We've Been Delivering Flowers to Ulladulla Since 2009

There is no wholesale flower market on the South Coast. The closest is Flemington in Sydney, 230 kilometres north, and every stem sold in Ulladulla has already done three hours on a truck before a florist even gets to work with it. That distance is really important. It changes which varieties survive the trip and how long they need to sit in water before anyone touches them. Our partner florists in Ulladulla takes care of the Flemington sourcing and the prep. They build your arrangement fresh by hand and deliver same day. Ring 1300 360 469 or order online before 2pm weekdays or 10am Saturdays and it is there that afternoon. Delivery is $16.95.

Growing up in Sydney in the seventies and eighties, school holidays meant one thing for our family and that was piling into the car for the drive down to Ulladulla with Dad at the wheel and packed to the rafters, with what seemed like every other person in Sydney at the time, yes folks, even back then before it became uber cool. That hill near Milton where you catch the first glimpse of the ocean, the fishing boats in the harbour. For me it was Funland and Space Invaders, I loved that place. These days I run Lily's Florist with my partner (and wife) Siobhan, and we have been delivering flowers to the South Coast since 2009. Read the full story here.

What 230 Kilometres Does to a Flower

Anna, qualified florist with over fifteen years making arrangements before joining us

Conditioning is the bit most people never think about. When stems arrive at a florist in Bondi, they have been off the market floor for maybe forty minutes. Straight into water. They drink, they stabilise, and a couple of hours later they are ready to go. In Ulladulla those same stems have been on a truck for three to four hours. They arrive dehydrated and the stem is already starting to seal up. If the florist skips the soak and goes straight into arranging, you lose two or three days of vase life and the customer never finds out why.

A caller from Sydney rang one Monday wanting to send birthday flowers to her mum in Ulladulla. Her mum had retired down there a few years earlier. She asked me what she should order and I asked what mattered more, the photo or how long they lasted. She said lasting. So I talked her through why the florist's choice was the better option for a town this far from the market. The florist picks whatever conditioned best that morning, whatever has the most energy stored in the petals. No locked-in recipe from a website photo. Her mum rang her that night. Twelve days later, still going.

It is the boring part of floristry. No one takes a photo of stems sitting in a bucket. But that soak is the difference between twelve days in the vase and four. The florist who respects it gets results like that caller's mum got. The one who rushes it because there are ten orders to fill by lunchtime gets the complaint email and wonders what went wrong.

Your order goes to a florist in or near Ulladulla who deals with this every week. Flemington stems, three-hour highway run, proper soak before anything gets arranged. Fresh, hand built, delivered same day.

What to Send to Ulladulla

Ulladulla's median age is 48, and it climbs every year. The sea changers and retirees keep arriving from Sydney and Canberra. Younger people head north for work, Wollongong or the city, and some of them do not come back. That means a lot of the flower orders we process for this part of the South Coast come from adult children sending to parents and grandparents. The occasions lean heavier toward sympathy, thinking of you, and milestone birthdays than they would somewhere younger. Our sympathy flowers are among the most ordered categories for the broader Milton-Ulladulla area.

Sending sympathy flowers to Ulladulla?

Milton Ulladulla Funeral Services on Camden Street is the main funeral director for the district. Their chapel seats about a hundred with overflow under a covered awning outside. Sandridge Cemetery in Mollymook is the main burial ground, established 1893, with separate Catholic, Anglican, and Presbyterian portions still clearly marked. The Italian fishing families who settled here after the war still put flowers on graves regularly at the Catholic section. For wreaths or sheaths, one of our partner florists near Ulladulla will coordinate timing with the funeral director. The flowers need to be there before guests arrive but not so early they have been sitting for hours.

Anna, qualified florist

Colour is everything with sympathy. Bright colours at a funeral are a mistake. I know the person ordering wants to send something cheerful but that is not what the room needs. Whites, soft creams, muted greens. Calming. They do not fight for attention when everyone in the room is already struggling. If the family is Italian, white chrysanthemums are traditional and expected. The florist covering this area will know that without being told.

Sending thinking of you flowers to Ulladulla?

Ulladulla has a significant retirement and aged care population. IRT Sarah Claydon in Milton has 141 care suites including dementia and palliative care. Hometown Australia Suncoast and Seabreeze Village both serve the over-55s independent living community along the Princes Highway. A lot of the thinking of you orders we handle for this district come from sons and daughters in Sydney or Canberra who moved away for work and want their parents to know they are not forgotten. For aged care deliveries, our florist delivers to reception during business hours and the staff take it from there.

Anna on aged care deliveries

Aged care rooms are small. I worked with enough facilities over the years to know that a big bouquet takes up the entire bedside table and becomes a problem for the nurses changing sheets and moving equipment. Go compact. Chrysanthemums and alstroemeria hold up under the fluorescent lights and the recycled air in those buildings. Roses look beautiful on day one but they are wilting by day three in that environment. If the family is only visiting once a week, you need stems that can go the distance without anyone fussing over them.

Sending birthday flowers to Ulladulla?

Birthday orders for this part of the South Coast skew older. Seventieth, eightieth, ninetieth. Long-held family homes where the same person has been collecting the mail for thirty years. Our birthday flowers range includes everything from bright mixed bunches to more refined arrangements. If you are sending from interstate and you have no idea what your mum or dad would like, that is exactly what the florist's choice option is for. The florist works with whatever is freshest in the cool room that morning.

Anna's take

Birthdays are the fun ones. You get to use colour and energy and nobody is going to be upset if the arrangement is loud. Bright gerberas, mixed seasonal stems, something with movement and height. For a town like Ulladulla where every stem has already done 230 kilometres on a truck, florist's choice makes the most sense for birthdays. The florist grabs what soaked up the most water overnight, the stems with the most life left in them. The recipient opens the door and their whole face changes. That is what you are paying for.

Sending flowers to Milton Ulladulla Hospital?

Milton Ulladulla Hospital is small. Six-bed emergency department, a general ward, oncology outpatients, palliative care. It is on the Princes Highway in Milton, about seven kilometres from Ulladulla town centre. From what our partner florists have found, flowers go to the nurses' station and the staff run them through to the patient. There is no dedicated delivery process at a hospital this size. For get well flowers, boxed arrangements are the practical choice because the patient does not need to find a vase, scissors, or bench space.

Anna on hospital flowers

Six-bed emergency department, shared general ward. That is a small hospital. The bedside tables are tiny and they are doing double duty for water cups, phones, tissues. A big arrangement gets moved to the floor or the windowsill within an hour and nobody waters it again. I would send gerberas in a box every time for a hospital this size. Cheerful, sturdy, no loose pollen drifting onto equipment, no strong scent bothering the patient in the next bed, and the box is the vase. Nothing to find, nothing to cut. Just set it down.

Sending thank you flowers to Ulladulla?

In a town of seven thousand permanent residents, a thank you gets noticed. Thank you flowers for a teacher at Ulladulla Public School or St Michael's. A nurse at the hospital who stayed past her shift. The neighbour who fed the cat and brought the bins in for two weeks over Christmas. They do not need to be big arrangements. Something well made, seasonal, with a thoughtful card message. The card does as much work as the stems.

From the phone calls

People rang all the time unsure how much to spend on a thank you. Fifty dollars, a hundred, more? I told every one of them the same thing. The card message does at least half the work. Write "Thank you for feeding the cat while we were in Batemans Bay, the garden looks incredible too" on a $50 arrangement and it will mean more than a $120 bouquet with "Thanks for everything" on the card. Spend the time on the words. Let the florist handle the stems.

Not sure what to send?

If you are staring at the screen and every arrangement looks the same, go with Florist's Choice at $71.95. The florist picks from whatever is looking strongest that day. No locked-in recipe. For Ulladulla, where the stems have already travelled 230 kilometres, that flexibility means the florist can lean into whatever survived the journey in the best shape. Flowers under $60 are also available if you want to keep it simple. Same quality, smaller arrangement.

Anna's advice

Florist's choice is the one I recommended more than any other product when I was taking calls. People would ring without knowing what they wanted and they would be embarrassed about it. I told them that is the whole point. Give me the colour preference, I pass it to the florist, and the florist builds something from whatever is genuinely fresh that day. No fighting stale stock to match a website photo. The callers who trusted the process almost always rang back happier than the ones who tried to micromanage from three hours away.

How to Order Flowers to Ulladulla

Phone: 1300 360 469, 7am to 6pm weekdays. A lot of South Coast customers prefer to ring rather than order online. That is fine. We are based in Australia, real people, not a call centre script.

Same day cutoff: 2pm weekdays, 10am Saturdays. After midday the cabin of a delivery vehicle starts climbing past 25 degrees. An arrangement that sits in that for an extra hour loses a day or two of vase life, and the customer has no way of knowing. The cutoff gives the florist enough room to get the flowers prepped, arranged, and out the door before the afternoon heat does its damage.

No Sunday delivery. Flower markets close Saturday afternoon. A Sunday arrangement would be built from Friday stock. Two days old before it even reaches the vase. Some businesses offer it anyway. We tried being honest about it instead.

Delivery: $16.95. A same-day delivery run in a regional area like the South Coast actually costs more than that. We absorb part of the fee. The florist receives the full delivery amount, not a discounted rate. Order before 2pm today and it is there this afternoon.

What Our Customers Say

This one is specific. Kathleen Searle sent flowers to Ulladulla and wrote about it on Feefo, the independent verified reviews platform whose ratings appear in Google search results. We cannot edit or delete reviews on Feefo. Here is what she said:

"Didn't really explore website, used it to find phone number (time poor). Sent flowers to Ulladulla NSW and the feedback was absolute high praise - beautiful arrangement with the biggest rose amongst it that smelled divine! Will use again, thank you."

Kathleen Searle · verified customer · Read more reviews on Feefo

The product Kathleen ordered is the Bright Mixed Arrangement. Anna looked at the listing and had plenty to say about it.

That arrangement is doing a lot. Pink roses, yellow and red tulips, orange roses, purple statice, green filler, all packed into a square box. Six or seven different stem types competing for attention. Most florists would play it safer with three or four. It works though. Reads as vibrant, not chaotic, which tells me the florist understood visual weight. The dark roses sit low and anchor the arrangement. The tulips lift above them because they are lighter to the eye. The statice fills the gaps without crowding. None of that is accidental.

Kathleen mentioned the biggest rose smelling divine. That is the real tell. Roses only produce strong fragrance when the sugar content in the petals is high enough to fuel the scent compounds. Tight buds barely smell at all. They need time to open at their own pace, not be forced. So when a recipient three hours from Flemington says a rose smelled divine, it means that stem was picked at the right maturity, soaked properly on arrival, and allowed to bloom naturally in the shop before it went into the arrangement. In a town this far from the market, that is not a given. The florist earned it.

After You Order

Siobhan, Andrew's partner and the other half of Lily's Florist

Once your order is in, we route it to a partner florist close to the Ulladulla area. They source from Flemington, which is a long way from here (three hours on the highway, every stem has already done a full day's work before the florist even touches it), so the first thing that happens is a proper soak. Then they build your arrangement by hand and run the delivery same day. The Princes Highway is the only road through town and during school holidays and Easter, when half of Sydney seems to be heading south at the same time, that intersection near Rowen's Arcade turns into a car park, so the florist plans the delivery run for mornings. You do not need to think about any of that, but I thought you might want to know.

If something goes wrong, and look, sometimes it does because flowers are perishable and logistics are imperfect and we are not going to pretend otherwise, send us a photo from the front and one from above within 24 hours to [email protected] or ring 1300 360 469. The photos are how we go back to the florist and figure out what happened. Andrew and I read every complaint. Not a department. Us.

Ulladulla is a delivery area we know well, actually it was one of the first. Our partner florist down here was a shop called Flowers On Wason, back in late 2008 before we even had the Lily's Florist name sorted (we were still running the Kingscliff shop at that point, organic soaps and baby bottles and a handful of flower orders, bit of a mess honestly). The florist covering the area now knows which holiday rentals have a reception desk and which ones are just a lockbox on the fence. The retirement villages along the highway have community managers during business hours, so that is straightforward. And in January, when nobody answers the door because they are at the beach, the covered verandahs are the safe drop spot. But what would we know about that.

About the Author

Andrew
Co-founder, Lily's Florist

I spent every school holiday in Ulladulla as a kid. Funland, the harbour, fish and chips, the lot. So when we started building the flower delivery network, this was one of the first areas I wanted to cover. By late 2008 we had connected with our first Ulladulla florist, a shop called Flowers On Wason. No franchise fees, no complicated contracts. A simple agreement. We would send her orders from people wanting Ulladulla delivery, she would add extra flowers to cover our small commission, everyone wins. That landing page, this one you are reading right now, started as hers. It has changed a lot since then.

Before all of that, Siobhan and I bought a flower shop in Kingscliff in 2006 against our accountant's advice, with a baby due in seven months and no experience at all. An old Yellow Pages ad kept sending calls for flower deliveries to places we had never heard of. Taree. Townsville. Coffs Harbour. One florist in Murwillumbah said yes to our first partnership request. From that one yes it grew to over 800 florists across Australia, and the decisions still get made at the dinner table with our girls rolling their eyes at us. Read the full story here.
