In 2006 my partner and I bought a florist & gift shop in Kingscliff on Marine Parade, about a 20 minute drive from Murwillumbah. You can read a much more detailed version of this story here if you are interested.
The long story short, sort of, is that our goal was to scale down the flowers and focus more on gifts like skin care, organic food and clothing, baby gifts and things like that. We even built a website for the store called Down to Earth Organics.
During the 'scaling down' process we were puzzled as to why we kept getting 40+ calls a day for flowers and not long after we found out that the previous owner had paid for a Yellow Pages advertisement, yeah the book, you all remember it! From the calls we were receiving, people were requesting flower orders for Kingscliff of course, but also other areas around the Tweed Shire like Uki, Stokers Siding, Tumbulgum and of course to send flowers to Murwillumbah. Back then, typically this is how flowers were sent to loved ones outside the area they lived, otherwise known in some parts 'wire flowers', before everyone moved online.
After a few months and turning away literally 1000's of phone calls for flowers we decided to scale flowers back up. For some time we had flowers back in the shop and hired a florist to help but that was short lived as we were quite 'space poor' with all the gifts in the store, so we moved that operation to the florists home. From there, we would do all the deliveries we could, but actually, it proved to be logistically challenging for we were doing all the deliveries ourselves with a child still in nappies which was both stressful and tiring.
One Friday night after a long week we were both sitting assessing the week just gone when we had a 'light bulb' moment. What if we visited a local florist in Murwillumbah, told them about what we had been doing, and asked them if they could deliver any any of our Murwillumbah orders for us. We would charge no fees, we only asked that the florist add a few more flowers into the bouquets to cover a very small commision that we would make on each order. The following Monday, I jumped into the car with my daughter and drove out to the Flower Shed in Murwillumbah. I remember it like it was yesterday, I was very nervous, this concept so foreign to us, untested, and a little abstract, but I arrived, grabbed my daughter and in we went.
Wondering how I would break the ice, I placed my daughter on the ground of the shop so I could chat to the florist, I recall with a smile, well she broke the ice for me, and broke one of the gifts in the store on one of the lower shelves. Crash! With my tail between my legs I had the awkward conversation, "I would like to pay for that and, also would you be interested in helping us out with our flower orders...?". The florist smiled and said "yes, I would love to". Murwillumbah was our foundation flower delivery location outside of our hometown. Lily's Florist wasn't quite born at that point but just 1 year later it was. The same daughter who broke the gift is about to graduate year 12, oh gosh, where did time go...
That single partnership in Murwillumbah, formed all those years ago, became the foundation for how we do business today. We're not a massive, faceless company. We're still a family run business and we still live just down the road, dedicated to working with talented local florists who care. The big difference how is that we send flowers all over the Tweed Shire, to all corners, even inter-state!
