Echuca Flower Delivery, Both Sides of the River

Someone makes it by hand in the morning and it is at an Echuca door that afternoon. Not a box off a truck from Melbourne like some of our competitors do. The order gets sent out to a partner florist, who builds it from stock they bought that week. Order by 2pm and it goes today, anywhere in Echuca, Victoria. Saturday closes at 10am, and there is no Sunday delivery (except for Mother's Day of course), in either state. In either state, because a good share of what people call an Echuca address sits over the bridge in Moama and one run covers both sides. If the address is awkward, ring our Australian based staff on 1300 360 469 before you order.

Craig rang his order through, for his mum, on the busiest day of the florist's year

"Very happy will use again. Showed me alot to choose from and when I spoke to the girl on the phone she was very helpful in talking my order and they looked better when my mum received them on mother's day"

Andrew and Siobhan replied

Thank you, Craig. Mother's Day is the hardest day of the year to hold quality, it's the busiest we get by a distance, and it's the day a bunch is most likely to turn up looking like it had a rough morning. Yours went the other way and looked better than the photo. That's a florist near your mum having a good day under the worst load of the year. Good that you rang, as well. The team on the phones can walk you through the range quicker than clicking about does. Glad your mum got a good one. Thanks for writing. Andrew & Siobhan Lily's Florist

See what a florist here builds
The cutoff, and what sets it

2pm weekdays, 10am Saturdays. Sourcing, building and driving all fit inside those hours.

Where the orders land

It lands at a house, a ward at Echuca Regional Health, an aged care reception, a funeral home, or a front desk over the bridge.

A lot of Echuca is NSW

The golf resort, the winery and a funeral home sit in Moama, New South Wales. Two bridges, one run.

What actually turns up

One order, one arrangement, built the morning it goes out. Not pulled from a batch made the day before.

It is the dry that gets a bunch here, not the heat, and the fix is which stems you start with

Anna, qualified florist | hired in 2010 because florists would take her seriously

An Echuca January afternoon runs about 31 degrees, and outside the humidity drops near 29 per cent. Behind an air conditioner it is drier again. Dry air pulls water out through the petals faster than the stem replaces it, and the big thin-petalled flowers go first. Hydrangea is the worst of them, and its season here runs December to March, straight through the worst of it.

Winter is the opposite, and it is why tulips are worth sending here between June and August. The room stays cool, the flower opens through the afternoon and shuts by morning, which is thermonasty, and that cycle adds days to the vase life. Ten to fourteen days in a cool room, in our experience. Tulips are a bulb crop, though, which is why they stay out of an aged care room. Turn the vase twice a day or the stem leans at the window.

No Sunday run, and the reason is the market. It does not trade on a Sunday, so anything landing that day was bought Friday or Saturday and has already spent a day waiting.

What the 2pm Cutoff Actually Buys You

Three ways the same Tuesday order can go.

Weekday morning

At the door this afternoon

Full pick of what came in this week.

1.55pm, weekday

Still the same day

Inside the cutoff by five minutes. Sourcing is done, so it comes out of the cool room.

2.30pm, weekday

Tomorrow

Nothing gets built overnight. Half an hour past the cutoff costs a day.

Late on a birthday is a disappointment. Late on a funeral cannot be undone. The cutoff is protecting both.

What to Send, and Which Door It Goes To

The three hardest addresses here each want something different, and format does more work than flowers at all three. Hence the vase or box arrangement below.

Can flowers get to a ward at Echuca Regional Health?

You are working off a ward name someone texted you from the car park. Day surgery and home tomorrow, send it to the house. Otherwise the get well order needs the patient's full name and the ward. The hospital publishes ward names, no numbers, and the switchboard will name the ward if you do not have it.

Anna, qualified florist

Skip the lilies. In our experience they are the flower hospitals restrict most on an Australian hospital delivery, and at least one Victorian hospital group bans them by name on airborne pollen. Roses, gerberas, carnations and chrysanthemums clear it. Peace lilies and orchids are not Lilium at all. No potted plants, the soil is the problem. Vase or box, because in our experience a ward keeps no spare vase.

Which side of the river the service is on changes the address, not the day

The venue catches people out. A service can be at a funeral home on High Street here or on Blair Street in Moama, which is New South Wales on an order that says Echuca. The cemetery on Homan Street in Echuca West is a separate trip. A name and a relationship is enough on the card.

Nearly half this town reports no religion, so plenty of these are celebrations of life, where bright is expected and white-only is the thing to avoid, which catches people taught the opposite. Red is safe at a Western Christian service and almost nowhere else. A casket spray lies on the lid, a wreath stands on its own.

A residence needs an arrangement that looks after itself

Five residential aged care homes across Echuca and Moama, and Glanville Village sits on the hospital campus with its own entrance on Haverfield Street. Name the building or the driver takes it to the wards. Rooms are small and often shared, so a thinking of you arrangement has to fit beside the medication.

A box, every time, for a residence. It does not tip, needs no vase, and carries its own water, which matters where the water does not get changed often. Roses, daisies, lavender: stems a resident knows from her own garden. No bulbs, nothing strongly scented in a shared room.

Saturday orders close at 10am. Anything after that lands on Monday.

Send thinking of you flowers

You do not have to pick a category

Plenty of what we take here arrives with no occasion attached at all. Give us the address type and the date. Anna's view is that the morning bench beats the photo.

A florist's choice is built from whatever is strongest on the bench that morning, so it beats a stem-for-stem match to a photo shot months ago. July is tulips and ranunculus, anywhere but a residence, January chrysanthemum and carnation. Keep the carnations off the kitchen bench, ripening fruit ages them in a day.

Echuca Delivery Questions, Answered Straight

Do you have a florist shop in Echuca?

No, and we never have. The order goes as a paid job to a florist in or near Echuca, Victoria, who builds it that day from their own stock.

Can you deliver to a resort or a holiday park?

Yes, and the front desk is the address. Put the booking name on the order as well as the recipient's, because a desk cannot match a room to a name it has no booking for. A reception that shuts at five is the deadline that actually binds, not our 2pm.

Do you deliver to Moama as well?

Yes, same run, same fee. Moama is four minutes over the bridge, and it is a New South Wales address with a 2731 postcode on an order that says Echuca.

Can flowers go to a houseboat or a paddlesteamer?

Only as far as the hire base or the wharf, and only once you have rung them. A boat runs to a departure time, and in our experience the operators do not publish what they will hold.

Ordering Flowers to Echuca and Moama

Cutoffs

2pm weekdays, 10am Saturdays. Later and it runs the next working day.

Where we reach

Echuca, Echuca West, Echuca Village and Moama, New South Wales. Flat $16.95, which we subsidise. A regional run costs more than that.

Ring first if it is complicated

1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm weekdays, from 10am Saturdays. Worth it for a ward, a residence or a front desk.

The two quiet hours nobody tells you about

Echuca Regional Health publishes a rest period between 1pm and 3pm. An order clearing our 2pm cutoff lands inside it, which is fine, the ward desk still takes it in. But if you want them in the room before the afternoon visitors, aim for the morning. Order before midday and it is on the bedside table before they walk in.

After You Order

You get an order number straight away. The job goes out with the address, the ward or room if there is one, and your card message typed the way you wrote it. If the arrangement looks wrong, email photos the same day, front and back, to [email protected].

A woman rang on the Saturday before Mother's Day in 2012 wanting flowers to her mum in Echuca, and it was ten past ten when the phone went. The cutoff was 10am then and it is 10am now. She got the Monday, and was not thrilled with me about it. Order that one on the Thursday.

Siobhan, the other half of this, on the part after the van leaves

Most people hear nothing back on the day. Whoever gets them on the day rings their sister before they ring you, they always do, and the silence is almost never about the flowers. Valentine's week in 2011 I was eight and a half months pregnant with Ivy and the phones started at half past six, so I know what going out under load looked like. If one does not match the photo, send it the same day, while the florist still has the stems.

We bought a flower shop in Kingscliff in 2006, which is where the flowers part of this started, and the network came three years after. Two of the towns that said yes in 2009 were Albury and Mildura, both on the same river as Echuca, one upstream and one down. I have never lived here and will not pretend otherwise.

Siobhan and I still own the lot of it, and there is more on how it got built, badly at first, over on about Lily's Florist.
