Sending flowers to a North Wollongong unit? Assume there's no vase
Rental kitchens and student rooms tend to own everything except a vase, so a wrapped bunch ends up in a jug, a pint glass or a rinsed-out sports bottle. Too wide and the stems splay over the rim by morning. Too narrow and they crush together fighting over the same bit of water, and the ones in the middle go first.
So send flowers that bring their own container: an arrangement set in one, or a bunch that comes with a vase. I learnt that at Salt in Kingscliff, among holiday apartments with nothing in the cupboard but wine glasses. If you do send a plain bunch, tell them to strip every leaf below the waterline: submerged leaves rot, and the rot blocks the stems.
Three in four homes here are units and the median age is thirty, so the person you're sending to is often a friend with a birthday or a student a long way from home. And with two hospitals just south in Wollongong, sometimes they're on a ward.
It's their birthday, and you're only fairly sure of the unit number. Put it in the notes with their mobile, because a name alone leaves the florist pressing every buzzer on the panel. In 2007 that was me, in the foyer of Calypso Plaza on Griffith Street, Coolangatta, reception shut for lunch, Asha on my hip, working down the intercom until a man came down in his socks to say the birthday girl lived next door to him and was at work. A mobile number would have saved us all.
Anna's call: for a birthday in their twenties or thirties, go bright. Gerberas and chrysanthemums shrug off a warm unit with the windows shut.
They're old enough to live out of home and young enough that flowers from home still land like a hug. International House on Porter Street and Campus East on Innovation Way are both here, so add their full name, room number and mobile. For a graduation, have the flowers land at their room the day before the ceremony; for a rough exam week, thinking of you flowers do the talking.
Chrysanthemums and daisies are the forgiving stems for a student desk: happy in a small jug, and they'll ride out a day without a top-up.
The address you have for them is suddenly a ward. At Wollongong Hospital on Loftus Street or Wollongong Private on Crown Street, in our experience flowers go to the front desk and staff take them up, so give their full name and ward, plus a home address in case they're discharged. A short card does it: "Thinking of you. The beach will keep." Our get well flowers and hospital flowers are the place to start.
Keep the arrangement compact and light on scent. Strong perfume fills a shared room fast, so gerberas, roses and chrysanthemums are the kind choice there. From what the florists I worked with saw, some wards, oncology among them, don't take flowers at all, so check with the ward first.
Some orders don't fit a neat occasion: a friend's first flat, a hard week, the flatmate who fed the cat for a fortnight. That's what just because flowers are for.
The Natives Flowers With A Vase. Natives like a bright room, the vase means nobody goes hunting for a jug, and once the softer stems finish, any protea heads and leucadendron cones dry on a shelf for months.
More ways to send flowers
Ordered before 2pm on a weekday, the flowers are at their building that afternoon.
Shop Birthday FlowersBefore 2pm on a weekday, the florist has the afternoon to make up the order and deliver it. Saturday runs finish earlier, so the line is 10am. Miss either, and choose another day at checkout.
No Sunday delivery, except Mother's Day.
Unit number and mobile for any unit block, Bourke Street's included. Room number for International House or Campus East. Full name and ward for Wollongong Hospital or Wollongong Private.
In our experience it's the person themselves, at their door or in the foyer; the hospital front desk; reception at the Novotel on Cliff Road for a hotel guest; or, for a funeral, the funeral director. Put the director's name in the notes (Hansen & Cole on Crown Street or H Parsons on Belmore Street, say), the service time, and the church if there is one, such as St Michael's Cathedral. Get it in this morning and it's with them today.
Once you've paid, the waiting is the hard bit. In a unit block the knock is a buzz, and plenty of people take the flowers up, put them in water and forget to text. To check, our team is on 1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm weekdays and from 10am Saturday, or email [email protected].
In 2007 and 2008 we were still the Kingscliff Florist and Gift Shop on Marine Parade, and the Illawarra was one of the ten areas we sent the most orders to. By 2008 it had its own partner florist, in Figtree. Orders went by fax. Now yours is confirmed and matched to a partner florist near North Wollongong, who makes it on the day. Anything wrong, send us a photo the same day and we fix it.
