Riverfront glass in Noosaville fades a red bunch long before it wilts it
A deep red bunch on a table behind a wall of glass loses its colour well before it loses a petal. The afternoon sun comes in off the river along Gympie Terrace and breaks down the red and purple pigments (florists call them anthocyanins). Within about 2 days a red rose looks pink, even though it's still drinking perfectly well.
I learned this at Salt in Kingscliff. A lot of what we made there went into apartments that were mostly glass. Move the vase a metre back, out of the direct light, and the colour holds. Pale flowers and greenery don't mind the sun much at all.
What to type in the notes for each one.
Their full name and the ward. In our experience it goes to the front desk first.
Their full name and room number. Reception usually signs for it.
The villa or apartment number, and a mobile in case they're down at the pool.
The resort's name, the room, and the name on the booking.
Noosa Hospital and Arcare Noosa share one street, so an order that just says Goodchap Street can end up in the wrong building.
Plenty of Noosaville orders come from family a long way off: a parent on a ward on Goodchap Street, a grandmother in care, an 80th. Sympathy too, and those often sit better as flowers to the house after the service.
Mum's had the knee done, you're in Melbourne, and all you know is she's in Noosa Hospital. If she's going home in a day or 2, send it to the house. If she's staying a while, pop her full name and the ward in the notes.
I learned the vase part at John Flynn Hospital at Tugun, around 2008. Big hand-tied bunch, cellophane, no vase. The lady on the desk looked at the flowers, then at me, and went to find a water jug in the staff kitchen. So for a ward, send hospital flowers that bring their own water. "Feet up. See you when you're home." is plenty for the card.
Anna's pick: gerberas and chrysanthemums. Hardly any scent, so the person in the next bed won't notice them.
You can't get up as often as you'd like, and the phone calls are getting shorter. She's well looked after, but you'd still rather be the one walking in. For Arcare Noosa, add her full name and room number. A card like "Thinking of you, Mum. Ring you Sunday." does the job, and our thinking of you flowers suit it.
Go smaller than you think. The bedside table in a care room already has the glasses, the tablets and the photos on it. A compact arrangement in its own box gets looked at, while a big one usually ends up on the windowsill.
The party's in Noosaville and you're on the video call. Set the birthday itself as the delivery date at checkout, so they land on the day. Start with our 80th birthday flowers or 90th birthday flowers.
If there's a fruit platter on the bench, put the flowers on another table. Ripening fruit gives off ethylene gas, which makes carnation petals curl and finish early, though chrysanthemums aren't bothered by it.
A retirement, a new grandchild down south, someone's finally finished the renovation. None of it needs a category.
Anna's pick: one of our flower bunches built on chrysanthemums and carnations with some lisianthus through it. In a warm Noosaville lounge room the chrysanthemums run 10 to 14 days, and the carnation buds keep opening into the second week, so it looks fuller on day 5 than it did on day 1.

I reckon the hospital orders are the ones that matter most to people. The thing that goes wrong most often is the patient going home before the flowers get there, so if they're due out, send it to the house instead. It's much less hassle for everyone. And if nobody rings to say thanks, don't read anything into it. People in hospital are tired, and people in their 80s don't always reach for the phone. If something isn't right, can you send us a photo please, the same day. We'll fix it.
