You are not in Alton Downs. Most people ordering flowers out here are not. They are in Brisbane, or Mackay, or somewhere further. I am Andrew Thomson, and Siobhan and I have run Lily's Florist since 2009. The distance is a fact, not a problem. A florist in or near Rockhampton handles the run for Alton Downs, and the run is what you are paying for.
Alton Downs is acreage. Long driveways and gravel. Gates that need codes or a phone call ahead. Homesteads set back far enough from the road that the house number lives on the mailbox, not the verandah. Every order is its own trip from the florist's bench, and we absorb the cost difference. What that buys you is a delivery that gets planned for, not squeezed onto a suburban round.

Why Alton Downs orders need a different stem selection from a city order
People order tulips for a 60th out here and assume the price tag means the stems will travel. A caller from Mackay rang one January asking for tulips to go to a place on Ridgelands Road. I talked her out of it. Tulips collapse at 28 degrees. At 32 with Central Queensland humidity they fold before the florist finishes tying the ribbon. Flower respiration roughly doubles for every 10-degree rise in room temperature, which means what reads as premium stock in a Melbourne corner store reads as a stress test in an Alton Downs kitchen. I steered her toward chrysanthemums and natives. Sounds like a downgrade until you see a disbud chrysanthemum fully open. The size of a fist. Bold colour. Two weeks in the vase.
Nineteen kilometres north-west of Rockhampton CBD, past the point of comfortable for a regular suburban round. No mains water in Alton Downs. Residents run dams and bores, which became an ongoing local concern at a 2020 community meeting with the Mirani MP. For a florist building an order to a homestead out here, that changes the stem selection. Hydrangeas drink more than a bore supply will keep up with. Chrysanthemums and natives tolerate a missed refill without folding. The Alton Downs homes are large, the dining tables are wide, and a small bunch looks lost on them.
The Rocklea wholesale market floor in Brisbane opens at 4:30am on Mondays and Thursdays. Stock that leaves on a Monday morning sits in a Rockhampton cool room by mid-afternoon, ready for the Tuesday run up the Bruce Highway and out to Alton Downs. That is the closest thing this corridor has to overnight wholesale. The other factor is shade. Most homesteads have verandahs, but the driver still has to get flowers from the van to the door without them baking on a gate post. In summer that is a three-minute window. Most weekends through winter the sunflower farm down the road draws ten thousand cars, and the florist is already on those roads when the visitors arrive.
No warehouse sits between your order and the florist's bench. The stems come from Brisbane Markets the day before, the florist arranges them that morning, and one van drives them to the door. Three hands. End of chain.
* What happens to your order inside the Lily's Florist network
The products above sort the what. This section covers the how. Sending flowers to a rural address raises questions that do not come up on a suburban round closer to Rockhampton, and the thinking of you category accounts for a large share of Alton Downs orders.
A death in a rural community moves quickly through word of mouth. The family is probably at the Alton Downs homestead, not in town. If the funeral is through one of Rockhampton's funeral directors, the flowers go directly to them with the service date and the family name on the card. Tucker and Nankivell are at 166 Alma Street on the south side of the river, established 1863. Harts Family Funerals work out of 247 Ford Street in Berserker on the north side. Most regional services run on a Friday or a Saturday, so the florist watches the 10am Saturday cutoff for these and pushes the order forward when the family confirms a time. If you are sending condolences to the home in Alton Downs, use the property address on Ridgelands Road or whichever road applies. Keep the card short. One sentence is enough. "Thinking of your family" says what needs saying without overreaching.
Whites and creams are the traditional sympathy choice, and they still land that way in regional Queensland. Sympathy flowers in whites read as composed without being sombre. If the order is going to a homestead rather than a chapel, lean on tough natives like leucadendron, kangaroo paw, or waxflower. Leucadendron holds for two weeks at warm bench temperatures and shrugs off humidity. Avoid protea on a homestead order. It is a heavy drinker, and on a property running bore water that becomes a problem inside three days. For a family hosting visitors at the Alton Downs homestead, the Gorgeous Whites Bunch arrives in its own glass vase, which saves them finding a container on a day they should not have to.
On a working property, people are out. Fences to check, cattle to move, errands in town. The delivery driver is not going to find someone standing at the front door at 11am on a Tuesday. If you know the recipient will be out, add a delivery note when you order. "Leave on the verandah near the front door" or "try the side gate" gives the driver a safe-place option. On an acreage block, the verandah is usually the best spot because it is covered. If there are dogs, mention that too.
A birthday order placed at 1:45pm for a place 20 kilometres out is technically same day, but realistically that order is going on the afternoon run and arriving late in the day. The window matters more on a rural Alton Downs address than a suburban one. If the recipient is likely to be home in the morning, placing the order the night before gives the florist room to build it that morning and send it on the first run out. Birthday flowers that arrive mid-morning land better than birthday flowers that arrive at 5pm when the person has already assumed nothing was coming.
A lot of Alton Downs orders come from people in other states. Parents whose kids moved to the block. Children whose parents retired out there. The distance makes the gesture heavier to carry because you cannot just drop in. You are relying on someone else to put the flowers in their hands, and you will not see their face when it happens.
I walked callers through this one every time. The ones sending just because flowers to rural addresses spent the longest on the line. They wanted to know the flowers would get there. The florist confirms the delivery. We can see the order status. If there is a problem at the gate or the place is hard to find, the florist calls us and we call you. The card message matters here. "Thinking of you from [city]" is simple and it works. It tells the person where you are and that you went to the effort across the distance.
Order in the morning if you can. The first Alton Downs run leaves the cool room before the heat sets in.
Browse Flower BunchesSome orders do not fit sympathy, birthday, or thinking of you neatly. Maybe it is a new house out on a property. A thank you for a neighbour who pulled cattle off the road last weekend. A just-because that does not need a category.
For most of these I pointed callers at the Rose, Gerbera and Lilies Bunch. Three stem types stagger their vase life so the recipient gets something new opening for over a week, and the vase arrives with the order. If the occasion is sombre, the Gorgeous Whites Bunch does the same job in a different register. Both sit in the bestsellers at the top of this page. Pick either one and the florist takes it from there.

2pm weekdays, 10am Saturdays. No Sunday delivery. Alton Downs runs as its own delivery, separate from the suburban round, so earlier orders give the florist more flexibility on timing. Sunday orders queue for Monday morning.
Flat rate, subsidised. The real cost of a one-address run out to a homestead twenty kilometres or more from the florist is higher than $16.95. We absorb the difference.
If the place has a locked gate, a long driveway, or dogs that will greet the delivery driver before the owner does, mention it in the delivery notes. The florist can call ahead to arrange access. No covered porch? Let us know and the driver will not leave flowers exposed. Order before 2pm today and your flowers are there this afternoon.

Send the Same BunchGarrie ordered the Rose, Gerbera and Lilies Bunch. It matched, it arrived, his wife was happy. The florist near Rockhampton delivered on that. But I want to be upfront. This product has 243 reviews at 4.5 stars. Not every order lands perfectly. Sue, another verified customer, paid for the largest upsize of the same bunch and received carnations instead of gerberas. The arrangement felt smaller than what she expected from the photo. She chose this product specifically for its longevity, knowing the lilies and gerberas would keep going long after the roses faded. Carnations changed the timeline and the intent.
What likely happened: gerberas were not available from the Brisbane Markets freight that week, and the florist substituted. Substitution is part of how floristry works when you are 636 kilometres from the wholesale market. But the gap between what Sue expected and what arrived is real. If that concerns you, call 1300 360 469 before you order and ask whether gerberas are in stock that day. We can check with the florist. The Rose, Gerbera and Lilies Bunch works when all three stems arrive. When substitution changes the balance, the product loses the staggered vase life that makes it worth choosing.
Your Alton Downs order goes to a partner florist in or close to the area. They pull fresh stock that morning, build the arrangement on the bench, and load the delivery as its own run. You will receive an order confirmation by email. If anything changes on the delivery side, we hear about it.
If the flowers arrive and something is not right, call 1300 360 469 or email [email protected]. We deal with the florist directly. You do not chase them.
I read every complaint that comes through. Most of the time it is a stock issue and we go back to the florist (some weeks the gerberas just are not there, regardless of what the website says). Sometimes the standard size does not look how the photo suggested. That is a different fix, on us to be honest about. We built this business from a single shop in Kingscliff, and the thing that kept people coming back was never pretending a problem had not happened.
If the person you sent the flowers to has not called you back yet, that is normal. Most people do not call right away. The flowers do the talking until the call comes.
The florist closest to Alton Downs makes a dedicated trip for your order. The run takes time, fuel, and proper care. Most of the time it goes well. When it does not, the phone number above is the fastest path to a resolution. Saturday orders need to be in by 10am. There is no afternoon Saturday run out this far.
