We deliver flowers to Nindaroo today. Order before 2pm on a weekday, or 10am Saturday, and they arrive the same day; later than that, pick any day at checkout. Many homes here sit up a long driveway off Mackay-Habana Road, so add the gate and the recipient's mobile in the notes. For a birthday, send our bestselling Australian Natives Bunch; for sympathy, the Gorgeous Whites Bunch. Buy securely online below, or call us and a friendly, Australian-based voice will help you choose.
Which flowers last best out at Nindaroo? Natives, kept in water
Natives are what I'd send out to Nindaroo. The proteas and pincushions in the Australian Natives Bunch are woody and forgiving in the heat. The one to watch is the waxflower, because thirst is what finishes it. A dry stem makes its own ethylene, the gas that tells a flower it's finished, and every tiny flower drops at once. The first time I saw it happen on a hot bench, it looked like someone had shaken the bucket over the floor.
So the bunch wants water within the hour of landing, which is worth a line on the card. If it might sit on a veranda, send the Australian Native Arrangement from the native flowers range instead: it sits in wet foam and drinks while it waits. Watered, waxflower gives about a week in a warm lounge room, in my experience.
Birthdays and sympathy are the two biggest reasons people send flowers through us, and Nindaroo is nearly all homes, so most orders here are going to someone's place. Something to toast instead? Try our celebration flowers.
The birthday is today and the house is up a driveway, out of sight of the letterbox. Put the gate and the recipient's mobile in the notes, then pick from our birthday flowers or the bestsellers.
I learnt about gates in 2008, on an acreage off Glengarrie Road at Bilambil Heights, behind Tweed Heads. Three gates in, three out, each one shut behind me, holding a vase of birthday lilies. The dog joined me at the second and walked me up. Nobody had mentioned the gates. Nindaroo has the same sort, which is why the gate goes in the notes.
When the bunch comes out of its wrap, it wants a wide-necked vase. In a narrow one the stems fight for water and the outside ones droop first.
The funeral notice names a funeral director in Mackay, perhaps Whitsunday Funerals on Shakespeare Street or Mackay Funerals on Alfred Street. Send funeral flowers there with the name of the person who has died and the service time. Flowers for the family home land better a few days later, once the visitors thin out. "With love to you all" is enough on the card. Flowers can't fix what has happened. People still remember who sent them.
Lilies are the classic for a service. Pinch the orange anthers off as each one opens, or the pollen marks the white petals before the day is out.
Mum stayed on at Nindaroo when everyone else moved into town, or someone is home from Mackay Base Hospital and can't drive yet, and the calls have got shorter. Thinking-of-you flowers need no reason, and get well flowers work the same way. Put their mobile in the notes: in our experience the florist rings it when nobody comes to the door. "No reason. Just thinking of you out there."
Anna's call: the Pastel Pink Lilies & Roses Arrangement. It sits in foam, so there's no vase to find, and the lilies open a bud at a time, so there's something new on the table most mornings.
Plenty of orders don't fit a heading: the neighbour who fed the dogs for a week, a well done, a sorry. Our thank you flowers suit most of them, and Anna has one pick that covers the lot.
Send the Blissful Botanics Arrangement. White roses and green spider chrysanthemums, low in a silver cube: nothing to unwrap, no vase, and white and green suit nearly any message. The chrysanthemums outlast the roses by days, so it ages well.

Not sure anyone will be home? Order an arrangement before 2pm on a weekday for today: it carries its own water and can wait in the shade.
Arrangements That Can WaitBefore 2pm on a weekday, so our partner florist in Mackay can make your order for the afternoon run. Before 10am Saturday, a shorter trading day. After that, you pick the date at checkout. No Sunday delivery, except Mother's Day.
A home: the gate, and their mobile. Mackay Base Hospital on Bridge Road, or the Mater hospital on Willetts Road: full name and ward. Glenella Care, the aged care home on Davey Street: the room number. City Funerals on Sydney Street, Whitsunday Funerals or Mackay Funerals: the name of the person who has died and the service time.
At home, whoever answers, or a shady spot you name. On a ward, in our experience, the reception desk takes the flowers in. For a burial on the lawn at Mount Bassett Cemetery, choose a wreath or sheath: it lies flat on the grass, where a vase would tip. Get a weekday order in before 2pm and it goes today.
Once you've paid, our partner florist in Mackay makes the order up on the delivery day and drives it out, and the notes do the steering. If something is wrong when the flowers land, email a photo to [email protected] or ring 1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm weekdays and from 10am Saturday, and we sort it out.
When I was on the phones (2006 until February 2011, when Ivy was nearly here) the worried calls were nearly always this one, the flowers went out at lunchtime and by dinner the sender still hadn't had a thank-you. Out of town that's normal, the person you sent them to is down the back, or feeding something, or the phone is charging on the kitchen bench. The thank-you tends to come after dark, once the jobs are done. If it's eating at you, ring us and someone will check the flowers went. Then go and make dinner.
