Fresh Flowers for Manly's Peninsula Apartments

You are sending flowers across the water to someone in Manly, and you will not be there when they arrive. You cannot check the stems, smell the arrangement, or see the look on their face. Thirty minutes of harbour is a big enough gap to make you want to get this right. I'm Andrew. My grandmother Shirley lived at 132 Bower Street in the Sierra Apartments, top floor, and the hydrofoil ride from Circular Quay, especially with the swell up past the Heads, was half the reason I begged to go every year. Siobhan and I have run Lily's Florist since 2009, and I still know that stretch of water by heart.

A bunch left on the concrete of a north-facing corridor will be wilting by 4pm, so a florist who knows the Beaches builds the run around a morning drop, the intercom codes, and the safe-drop spots. Three quarters of Manly is apartments, most of them walk-up blocks from the 1960s with no concierge to buzz a courier in. Knowing which door actually opens is what gets your flowers past the lobby and to your person.

"Easy to navigate pictures I ordered from the UK and made an email enquiry first. I received a timely response and had the flowers ordered and delivered very promptly. My friend was delighted! And a weeknight later they still look fab I love that you offer native flowers too."

A note back from Andrew, co-founder

Hi there, What a lovely review, thank you! Ordering from the UK to Manly (I spent a LOT of time there when I was young) and having your friend still delighted a week later - that's exactly what we hope for. I'm so pleased you love our native options too; they're close to my heart and our Manly partner florist does beautiful work with Australian flowers. Thanks for trusting us with such an important delivery from across the world!

Warmly,
Andrew Lily's Florist

What Most People Get Wrong About Ordering Flowers to Manly

Anna, Qualified Florist | North Carolina trained, 15+ years matching stems to where they were going

The complaint I took most often from Manly and the surrounding suburbs was about timing. The flowers were fine. The clock was the problem. Someone orders at 1pm and expects it there by 3pm. At 4pm they ring, asking where the arrangement is. The peninsula funnels through two or three roads, so a florist covering this area batches the run. Your order goes into water at the shop and gets built once the florist has a full load for the Beaches. That might be 90 minutes after you order. It might be three hours. The arrangement is better for the wait, because the stems get time to condition before they go in the van.

Apartment doorsteps are the part nobody thinks about until the flowers are sitting on one. North-facing corridors in January get direct UV even when the air temperature is only 28 degrees. The concrete radiates heat upward. A bunch left at 1pm will be noticeably stressed by 4pm. Morning delivery is the only approach that makes sense for the walk-up blocks on the Eastern Hill and along Bower Street, and a florist who has been covering this area for years already plans for it. I had a caller from Adelaide once who wanted to send David Austins to a friend on Bower Street. I talked her into banksias, proteas, and wax flower instead. Salt is what does the real damage out here. The nor'easter carries it straight off the water into the arrangement, and it pulls the moisture out of a soft petal fast. A garden rose that would hold a week in the dry, still air out at Parramatta browns in half that time on a balcony at South Steyne. Stems with a waxy or woody surface, the natives, the proteas, the wax flower, barely register it. The friend called back a week and a half later to order the same thing for her mother.

How Your Flowers Get to Manly

Your order goes to a florist in or near Manly who sources from Flemington Markets that morning. The route back takes about 40 minutes at 5am. Stems go into water at the shop for conditioning. The florist builds your arrangement from scratch, then drives the Manly run before the afternoon heat hits the apartment corridors.

What to Send to Manly

You have seen how the coastal conditions shape what survives the trip. Now the question is which occasion you are ordering for, because the answer changes what the florist builds. Sympathy orders connect to Manly Cemetery on the Fairlight side and the surf-club celebrations of life that most families here choose over a church service, while anniversary flowers come through steadily from couples who chose the headland for the water views.

Sending sympathy flowers to Manly?

Someone has died and you are trying to do the right thing from a distance. You might not know what the family wants. You might not know if there is a service. That uncertainty is normal.

Most memorial services on the Northern Beaches are celebrations of life, not traditional church funerals. They happen at the surf club, a restaurant on the wharf, or at home with the harbour through the window. Formal wreaths are the wrong fit for those settings. Relaxed arrangements using Australian natives in timber boxes or woven baskets land better. Our sympathy flowers for the home are built for exactly this. Order before 2pm and the florist can have them there today.

Anna, Qualified Florist

When a funeral director on the Northern Beaches tells the family "informal is fine," they mean it. I took a call from a woman in Hobart whose brother's paddle-out memorial was being held off Manly Beach. She wanted something that could sit on a surfboard during the ceremony. We went with sturdy banksias and grevillea tied with natural twine, which you would never build for a chapel service. It was right for Manly. If you are not sure what to write on the card, something simple works: "Thinking of you and the family" or "With love from all of us."

When someone's in a hospital bed or recovering at home

Someone you care about is unwell and you are not close enough to sit by the bed. The flowers stand in for the visit you would make if you could.

Work out where they are first. For a ward at Northern Beaches Hospital out at Frenchs Forest, the arrangement goes to reception and the staff carry it through; in our experience they log it and get it to the right bed. I know that reception scramble from the other side of it, from the early days when Siobhan and I ran the deliveries ourselves, a baby going off in the back seat and five minutes to find a park. For a recovery at home in one of the apartments, a morning drop gets ahead of the heat that builds in the corridor by afternoon. A short line on the card is enough, something like "thinking of you, hope you are on the mend."

Anna spent years on the phones talking hospital callers out of one particular mistake.

A tall hand-tied bunch is the wrong thing to send to a ward. Nobody on the floor has a vase or a spare minute to trim stems, so it sits in its plastic until a visitor deals with it. Send an arrangement in a box or a container instead, something that stands on the bedside table on its own. Keep the scent down while you are at it. In a small room a stargazer lily takes over everything and the pollen marks whatever it lands on. The palliative callers ringing about Manly Waters got steered toward soft, unscented arrangements for the same reason, gentle colours, nothing loud.

Anniversary flowers that hold up on the headland

You remembered, and that counts for more than you think. The couples who chose to live here tend to have strong opinions about what they like. The harbour-side apartments and the places up on the Eastern Hill have views that compete with anything you put on the table, so the flowers need to complement the water rather than fight against it.

From the bench, I would not send soft-petalled roses to a balcony on South Steyne. The coastal exposure will brown them faster than you expect. Orchids and anthuriums are the anniversary stems for a Manly balcony, long vase life, happy in the humidity, and the waxy petals shrug off the salt the breeze carries in. Anthurium is one of the few tropicals I would back for a doorstep drop without worrying. If roses are non-negotiable, make sure the recipient keeps them inside and away from the windows. A florist covering this area already knows that, and romantic arrangements built for coastal delivery hold their shape better than a standard bouquet.

Natives are what Manly actually asks for

If the person lives the outdoor, ocean-adjacent lifestyle the area is built around, natives will land better than a European bouquet. Manly requests them more than almost any other suburb in our network.

Proteas sit at the top of the list. Banksias grow wild on the headlands at North Head, and putting them in an arrangement for someone who lives here feels right because the plants they came from actually do. A king protea centrepiece will outlast every other stem by three or four days, and it dries beautifully afterward. Flannel flowers are the local's pick, that soft grey-green foliage and the felty white bloom, and they take the coast far better than their delicate looks suggest. Wax flower fills the gaps without dropping petals the way baby's breath does when the ocean breeze stresses it. The native pods, brunia and banksia cones, keep their structure long after the soft flowers fade. People put them on a shelf for months.

A birthday when you can't be at the table

You cannot be there this year, so the flowers go in your place. A lot of Manly birthdays are for a parent or grandparent who stayed on the Beaches while the rest of the family spread out, and a milestone one lands differently at that age.

If it is a home address in one of the apartments, a morning slot gets ahead of the afternoon heat and the chance nobody is in to buzz the florist up. If it is a room at Uniting Wesley Heights in the middle of Manly, the arrangement goes to the front desk and the staff walk it through to the resident. Either way, a simple "happy birthday, thinking of you today" on the card does the work.

Anna's Take

For a room in aged care, size and scent matter more than the wow factor. A big fragrant arrangement crowds a small room and the perfume gets heavy indoors, so I keep it neat and low, in a container the resident does not have to lift or fill themselves. Something that lasts is kinder than something dramatic; it sits there being company for a fortnight instead of a long weekend. For a milestone up at one of the pricier addresses on the hill, that is where I would spend up, a king protea centrepiece or a hamper alongside, because the room can carry it and so can the person.

When none of these quite fit the order you are placing

That is fine. You do not need an occasion to send flowers. Our Florist's Choice Bunch lets the florist pick based on what came in best that morning from Flemington. For a tighter budget, flowers under $60 give the same approach with fewer stems.

For Manly I would back the florist's instinct over a customer's photo every time. The florist working that morning knows which stems came in strong and which ones will cope with the coastal exposure on a Manly balcony. A studio photo taken in a climate-controlled room has nothing to do with what will last in a walk-up on Whistler Street. Let the florist choose. It will look different from the photo. It will look better for where it is going.

Asha and Ivy, Back at Manly

Shirley used to wave a red tea towel from the balcony to call me in from the surf for dinner. I ignored her every single time.

Or order online any time.

Same Day Cutoff

2pm weekdays, 10am Saturdays. The Beaches route through two or three roads, so the florist needs time to condition stems and build your arrangement before that run leaves.

Delivery $16.95

We subsidise the real cost. Scarce parking and intercom-only apartments cost more to reach and we absorb the difference. No Sunday delivery, order by Saturday 10am for Saturday.

What If Nobody Is Home?

In a suburb that is 76 percent apartments, it happens. The florist will try the intercom, call the recipient's number if you provide one, and use their judgment on a safe-drop option. If none of that works, they will contact us and we will contact you. Order before 2pm today and the flowers are at the door this afternoon.

After You Order

Your order routes to one of our partner florists near Manly. The florist pulls stems from the cool room, conditions them in water, builds your arrangement by hand, wraps it for transport, and drives the Beaches run. That process takes two to four hours depending on how many orders are ahead of yours. You will not get a real-time update during the build. The confirmation comes when the florist marks the delivery complete.

If something is not right, send photos of the front and back of the arrangement to [email protected] or call 1300 360 469 (7am to 6pm weekdays, 10am Saturdays) within 24 hours. We read every complaint, both photos.

Siobhan, Andrew's partner and the other half of Lily's Florist

I hear from customers who ordered internationally more than any other group when something goes wrong, because they cannot see the arrangement themselves and they are relying entirely on the recipient's reaction. A mother in Bristol sending flowers to her daughter in Manly has no way to check. If the daughter says "they were nice," that could mean anything. So if you are ordering from overseas and you want to know what was delivered, ask us. When you do, it is me or Andrew who follows it up, usually from the kitchen table, ringing the florist ourselves. Two people have run Lily's Florist since 2009, and we would rather chase the detail for you than have you sit there wondering. And if the recipient has not messaged you yet, give it a day. People get busy. Silence does not mean the flowers were wrong.

When our network started covering Sydney in 2008, we had one florist doing the whole city from western Sydney. The drive to Manly took well over an hour each way and the Beaches funnelled everything through the same narrow streets. She managed it with aplomb. We now have multiple florists covering this side of the harbour, but I think about that first drive every time a Manly order comes through.

My grandfather's father fought in the First World War and brought back a German helmet from the Somme. It sat in the spare room at my grandparents' apartment in Manly along with a full collection of medals and papers. The helmet had shrunk so much it did not fit me at six. Carpet bowls down the long corridor to the front door. Rubbish went down the incinerator shaft, they burned it, circa 1979. The swell going past the Heads on the hydrofoil from Circular Quay made the whole trip feel like a ride.

Siobhan and I bought a flower shop in Kingscliff in 2006 with a baby due in seven months and an accountant who told us not to. The shop accidentally ended up listed under "flower delivery" in the Yellow Pages instead of "florist," and the phone started ringing for places we could not reach. That mistake became the business model. We built a network, florist by florist, and now 800+ partner florists cover every corner of Australia. We still run it from the same home office, two people, dinner table decisions. Read the full story.
