How Unanderra Became a Foundation Location
Back in 2008, we were still in Kingscliff, still getting calls from that old Yellow Pages ad (yeah, the giant yellow book), still figuring out if this model would even work whilst being learning how to be new parents to baby Asha. People would call asking us to send flowers to places like Unanderra and we'd been turning them away for months. The thought of calling florists in areas we'd never been to, explaining our weird idea (no membership fees, just add more flowers to cover commission), honestly it was nerve-wracking. I still feel a little anxiety writing and thinking about it even after 18 years!
One afternoon in around our birthdays in August 2008, probably after saying "sorry, we can't help" for the hundredth time to a customer in the Tweed wanting to send flowers outside of the Tweed, we found a florist in the area. I remember calling them, explaining who we were, what we were trying to do. They said yes. Just like that. One of our early believers when we had no track record, no brand, just an idea and a lot of hope. At that point we had already partnered with florists in Banora Point, Byron Bay, Coffs Harbour, Taree but to name a few.
This very page you're on right now, and our main Wollongong page? Built in 2008 for that partnership. Before we had 800 florists across Australia, we had to start somewhere. Unanderra was one of those foundation locations, first 10 locations, that proved the model could actually work. I am still grateful for that I have to say, even after all these long years.
Why Australian Natives Are Massive in Unanderra

I reckon it's the area. You've got the Illawarra escarpment right there, bushland, national parks, that proper Australian landscape. Natives just make sense for Unanderra. They're hardy, like the region itself, working class and resilient. They last way longer than roses, two to three weeks compared to five days if you're lucky. Dan from one of his reviews said it simple: "Flowers beautiful and long lasting." That's natives in four words.
Proteas, banksias, leucadendrons - these are proper statement flowers, not your typical service station bouquet. Sue ordered them in August and noted how easy the whole process was, "beautiful flower... delivery was quick." Josephine went with natives too, called them "beautiful flowers" with "seamless delivery." When people use words like beautiful three times across different reviews, they mean it.

How Lily's Florist Actually Works
We're not the florist, let's be clear about that. We partner with real florist shops in the Wollongong and Illawarra region. When you order flowers to Unanderra through us, your order goes to a real person in a real shop. They make your flowers fresh that morning, a local courier or the florist themselves (to save money and make more profit per order) delivers them same day if you order by 2pm on weekdays or 10am on Saturdays.
Not warehouse flowers. Not posted overnight by Australia Post. These are proper florists who've been doing this for years. Same day delivery Monday to Saturday, Sundays we don't deliver except Mother's Day.
When You'd Send Flowers to Unanderra
Maybe your parents or grandparents live in Unanderra and you're up in Sydney or elsewhere. Can't make it down this weekend but you still want them to know you're thinking of them. Send natives, they'll last until you visit.

Siobhan and Andrew here. We started Lily's Florist in 2009, but we were building relationships with florists like the one in Unanderra in 2008 and even 2007 way before Lily's Florist became a thing, testing the waters, seeing if anyone would take a chance on us. Now we've got over 800 partner florists but the values haven't changed.
Our customer service team is in Armidale NSW, they're all Australian, we answer the phone 6 days a week. The kids are 18 and 14 now (where did that time go?). Business decisions still get made at the dinner table, not in a boardroom.
