Flowers to Aroona, at the Door Before the Heat

Flowers will not carry the weight of what has happened, and you already know that. What they can do is stand in for you at a service you may be too far away to reach, and say the thing there are no words for.

There are really two gestures here. Flowers to the family home say thinking of you to the people left behind. Flowers for the service itself are a different job, and the timing is everything, because a late arrival there is the one mistake you cannot take back. A lot of services around here run through Gregson & Weight on Gregson Place in Caloundra, the family-run funeral house that has served the Coast since 1972, and from what our florists have found, the move is to address those to the funeral director with the service date and the person's name on them. They keep their own memorial gardens too, so for many families it does not end at the service, the flowers come back for the placing of the ashes, or a first anniversary at the wall. Get the order in the day before where you can. For condolences to the family home, a few days either side is fine.

White is the safe road for a traditional Catholic or Anglican family. Lilies, white roses, chrysanthemum, and it reads as respect. But Aroona is a suburb where close to half the people put down no religion, and for those families a white wreath can feel like a stranger picked it. A woman rang me from Bendigo once about her father's service up this way. She did not want a wreath, she wanted what he loved, and he had walked the heath by the lake most mornings for thirty years, so we built it around banksia and grevillea off the same heath. If the card stumps you, thinking of you and your family is plenty. Write it out by hand if you can. The flowers are gone in a week, but the card tends to get kept, tucked in a drawer or the back of a book, and read again on the hard days for a long time after.

You do not need an occasion for these. Sometimes it is a parent in care you cannot get to as often as you would like, sometimes it is just that it has been too long. And if part of you hesitates, wondering whether flowers might be a fuss rather than a comfort when someone is properly unwell, from what our florists have seen they almost never are. Being thought of is the thing people hold onto.

A lot of these go to the aged-care homes just south, places like Aminya on West Terrace, or to a quiet day at home. Caloundra Health Service up the road is the region's palliative ward now, and flowers tend to be welcome there, where they matter more in that room than almost anywhere. The thing our florists watch for is scent in a small shared space. Flowers go to reception either way, and the staff carry them through to the bedside. A thinking of you bunch lands well here, or a get well arrangement if they are on the mend. For a serious admission or a new baby, that is over at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital at Birtinya now, not Caloundra, and the flowers go to the ward desk the same way.

For a room like that, skip the tall hand-tied bunch in a wrap. Send a box arrangement instead. It sits flat and does not tip, where a tall wrapped bunch takes up half the bedside table and becomes a job for the nurses, a vase to find, water to change. A box just sits there and behaves. I steered aged-care callers toward one for years for exactly that reason. Keep the stems familiar too, roses, daisies, a few natives, nothing with a heavy perfume that takes over a small shared room. For someone living with dementia, familiar is the whole point. A bloom they recognise lands better than the fanciest thing in the cooler. On the card, thinking of you does the job.

A birthday is the one where the distance really bites, and if this is the third year running you have sent flowers instead of sitting at the table, you also want something she has not seen before. The flowers arrive at a table you cannot sit at, and there is always a bit of apology folded into the celebration. No shame in it. They still say you would have been there if you could.

Aroona makes this easier than most places. With so many people home through the day, a birthday delivery for Mum usually gets handed over first go rather than sitting out. If the house does happen to be empty, leave a safe-place note at checkout for a shaded spot out of that western afternoon sun, and ask for a morning run in summer so they are inside before the heat builds.

Most people reach for roses for Mum, and in a Queensland summer that is a three-day arrangement. A soft rose on a warm Aroona table opens fast and looks tired by the weekend. If you want her still looking at them next week, lean on lisianthus for the rose look without the fragility, or a bright native mix that treats the heat like nothing. For a milestone, a seventieth or an eightieth, ask the florist to build around one good feature bloom rather than a big loose bunch. It reads as considered, which is what a round number deserves. The card does not need a speech either. Happy seventieth Mum, I wish I was there says the lot, and she will read it more than once.

If none of those three is quite your situation, that is completely normal. Most orders do not fit a neat box.

When someone could not decide, I pointed them at the Australian natives nearly every time for an address up here. Banksia, grevillea, leucadendron, half of them grow in the wallum heath on Aroona's own northern edge, in the conservation park along the lake, so they are built for exactly this humidity. They shrug off the moisture that freckles a soft rose and hold a good fortnight in a warm room. They suit nearly any reason you would send flowers, a thank you, a thinking of you, a quiet happy birthday, and they do not look like the thing everyone else got. Tell the florist the occasion and let them pick the best of what came in that morning.
