Gerberas suit a birthday in an Edmonton family house, as long as someone knows about the neck

Anna, qualified florist | on why a gerbera bows its head

Gerberas are bright, they carry no scent, and they read as a party, which makes them an easy pick for a kid’s birthday in a family house. The stem is hollow (florists call it a scape) and water pressure is what holds the head up. In a warm room, bacteria cloud the vase water fast, the stem stops drinking, the pressure drops, and the flower folds over at the neck.

It was the first thing I got wrong when I was learning the trade in North Carolina. Change the water every couple of days. If a head does bow, recut two centimetres off the stem and stand it in a little warm water for an hour, and most of them come back up.

Birthdays, Hospital Stays and Goodbyes in Edmonton

Edmonton’s median age is 33 and three households in four are families, so the occasions are birthdays, new babies, hospital stays, grandparents in care and, sometimes, a funeral. A flower arrangement in its own container works for most of them.

A Birthday at the House, or in a Care Room

It’s their birthday and you’re sending from somewhere else. To a house, add a mobile and a shady spot in case nobody’s home. To a room at Edmonton Gardens, the full name and room number do the finding, and in our experience reception signs and staff carry the flowers through. Siobhan and I walked flowers into hundreds of nursing homes on the Tweed between 2006 and 2009, and every one started at reception. Start with our birthday flowers, or 80th birthday flowers for the big one.

Anna’s call: for a kid at the house, the Gerbera Bunch + Teddy + Birthday Balloon, and tell them to change the water. For a care room, woody natives hold a week or more even in that heat, which makes the Australian Native Arrangement the safe pick.

New Baby or Get Well: Send It to the Ward

Someone is in Cairns Hospital, or a baby has just arrived there, and you’re getting the news by text. Put the patient’s full name and ward in the notes, or wait and send to the house once they’re home; our hospital flowers and new baby flowers work at either address. I learned about scent in 2007, carrying a vase of oriental lilies into the maternity ward at John Flynn at Tugun. You could smell it from the lift. The midwife was very polite about it, and it went home with the dad. On the card, “Get well soon. We’re all thinking of you” says enough.

Anna, on the ward

Nothing that sheds, nothing heavily perfumed, and something already in water. The Blue Mist Including Vase & Chocolates arrives in its own vase.

Sympathy Flowers Can Go to the Service or the Kitchen Table

You have the notice and you can’t be there. The nearest services are at Forest View Cemetery on Foster Road and the Cairns Crematorium, both in Mount Sheridan, and in our experience the funeral director takes the flowers in, so add their name and the service time. Wreaths and sheaths are made for the service, and sympathy flowers for home are for the house afterwards. Flowers are a small thing against what has happened, and people still remember who sent them. “Thinking of you all” is enough on the card.

White and soft green won’t argue with anything at a service. A tall vase on lawn tips as soon as the wind gets under it, and a wreath lies flat and stays put, which is why I’d steer you to the White Funeral Wreath for a graveside.

Still Not Sure What to Send?

Plenty of orders come without a heading: a new job, a rough week, the neighbour who fed the cat. That’s what our just because flowers are for, and this one I’ll hand to Anna.

Go soft rather than loud. The Lovely Lilac & Lime Bunch belongs on a birthday table or a bedside, and lilac with lime never looks like a party or a funeral.

No Phone Call by Dinner Is Normal

Once you pay, one of our partner florists near Edmonton makes it and drives it out. If there’s a problem at the address, the florist rings the number on the order. Changes go to [email protected], and 1300 360 469 is answered 7am to 6pm weekdays and Saturday mornings.

Siobhan, on the thank-you that comes late

People with a three-day-old baby don’t ring anyone, and neither does a nan after a big morning of visitors (I’d forgive them both). The thank-you comes later, usually a photo. In our phone years, when one went wrong it was nearly always a room number that had changed, so if you’re unsure, ring the home first. It takes a minute.

Not happy with how it arrived? Send us a photo the same day and we’ll sort it.

Siobhan and I bought the flower shop on Marine Parade in Kingscliff in 2006 and did most of the deliveries ourselves until about 2009, often with a baby seat in the back.

The Cairns area was one of our ten busiest delivery areas in 2007 and 2008, and in 2009 Cairns became one of the first eight towns in the network. The rest is on the about Lily’s Florist page.
