Why Most Arrangements Die Early (And the Fix Takes Ten Seconds)

Leaves below the waterline. That is the single biggest killer of vase life and the thing people skip most often. The submerged leaves start to break down within hours. That breakdown breeds bacteria in the water, and those bacteria multiply until they physically block the stem from drinking. I have watched $150 arrangements collapse in four days because nobody stripped the foliage.

The fix is ten seconds of work. Before the flowers go in the vase, run your hand down each stem and pull off every leaf that would sit under the water level. Every one. Then cut the stems at about forty five degrees so the base cannot seal flat against the vase bottom. An angled cut keeps the plumbing open, which means the stem can draw water properly instead of sitting there slowly dehydrating from the top down.

I picked up this habit early in my training in North Carolina and it stayed with me through fifteen years on the bench. The difference between a five day arrangement and a twelve day arrangement often comes down to this one step.
