Roses and natives delivered in Sydenham: what decides how long they last
Plenty of Sydney's roses are grown in Colombia, Ecuador or Kenya, packed dry in cartons and flown into Sydney Airport, the runway the planes passing low over Sydenham are lining up for. They're excellent roses. What decides a full week or half of one is what happens once the carton is opened: a fresh cut at about forty five degrees, clean water with flower food, and a few hours to drink before they're arranged. I learnt to feel the difference in the stem at Salt in Kingscliff. A rushed rose goes soft at the neck by day three.
The banksia and leucadendron in a natives bunch are usually grown in New South Wales and never see a plane, and a leucadendron can give two weeks or more in a Sydney lounge room. Top the vase up every day or two. Natives drink harder than they look.
The cards below cover a birthday, someone in hospital or recovering at home, a funeral, and the orders that fit none of those, all available for same-day delivery. If you'd rather keep it simple, our Australian native flowers suit almost anyone.
It's their birthday and you're nowhere near Sydney. Write Sydenham NSW 2044 in full: the postcode is shared with Tempe and St Peters, a good stretch of Sydenham Road is actually Marrickville, and Melbourne has a Sydenham too. For a semi, add which half. For a warehouse unit, the unit number and the business name.
I learnt why the suburb matters on Boundary Street in December 2007, doing deliveries from our Kingscliff shop. The order said Coolangatta. I walked the Coolangatta side twice before I crossed the road. The house was in Tweed Heads, New South Wales, and she told me I was an hour late. Daylight saving stops halfway across that road. On the Queensland side I was bang on time.
Not sure of their taste? The Australian Natives Bunch heads our best-selling birthday flowers.
It's the bunch I'd send blind. Banksia stems are dense, so a clean cut on its own isn't enough. If whoever gets it splits the base a few centimetres, the stem can actually drink, and the cones hold their shape long after the softer flowers would have gone.
Someone's in hospital, or home and sick of the couch. For a ward, the notes need the hospital, ward and bed: RPA on Missenden Road, Camperdown, or St George on Gray Street, Kogarah. In our experience the ward desk signs for the flowers and a nurse carries them in when there's a moment. At home, add a mobile number in case they're asleep. More get well flowers and hospital flowers are here. Card idea: "Rest up. Takeaway's on me when you're out."
Anna's pick: for a shared ward, the Australian Native Arrangement. Lilies are lovely in a private room, but in a shared one their scent reaches the next bed whether that patient wants it or not. Natives like protea and leucadendron have barely any scent, and the arrangement comes in its own container, so nobody on the ward goes hunting for a vase.
There's a funeral notice, or you've only just heard. In the 2021 Census, 8.9 per cent of Sydenham said Buddhist, and Vietnamese, Cantonese and Thai are among the languages spoken at home. In our experience white suits almost every family, yellow sits well in a Buddhist home, and red is best left out. If you don't know the family's tradition, ask someone close to them, or go white. For the service, send to the funeral director, T.J. Andrews on Enmore Road for one, with the service time in the notes. It's a small thing beside a death, and families still remember who sent something. See our white sympathy flowers and flowers for a funeral service. Card idea: "Holding you all close today."
White lilies, roses, orchids and chrysanthemums are the stems I'd reach for, and the chrysanthemums will outlast a wake that runs for days. For the service, I'd steer you to the White Lily & Rose Sheath. It lies flat on a casket or a stand, so nobody has to find a vase in a hurry. For the house, the Gorgeous White Arrangement.
Some orders don't fit the cards above: an anniversary, the neighbour who fed the cat, a mate who's just moved into a converted warehouse by the railway. Our anniversary flowers and thank-you flowers cover most of it. Anna has a view on the new place.
Nobody who's just moved has unpacked a vase. Send one that arrives in its own, like the Simply Stylish With Chocolates & Vase, and it gets set down and kept going while a wrapped bunch waits in its paper.

Sydenham NSW 2044, in full. Which half of a semi, or the unit and business name for a warehouse near the station. For RPA or St George, the ward and bed. For T.J. Andrews or a church, the service time.
In our experience a ward desk signs for hospital flowers and the funeral director's staff take service flowers. At a house with nobody home, the florist will generally use the spot you name in the notes, or a neighbour. Order before 2pm on a weekday and the flowers are there this afternoon.
The order is confirmed by email, goes to one of our partner florists near Sydenham, and is made up and delivered on the date you chose. If something's wrong, call 1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm on weekdays, or email [email protected], and our team will sort it.
Nobody texts straight away, I've learnt that. The flowers land while the person is at work, or asleep after a night shift (hospitals employ as many Sydenham people as any other industry, which surprised me), and the thank-you turns up days later. In my years on the phones the orders that went sideways were often one missing letter, 14 instead of 14A, so the address is worth a second look before you pay. Quiet usually means it landed.
That's the whole process. In 2009 the orders went out by fax. The rest of it hasn't changed much.
