Andrew's Yellow Colt and the Road Through Bulli

Andrew and I started this from a tiny shop in Kingscliff in 2006, and we now work with over 800 partner florists across Australia. Andrew spent half the 90s driving through Bulli to visit his mate Dave at Wollongong Uni. The yellow Mitsubishi Colt that got him there has a story worth telling.

Andrew's mate Dave studied computer science and engineering at the University of Wollongong in the mid 90s. Andrew was down there constantly. Crashing on Dave's floor, eating two minute noodles at midnight, doing whatever uni mates do when one is studying and the other is just there for the weekend. The quickest way from Sydney was the freeway, but Andrew always took the coastal road through Bulli on the way down because he liked it. That narrow strip of suburb between the escarpment and the ocean, the Norfolk pines near the beach, the houses climbing up towards the Tops. Bulli was the signal that he was nearly at Dave's place.
The drive home was a different story. Mount Ousley. Andrew had this yellow Mitsubishi Colt that was held together by optimism and not much else. Foot flat to the floor up Mount Ousley, blue smoke pouring out the back, no air conditioning, windows down in January, engine screaming. I have heard this story probably forty times. He still laughs about it. Every time a Bulli order comes through, actually, he mentions the Colt. I think the car traumatised him more than he admits.
Wollongong ended up being one of the early towns we expanded into when we were building the florist network from our home office in Pottsville around 2009. Andrew already knew the area from years of visiting Dave. He knew where Bulli sat in relation to Thirroul, Woonona, Corrimal. That familiarity made it easier to talk to florists in the region because he could actually picture the streets they were describing.

Why Coastal Suburbs Need Different Flowers

"Bulli sits right on the coast with the escarpment behind it, which creates this funnel effect where cool air rolls down from the Tops and mixes with warm, salty ocean air. That humidity actually helps certain stems hold water longer than they would inland. Roses and chrysanthemums can get an extra two or three days of vase life in a humid coastal home compared to somewhere dry like Dubbo."
"But salt is the problem. Salt crystals land on petals and draw moisture out through osmosis. Anything with thin, delicate tissue, sweet peas, gardenias, some of the finer spray roses, will brown at the edges within a couple of days in a front row Bulli house near Sandon Point. I would always steer people towards hardier varieties for beachside addresses. Gerberas, standard roses, banksias, chrysanthemums. Things with thicker petal walls or a waxy coating that repels the salt before it settles."
"The houses that climb up towards Bulli Tops are a different situation. Shadier, cooler, more protected from the salt. You can get away with softer stems up there. What to Send to Bulli
Bulli has that mix of older locals who've been in the same weatherboard for decades and younger families who moved for the beach and the escarpment walks. The reasons people send flowers here vary, but a few come through more than others.
Sending sympathy to Bulli?
Anna tends toward whites, soft creams, and muted greens for sympathy. Calming tones that sit quietly in a room without competing with grief. Our Illawarra florists handle sympathy regularly and will coordinate with the funeral director on service times if needed. If flowers are going to the family home rather than the service, a sympathy arrangement in a vase means the family doesn't need to find one during an already difficult time.
Flowers for someone in hospital?
Wollongong Hospital is a short drive from Bulli, and we deliver there regularly. Go with a boxed or vase arrangement rather than a hand tied bunch because hospital rooms don't have vases, scissors, or bench space. Avoid heavily scented stems like oriental lilies in small rooms. How to Order Flowers to Bulli

Same day cutoff: 2pm weekdays, 10am Saturdays. Anna's reasoning is straightforward. Flowers metabolise faster in afternoon heat, and delivery vans sitting in summer traffic can hit 40 degrees inside. Arrangements made and dispatched before the thermal peak of the day arrive in better condition. The Saturday 10am cutoff exists because florists work compressed weekend routes and need time to source, condition, and arrange before the delivery window closes.
No Sunday delivery. Flower markets close Saturday afternoon. Friday stock loses roughly 30% of its vase life by Sunday. Anna's position is that sending two day old flowers defeats the purpose. We agree.

Your order is routed to the nearest available Illawarra partner florist with the right stock. They source from the market that morning, condition the stems (cutting, hydrating, removing excess foliage), build your arrangement fresh, and their local courier delivers it to the Bulli address you've provided. If nobody is home, the courier will leave flowers in a safe, shaded spot away from direct sun. If that's not possible, they'll call the recipient to arrange an alternative.
