What I Got Wrong About Doorstep Survival

Early on, I built arrangements based on what looked right in the cool room. That was the mistake. A hydrangea looks spectacular at 4 degrees under fluorescent light. Put it in a van without climate control for 25 minutes, then leave it on a bare concrete step at 32 degrees because nobody answered the door. The petals brown at the edges. The whole head droops. A customer sent me a photo once. I could see the damage from the thumbnail. The recipient thought we had sent them a cheap job. We had not. We had sent them the wrong stems for the conditions.
The feedback from outer-ring deliveries is what changed my process. Stems arrive in Townsville from Rocklea market in Brisbane overnight by air. By the time they reach a doorstep in Kelso, they have been on four legs: freight from Brisbane, cool room storage, the bench, then the longest van run in the cluster. The new builds in River Parks have no mature trees for shade, no deep verandah on a lot of the modern designs, no covered entry. Two heat exposures, back to back. Chrysanthemums give 10 to 14 days even after both. Carnations have waxy petals that resist drying. Proteas barely register the heat. But anything with thin tissue or high water demand does not come back from a January run to the outer suburbs. I stopped recommending hydrangeas for summer deliveries south of Thuringowa after the third complaint. That was not obvious at the start. It is now.

River Parks Estate is still developing. Some streets do not appear in GPS databases yet. The house exists. The street exists. The mapping software shows a paddock. Include the lot number, the estate name, and a landmark if you have one. "Opposite the park." "Third house past the roundabout." "Next to the display village." Whoever is on the delivery run that day has been covering River Parks for months. They know the layout. The caller in Sydney does not. That two-minute delivery note saves the order. If nobody is home, specify a shaded spot: under the carport, behind the side gate, with a neighbour. In wet season, note that Riverway Drive can be restricted when the dam releases. In February 2019, the dam hit 248 per cent capacity and released 1,900 cubic metres per second into the Ross River. The road was cut. Delivery to Kelso stopped for days. When Beverley says "well designed," she is describing someone who treated the open brief seriously. A Deal Of The Day built with intention has focal stems the eye lands on, supporting stems for density, and a palette that reads as deliberate. A bad one looks like the clearance bin. The half-star drop from five tells me a few builds do not land. The complaint is almost always the same: too much filler, not enough focals. A "happy birthday" build should look different from a "thinking of you" build. Same price, different register. One other review mentioned a late delivery for a birthday. That stings. The 2pm cutoff exists to prevent exactly that, and for Kelso it is worth ordering earlier given the distance.

I worry about the first delivery to a brand-new address. Kelso has more of those than anywhere else in our Townsville network.
