Order before 2pm on a weekday, or 10am on a Saturday, and the flowers are at their door in Rozelle today. Choose the Australian Natives Bunch for a birthday or the Gorgeous White Arrangement for a funeral from our same-day range below, and for a bed at Balmain Hospital add the ward and the patient's full name to the notes. Or call us, and one of our friendly, Australian-based team will go through the address and the card with you.
Same-day flowers for a Rozelle flat: the water inside an arrangement goes off before the flowers do
Nearly three in four Rozelle homes are a terrace, townhouse or flat, so an arrangement that arrives ready to sit on a bench is the easy order: nobody has to find a vase. Inside, most are built in a block of foam, soaked at the florist. After a few days that water goes stagnant, the stem bases turn slimy, and the heads drop before they should.
I first saw it at Salt in Kingscliff: an arrangement that looked perfect from above and smelled swampy underneath. Draw the old water out with a baster or a sports bottle, refill every few days, and the stems keep drinking.
Birthday, new baby, funeral or none of those: each needs something different in the notes, and a ready-made arrangement is the easy order for a flat.
It's their birthday, you can't be there, and it falls on a Saturday. A lot of Rozelle spends the morning at the market at Rozelle Public School on Darling Street (the bacon and egg roll there is the best I've had anywhere), so put a mobile number and a safe spot, the porch or a neighbour, in the notes. Our bestselling birthday flowers suit a terrace or a unit.
Anna's tip: natives take a spell on a porch in their stride, where soft-petalled stems want the shade.
The baby is here and you are nowhere near Missenden Road. If mum is still in RPA Women and Babies, put the ward and her full name in the notes; if she might be home by delivery, send to the house with 'baby asleep, knock softly'. See our new baby flowers. New parents have no free hands, and I know that feeling: in 2008 I took lilies to Noble Lakeside Park, near our Marine Parade shop, with Asha, nine months old, in the car. Pollen down the shirt, water up the wrist, and a wail that brought the residents to the glass.
For a new baby I would go soft pinks and gerberas, nothing that sheds and nothing that perfumes the room. The Beautiful Pastels Bunch sits in that palette.
You have a name, a date and a funeral notice you have read twice. In our experience the venue and the time come from the funeral director, and the notice names which one: if it says Mannings on Victoria Road, that is the call to make. Just over half of Rozelle records no religion on the census and about one in five records Catholic, so the service may be a Mass at St Joseph's on Gordon Street or a celebration of life somewhere with no altar. Flowers feel like too little for a funeral, and a house with none feels emptier than one with a bunch on the table: families tend to send a sheath or wreath for the service and flowers for the house after. Try 'No words for this one. Thinking of you all.'
White, cream and soft green do not compete with the room, so I would steer a nervous buyer to the White Lily & Rose Sheath. If the notice says celebration of life, or the family asked for colour, go with colour.
You do not need an occasion to send flowers. A teacher at Rozelle Public School on the last day of term, a neighbour who minded the dog, a friend who has had a rough week: all of them fit here, and a thank-you bunch is easy to get right.
Anna has a pick for those: the Colourful Bunch Including Chocolates. The chocolates do the thanking, and the bunch stands happily in a jar.
More ways to say it
Order before 2pm on a weekday and the birthday flowers go out today.
Shop Same-Day Birthday Flowers2pm on weekdays is the last point a florist can make it up and reach the street that afternoon. Saturdays it is 10am, because the florists' day is shorter. No Sunday delivery, except Mother's Day.
Hospital: the ward and full name (Balmain Hospital, Booth Street, or RPA, Camperdown). Funeral: surname, venue and time (St Joseph's, Gordon Street, or wherever Mannings Funerals on Victoria Road has arranged it). Unit: the number and a mobile.
In our experience hospital reception logs the flowers and passes them on, and a funeral venue takes them before the service. If nobody is home, a neighbour or a named spot works. Order by 2pm and the flowers are with them this afternoon.
After you pay, the order goes to a florist in or close to Rozelle, who makes it up for the date you picked. To change anything, email [email protected] or ring 1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm on weekdays.
Mostly nobody rings to say it arrived, and that's fine. A new mum is asleep, someone on a ward has their phone in a drawer, a family the day after a funeral has forty other calls to make (I took enough calls between 2006 and early 2011 to know that silence usually means it landed). What does go sideways is a baby who has gone home before the flowers reach the ward, so if you don't know the date, send to the house. Quiet is just a vase on a windowsill.
