Expanding Into Brisbane Hills - The Bardon Story

By 2009 we'd proven the model could work in regional areas, but Brisbane was different. Bigger city, more florists, more competition. We were still pretty green, still making it up as we went, but we knew if we wanted to cover Queensland properly we needed to be in Brisbane suburbs like Bardon, not just the CBD.

I remember driving up the hill into Bardon for the first time (we had considered moving to Brisbane for a while), probably 2010, scoping out the area. Those leafy streets, the old Queenslanders mixed with renovations, elevated Brisbane feel. It's one of those suburbs where you can tell people actually live there, proper homes, established families. Very different from the transient feel of some areas.

Finding florists willing to work with us in Brisbane suburbs was challenging. We weren't established, we had no brand recognition in Queensland, just this odd model where we'd send them orders and they'd add more flowers to cover commission.

We started Lily's Florist in 2009 from Northern NSW, expanded into Queensland early on because we kept getting calls for people wanting to send flowers to Brisbane and its surrounding suburbs. Bardon was part of that first wave of Brisbane suburbs, along with Ashgrove, Paddington, the inner-west network. Now we've got over 800 partner florists across Australia but the values haven't changed.

Our customer service team is in Armidale NSW, they're all Australian, we answer the phone 6 days a week. The kids are 18 and 14 now (Asha and Ivy, where did that time go?). Business decisions still get made at the dinner table, not in a boardroom.
