Flowers for a beach cabin need to handle the sea breeze

For a cabin at Ellis Beach, send stems that can take salt air, or count on the vase living indoors. The breeze off the Coral Sea carries salt, and salt that settles on a petal draws the water out of it. Soft petals go papery at the edges within a couple of days on an open verandah. Leathery and waxy stems shrug it off: protea, leucadendron, waxflower.
I learnt that at the boutique at Salt in Kingscliff, where the breeze came straight in off the beach. Roses and lilies do beautifully at Ellis Beach too, on a table inside with the door shut on the wind. In a warm cabin, leucadendron goes ten days to a fortnight in my experience. Keep every vase off the verandah rail.
Holiday Birthdays, Anniversaries and Wedding Weekends at Ellis Beach
The 2021 census counted five residents at Ellis Beach, so the person you are sending to is usually there for a few nights. We deliver anywhere along the beach: a cabin or powered site at the holiday park, the Ellis Beach Bar & Grill, the Cairns Yacht Club's clubhouse on the sand. Our native flowers suit this stretch of coast best.
A Birthday in a Beachfront Cabin, or Down on the Sand
They chose Ellis Beach for the birthday and you are sending from somewhere else. The mobile in the notes matters more than the site number, because a beachfront site on a warm afternoon is usually empty. Our birthday flowers go to a cabin or a site just the same.
In January 2008 Andrew walked a birthday bunch along Marine Parade from our shop to a beachfront site at the Kingscliff Beach Holiday Park. Annexe up, thongs on the mat, nobody home. He found the birthday girl in the surf and stood at the waterline in his work shoes until she came in (the lifesavers enjoyed it, he says). Ellis Beach is the same set-up, water out the front.

An Anniversary Trip Wants Something Waiting in the Room
Mum and Dad drove up for their anniversary, or you are there with your partner and want something waiting when you both get back from the beach. If You Missed the Wedding, Send Flowers to the Morning After
The invitation said Ellis Beach and you could not get there. The day itself is busy, so in our experience flowers to their cabin the next morning land better, with both names in the notes. Flowers are a poor stand-in for being on the sand, and they still get photographed. A card can be short: "Congratulations, you two. Sorry I missed the dancing." Not Sure What Suits a Beach Stay?
Some sends have no heading at all: a friend finally on the trip north they have talked about for years, a sister who took the leave. This one I will hand to Anna.
Go the Australian Native Arrangement. Natives are built for salt air and heat, and they look like they belong on the coast. If natives are not their thing, the rest of our flower arrangements do well indoors, back from the breeze.

Who takes it
Whoever is at the cabin or site. From what our florists tell us, an empty site gets a phone call before anything is left in the sun. After Cyclone Jasper in December 2023 the highway along this stretch was shut, and when heavy rain closes it, deliveries wait for the road. In before 2pm, it goes up the highway today.

Silence From a Beach Cabin Is Normal
Once it is ordered there is nothing left for you to do. Want to know it landed? Ring 1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm on weekdays and on Saturday mornings, or email [email protected]. And if nobody rings to say thanks, give it a day. Phones on holiday live in the car, or under a towel.

Holiday addresses expire. Confirm their check-out date before you pick a delivery day, because the morning after, the cabin has someone else in it. From 2006 to 2009 Siobhan and I carried flowers into holiday parks, resorts and unit blocks on the Tweed and the Gold Coast. The cabin number gets you to the door. The check-out date gets you there while they are still inside. Not happy with how it arrived? Email a photo the same day and we sort it.
Send it. The beach will still be there once they have read the card.
