Two to four degrees does not sound like much. It is the gap between a block with mature canopy and a cleared lot next to it, and a flower reads that as a week against four days. On the open lot the petals soften from the rim in.
Put the vase out of the afternoon window and strip every leaf below the waterline. A summer of unwrapping returns taught me that a bad bunch is usually a hot windowsill.
No Shopfront Out Here, Same Day Flowers Anyway

The ward on an order is the ward the patient was in when the text was sent, and people get moved. Reception takes it, the clerk logs it, a staff member walks it to the bed. Full name in the notes with the ward and it finds them.
Anna's call: send a box, so nobody on the ward hunts out a vase. At home, draw the old water out of the foam with a baster every few days. Stagnant foam water rots the stems.

Ninety Candles and a Letterbox on the Road
She has been on that block since before the new lots went in, and the number is out on the letterbox. For a ninetieth, name a neighbour in the notes in case your mum is out.
A ninetieth bunch has to keep going, so set it down away from the fruit bowl. Ripening fruit gives off ethylene and flowers read it as the signal to finish: carnations curl, waxflower drops every floret at once.

If Nobody Rings You Back, That Is Normal

I took those calls for years, and the question I got more than any other (about four o'clock, and a bit anxious) was whether they had actually arrived. Most people never hear a thing on the day. The flowers turn up, someone is standing there holding them, and ringing you is about fourth on the list. They are just busy being pleased.
