Flowers Delivery Bulli: Same Day

Andrew's mate Dave studied computer science and engineering at the University of Wollongong in the mid 90s. Andrew was down there constantly. Crashing on Dave's floor, eating two minute noodles at midnight, doing whatever uni mates do when one is studying and the other is just there for the weekend. The quickest way from Sydney was the freeway, but Andrew always took the coastal road through Bulli on the way down because he liked it. That narrow strip of suburb between the escarpment and the ocean, the Norfolk pines near the beach, the houses climbing up towards the Tops. Bulli was the signal that he was nearly at Dave's place.

The drive home was a different story. Mount Ousley. Andrew had this yellow Mitsubishi Colt that was held together by optimism and not much else. Foot flat to the floor up Mount Ousley, blue smoke pouring out the back, no air conditioning, windows down in January, engine screaming. I have heard this story probably forty times. He still laughs about it. Every time a Bulli order comes through, actually, he mentions the Colt. I think the car traumatised him more than he admits.

Wollongong ended up being one of the early towns we expanded into when we were building the florist network from our home office in Pottsville around 2009. Andrew already knew the area from years of visiting Dave. He knew where Bulli sat in relation to Thirroul, Woonona, Corrimal. That familiarity made it easier to talk to florists in the region because he could actually picture the streets they were describing.
