Mum's birthday falls on a weekday, she lives on a few acres off the main road, and you will not be at the table. Send birthday flowers for Mum to the house, or pick from the whole birthday range if the flowers are for someone else. If she is down the paddock when the florist pulls up, her mobile on the order means the florist can ring her before anything gets left out in the sun (and yes, she will ring you straight after to say you shouldn't have).

Somebody has been keeping an eye on your parents' place: fed the dogs while they were away, checked the tank, drove Dad to an appointment in Maleny. The flowers nearly always go to the neighbour's own house, and the size should match the favour, a thank-you bunch for a week of dog feeding, something bigger for a month of trips to the hospital. Country neighbours never seem to expect a thank-you, which is half the fun of sending one.

Send lilies. Each stem carries several buds that open one after another, so the bunch looks different on day six than it did on day two. Pinch off the anthers, the pollen-heavy tips in the middle, as each flower opens, and the pollen stays off the tablecloth.
