fortnight in a hot room. Split the stem bases a couple of centimetres so they can drink. If the bunch has banksia in it, the cone dries on a shelf for months afterwards.

St Joseph's Cathedral: the service time and funeral director, Tucker & Nankivell on Alma Street for example. Rockhampton Hospital or the Mater: ward and bed. Bethany on Ward Street or Bethesda on Talford Street: the resident's room. A house: a phone number.
Who receives it
In our experience the funeral director's staff, a ward nurse or aged-care reception take it in and pass it on. A house gets a knock. Order before 2pm on a weekday and it goes out this afternoon.

People in hospital, or a family in the week of a funeral, often don't ring to say the flowers came, and I took enough calls from worried senders between 2006 and 2011 to know the quiet usually just means the person is tired. Flowers won't make that week any easier, and people still keep the card. And if you hear the patient has been moved to another room, tell us, because that's the one thing that still catches us out now and then.
