Sending flowers to a new Calderwood house? Choose ones that bring their own water

Anna, qualified florist | on houses where the vases are still packed

The vase is always in the last box. In a house a few weeks old, a hand-tied bunch sits on the bench in its wrap while someone hunts for a vase. Once the little bit of water in the wrap is gone, the stems are drinking nothing, and by evening the roses start to bow at the neck.

An arrangement skips all that. It comes with its own water, usually wet foam in a box or a vase, so it can sit between the moving cartons and keep drinking. I worked that out at Salt in Kingscliff, when Salt was still full of brand-new houses. For a bunch, any clean jug does: recut the stems so they can drink again, and keep the flowers about one and a half times the jug's height so they don't flop.

Calderwood Flowers for Birthdays, New Babies and Funerals

Calderwood went from 173 residents at the 2016 census to 3,013 at the 2021 one, so the houses are new and a lot of the people in them are new to the area. Here's how flowers land for the usual reasons, plus celebration flowers for anyone who has just got the keys.

Send Mum's Birthday Flowers With Her Mobile in the Notes

It's her birthday today and you're ordering from Sydney, or Brisbane, or the other side of the world. Pick from our birthday flowers for mum and put her mobile in the notes, because in a suburb this new the street can be newer than the maps.

I learnt that in 2007 in Pacific Pines on the Gold Coast, with a birthday bunch on the passenger seat and a UBD that didn't have the street in it. Three laps of the same roundabout. In the end a woman at the display village pointed me to the street. She'd sold the block.

If she's only just moved in, send an arrangement from the bestselling birthday flowers. It's built into wet foam, so it keeps drinking on the kitchen counter while the vases stay packed.

A New Baby at Wollongong Hospital, or Already Home

Shellharbour Hospital has no birthing unit, so most Calderwood babies are born at Wollongong Hospital and go home a day or two later. Send new baby flowers to wherever they'll be. For the hospital, add the mother's full name and the maternity ward; in our experience the ward desk takes them in. A card that works: "Welcome to the world, little one."

Anna, on a room with a newborn in it

Nothing heavily scented, nothing that drops petals near the bassinet, nothing so big it fights the bassinet for space. Gerberas have next to no scent and hold their petals, which is why I'd send the 3 Gerberas In A Vase. The vase comes with them.

Name the Venue and the Time for Funeral Flowers

Someone has died and you're sorting the flowers, maybe from a long way off. Funeral flowers go to the venue, so put its name and the start time in the notes: H Parsons' chapel at Dapto or Warilla, say, or St Paul's on Tongarra Road, Albion Park. If the burial is at Albion Park Cemetery on Croome Road, the lawn sections only take flowers in their vase holders, so the big tribute belongs at the service. If you'd rather skip the service, send sympathy flowers to the house instead. "Thinking of you all" is enough on the card. Flowers fix nothing. They still get noticed.

Anna's call: whites and soft greens. Bright colour in a house that's grieving looks like it turned up to the wrong event. The Gorgeous White Arrangement is the one I'd send.

A Housewarming, or No Reason at All

Plenty of orders don't fit a heading: new keys, a thanks for minding the kids on moving day, nothing in particular. You don't need a category to send flowers.

Anna's pick is the Australian Native Arrangement from our native flowers. It needs no vase, and the woody native stems don't mind a warm room with the blinds not up yet. It's also our second most popular product, which says something.

More ways to choose

Still before 2pm on a weekday? An arrangement can be in a Calderwood kitchen today.

Arrangements With Their Own Water

Three Things to Know Before You Order

When to order

Weekdays, before 2pm for delivery today, which leaves the florist time to make it and get it out the same day.
Saturday, before 10am, as Saturday runs finish early.
After those times, choose a later date at checkout.
No Sunday delivery, except Mother's Day.

What the notes need

A mobile, and the nearest cross street if the street is new, Escarpment Drive or Calderwood Road for example. For Wollongong or Shellharbour Hospital, the full name and the ward. For a funeral, the chapel or church and the start time. For a teacher at Calderwood Christian School, the teacher's name.

Who takes them

At a house, whoever answers; if nobody does, in our experience the florist rings the mobile in the notes. At a hospital it's the ward desk, and at a school the front office. Order before 2pm on a weekday and it's on today's run.

If It Goes Quiet After Delivery, That's Normal

Once you've ordered, your order goes to a florist in or close to Calderwood, who makes the flowers on the day and delivers them. You get an email confirming the order.

To check it's landed, ring us on 1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm weekdays and from 10am Saturday. To change a name, an address or the card, email [email protected].

In 2007 and 2008 the Illawarra was one of our ten busiest delivery areas, back when we were still the Kingscliff Florist and Gift Shop. Calderwood wasn't part of that. Calderwood was mostly paddocks.

Siobhan, on new houses and slow replies

A new baby, a new house, a funeral: none of those are weeks when people ring to say thank you, so don't read anything into the quiet (I always did with my own, and I heard plenty of people do the same back when I took the calls at the Marine Parade shop). If something isn't right though, tell us the day it arrives and send a photo, because it's so much quicker to fix when we can see it.

Andrew and Siobhan bought a flower and gift shop on Marine Parade, Kingscliff, in 2006 and started Lily's Florist in 2009. Until then they delivered thousands of bouquets themselves around the Tweed, the Gold Coast and Byron, John Flynn and Tweed hospitals included, and more half-built estates than Andrew can count.

Andrew was on the phones himself until 2013, Siobhan until 2011. The whole story, fax machine included, is on our about Lily's Florist page.
