Damp, still air is what a Mullumbimby bunch has to get past

Anna, qualified florist | humidity, wrapping and grey mould

What finishes a bunch early in Mullumbimby is damp air that doesn't move, like a closed-up lounge room on a muggy summer afternoon. That's when grey mould wakes up. Florists call it botrytis, the spores are on everything, and a rose wrapped tight in that air can show fuzzy grey patches by morning. I learned it at Salt in Kingscliff, which gets the same sticky summers.

So if the bunch turns up wrapped, get it out of the wrap and into water that day. Roses do beautifully here with a window open or a fan going, and if an outer petal spots, pull it off and the bloom underneath is fine. Banksia and leucadendron have tough leaves and woody stems, so the humidity does them very little harm.

4 Addresses, 4 Different Lines in the Notes

Tap where the flowers are going

The hospital tab catches people out: the town's own hospital closed in June 2016, and Byron Central at Ewingsdale took its place.

In the notes
The street number and the recipient's mobile. If they might be out, name a shady spot, like the back verandah.

Send a birthday bunch

In the notes
Out Main Arm or Wilsons Creek way the house number is often down on the road, or nowhere at all. Add the property name, which gate, and the recipient's mobile.

See our native range

54 Ewingsdale Road, Ewingsdale
The patient's full name, and the ward if you know it. Flowers tend to go to the ward desk first.

See get well flowers

1 Reservoir Road, Mullumbimby
The resident's full name and room number. A smaller arrangement suits a bedside table.

Birthdays, Get Well and Sympathy Flowers for Mullumbimby

Birthdays are what we send most, here like everywhere else, often for family who can't get to Mullumbimby on the day. A hand-tied bunch from our flower bunches range travels well to a house.

Their Birthday, and You Can't Be There

You've got the date right, but you're hours away. Most birthday flowers here go to a house in town or a farm further out, and if nobody's home one of our partner florists tends to ring the recipient's mobile, so put it in the notes. There's a birthday flowers for Mum range too.

On a humid day go for something airy rather than packed tight, because the gaps between the stems let the air through and keep the petals clean.

Hospital Flowers Usually Mean Ewingsdale Now

Mullumbimby's own hospital closed when Byron Central Hospital opened on Ewingsdale Road in June 2016. If all you've got is the town name, send hospital flowers there with the patient's full name, and the ward if you know it. Siobhan and I did our own hospital runs from 2006 to 2009, the old Byron Bay Hospital included, and Murwillumbah Hospital once with Asha screaming in the back seat. The ward desk took the flowers in, so the full name is what got them to the bed.

A card line for the ward: Thinking of you, hope you're home soon. If they're already home, send get well flowers to the house.

Anna's pick: a boxed arrangement. In my experience a ward rarely has a spare vase, and the box does that job.

A Service at St John's, or Flowers for the Family Home

In our experience flowers for a Mullumbimby funeral go through the funeral director, with the deceased's full name and the service time in the notes. That goes for St John's on Murwillumbah Road and for a graveside service at the cemetery on Polar Avenue. Our funeral flowers are made for a service like that, and sympathy flowers for the home can go to the house in the days after. A card line: Thinking of you all, with love.

Anna, on a summer service

A sheaf lies flat and needs no vase, which suits a warm day with nowhere to put water.

Not Sure What to Send?

Plenty of orders don't fit a heading, and that's fine. The Australian Natives Bunch has been our bestseller across Australia since 2013.

If there's banksia or leucadendron in the bunch, stand those in a dry jar once the softer stems have finished, and they keep on a shelf for months. You'll find the bunch with our native flowers.

Usually the recipient, a neighbour, or reception staff who sign and pass the flowers on. For a business on Burringbar Street, check it's open, especially on a Saturday. Order before the cutoff and the flowers are made up that day.

After You Press Order

Your order goes to a partner florist of ours near Mullumbimby once it's paid, and they make it up on the day you picked. If something isn't right, call our team on 1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm weekdays and 7am to 10am Saturdays, or email [email protected] with a photo the same day.

Siobhan, on the quiet bit after the knock

If you haven't heard anything by the night it's delivered, I reckon that's normal. People put the flowers in water, ring their sister and forget to text you. If you'd like to know they've arrived, call the team please and someone will check for you. The farms with no number on the gate give us the most trouble around Mullumbimby, which is why we ask for the property name and a mobile in the notes.

Whatever goes wrong, we'll sort it.

Siobhan and I live 30 minutes up the road in Kingscliff, and we're in Mullumbimby at least twice a month, once for the markets and once just to hang out. We never leave Santos on Burringbar Street without Yogi Soap, the first body soap we ever stocked, in our own organic shop on Marine Parade in 2006. One June day that shop took less than $25, mainly in discounted soap. Yogi Soap is still our favourite.

We started Lily's Florist in 2009, and the rest of the story is on about Lily's Florist.
