Today works for flowers in Harlaxton. Any weekday order in before 2pm goes out this afternoon to a house, a hospital bed or a Downlands College boarder (boarding house in the notes), and later orders go on the date you pick at checkout. Nobody home? Name a shaded spot or a neighbour in the notes too. The Australian Natives Bunch and the Bright Bunch + Teddy + Birthday Balloon are in our same-day range below, ready to buy securely online, or call us and a friendly voice on our Australian-based team will take the order, card message and all.
Natives for a Busy Harlaxton House or a Boarder's Desk
If nobody at the other end is going to change the water, send natives. Banksia, protea and leucadendron were what I always put together for a house like that, because their dense, woody stems drink slowly and hold their shape: a leucadendron goes two to four weeks in an ordinary room, a protea ten days or more. That's why native flowers suit a flat-out family kitchen or a boarder's desk.
Split the bottom few centimetres of each stem with secateurs so the wood can take water up, and top the vase up daily, because a protea drinks hard. Black protea leaves mean the flower head is feeding on them, and the first time I saw it I nearly binned a good stem.
Birthdays come first and sympathy second, and Harlaxton adds a boarding school and two nearby hospitals to the usual front doors. If you're not sure there's a vase at the other end, our flower arrangements arrive in their own.
The birthday is today, at a house in Harlaxton or with a boarder at Downlands College on Ruthven Street. For Downlands, add the student's full name and boarding house (Vandel, Piperon, Treand or Jouet); in our experience the front office takes it in.
I learned why the boarding house matters in 2008, at The Southport School on the Gold Coast, holding a birthday bunch from our Kingscliff shop and only a first name. The office paged the boy out of class. He collected it in front of half his year, said thanks to the floor and left at speed. Nobody had told me which boarding house he was in.
Anna's pick: something in its own vase for a boarder, since nobody in a boarding house owns one, and any of the bestselling birthday flowers for a house.
You've had a text saying they're in hospital and not much else. That's enough for get well flowers today. Put the hospital, the ward and their full name in the notes (St Andrew's Toowoomba Hospital on North Street, or Toowoomba Hospital on Pechey Street), and from what we've seen the front desk sends them up once the ward checks the name. A card that suits most stays: "Thinking of you. Home soon."
Send it ready to stand. Wards keep no spare vases, and gerberas carry no scent to bother the next bed, so 3 Gerberas In A Vase is where I'd steer you, or anything in the hospital flowers range that comes in its own water.
You have a notice with a time and a church on it. For a service at Sacred Heart Church on North Street, put the time and the funeral director in the notes (Heritage & Heritage on James Street, say, or McGrath Funerals on Mylne Street). For the family home, the Florists Choice Sympathy Bunch from our sympathy flowers for home suits a kitchen table. A card can be short: "Thinking of you all, with love."
A wreath is over in an afternoon, and its card can sit in a drawer for twenty years.
For the church, pick a wreath or sheath. It lies flat on a coffin or a stand and can't tip, where a tall vase on a church step goes over the first time somebody brushes past. Whites and soft greens from the white sympathy flowers don't compete with anything in that room.
Plenty of orders don't fit a heading: a new job, a rough week, a mate who helped you move. You don't need a reason, and our just because flowers are there for exactly that.
Anna's call: the Beautiful Pastels Bunch. Soft pinks and lilac sit easily in almost any room. If you know they love colour, go the other way with the Florists Choice Bright Mixed Bunch.
Other ways to choose
Ordered before 2pm on a weekday, a birthday bunch goes out today.
See Birthday Flowers2pm weekdays, when the afternoon run is built.
10am Saturday, a shorter trading day.
Later than that, pick the date at checkout.
No Sunday delivery, except Mother's Day.
Downlands College: full name and boarding house. St Andrew's or Toowoomba Hospital: ward and full name. Sacred Heart Church: service time and funeral director. A house: a mobile, and a shaded spot.
The Downlands front office, the hospital front desk, or the funeral director's staff. At a house, whoever answers; if nobody does, the florist tends to ring you. In before 2pm on a weekday, at their door this afternoon.
Your order is confirmed by email and goes to our partner florist in Toowoomba, who builds it on the delivery day. To change the address or the card, email [email protected] or ring our team on 1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm weekdays and from 10am Saturday. If anything arrives wrong, send us a photo that day and we put it right.
In 2007 and 2008 Toowoomba was one of our ten busiest areas, and every order was written out on paper at the Marine Parade counter and then faxed, which seems mad now. What hasn't changed is the quiet afterwards. A boarder won't ring home to say the flowers came, and plenty of grandmothers won't either (too busy showing the neighbours). Now and then nobody's home and the flowers wait in the shade for an hour or two, and I'd still rather that didn't happen.
You write the card. Everything after that is our problem.
