Defence families, expats, parents who have moved to another country but still want to mark a birthday or say thank you. Townsville homes run aircon hard. Dry season, wet season, pretty much all year round. Airconditioned rooms pull moisture from everything, including cut flowers. The stems drink faster than you'd expect in a space that feels cool.
I tell people to change the vase water every single day in Townsville, not every two or three days like you might further south. And if the bunch is near a vent or in the direct path of an aircon unit, move it. Aircon kills flowers faster than heat does. The cold dry blast hitting the petals directly will brown them out in a couple of days. Find a spot with indirect light, away from the airflow, and you'll get close to double the vase life.
I took a call once from a mum in Adelaide whose son had just been posted to Townsville. She wanted to send a welcome arrangement to his new house near Lavarack. Both can work in the right conditions, but the NQ growers give Townsville florists access to stems that southern warehouses can't match. The visual difference is noticeable too.
