We had a list. Five towns, scribbled on the back of a real estate magazine in our Drummoyne apartment. July 2006, pregnant, desperate for a seachange. Byron Bay, Ballina, Kingscliff (never been there), Bangalow, somewhere on the Gold Coast. The plan? Visit them all, pick one, buy a business, start fresh. Flying into Ballina Airport, that first glimpse of the Richmond River spreading out like silver ribbon, we thought "this could be it." Byron was too expensive, Gold Coast too hectic, we ended up choosing Kingscliff. But Ballina? Ballina never really let us go.

How Ballina Became Essential to Us

Funny how life works. We picked Kingscliff, opened our flower shop there. And the phone in our shop kept ringing with people wanting flowers delivered TO Ballina, from people in the Tweed, not many, but enough to pique our interest over roughly 6 months. "Can you deliver near the Big Prawn?" they'd ask. Back then it was still on the highway, before the bypass, before it moved.

By 2009, we'd tracked enough Ballina requests to know we needed a partner florist there. The first one we called said yes immediately, but actually our OG florist partner was located in Byron Bay and was called Flowers On the Run. She had awesome, and cheap, couriers who made the trip daily, so it was a 'no brainer'. She got it - Ballina was growing, retirees moving in, young families discovering what we'd seen that first day. The hospital, the nursing homes, the riverside apartments, they all needed flowers. We now have partner florists in Ballina though.

What really sealed it was the travelers. People flying into Ballina Airport, wanting flowers sent to Mum in Brisbane, or ordering from Brisbane to meet them at Ballina Airport. The interconnectedness of this Northern Rivers region became crystal clear.

Mother's Day Flowers to Ballina

When Two Hours Changes Everything

Kelli Schulze from Tasmania absolutely nailed what we're about: "My daughter-in-law in Ballina loved her flowers and the bubbly. Very prompt delivery ordered at 10am delivered at 12pm." Tasmania to Ballina, two hours from order to delivery. That's not magic, that's just good systems and brilliant partner florists.

People think interstate flower orders are complicated. They're not. Kelli orders online or calls us, we route it to our Ballina partner florist, they make it with fresh flowers from their shop, deliver it themselves. No shipping, no boxes, no overnight courier nonsense. Her daughter-in-law got flowers made by a real Ballina florist who probably shops at the same Woolies.

The "prompt delivery" Kelli mentions? That's because our Ballina florists are actual shops in actual Ballina. They know Tuesday is pension day (busy), they know school pickup times affect delivery routes, they know which retirement villages need reception notification. Order before 2PM weekdays and same-day delivery is standard, not special.

The Occasions That Define Ballina

Ballina District Hospital keeps us consistently busy. New babies, surgery recoveries, those "thinking of you" moments. But it's the retirement villages and nursing homes that really show Ballina's character. Mother's Day is absolutely mental - Crowley Care, Palm Lake Resort, RSL LifeCare. Every room wants flowers.

"Welcome to your new home" arrangements are huge in Ballina. All those seachangers, just like we were, starting fresh. We send flowers to new houses in Cumbalum, retirement moves to East Ballina, downsizers near the river. Anniversary flowers to couples who've been here 50 years, birthday surprises for kids who've moved to Brisbane but haven't forgotten Mum.

Beach weddings need prep flowers delivered to hotels. Airport pickups with surprise bouquets. Sympathy flowers to churches we now know by name. Get well arrangements to the rehabilitation ward. Congratulations to new businesses opening on River Street. Ballina loves celebrations, commiserations, and everything in between.

Knowing Ballina Like a Local (Almost)

We deliver everywhere in Ballina. The CBD around River Street, East Ballina with its riverside homes, West Ballina spreading inland, Cumbalum with all the new developments. The hospital, Ballina Fair, RSL, every retirement village. We know the Big Prawn moved (that confused everyone for years). We know parking near Cherry Street is impossible on market days.

Our partner florists navigate the one-way streets, know which aged care facilities have tricky delivery windows, understand that "near the lighthouse" means East Ballina, not the actual lighthouse. They handle the rural edges too - Alstonville, Wardell, even coordinate with our Lennox Head partners when boundaries blur.

That Ballina bypass changed everything, but our florists adapted. Old Pacific Highway addresses versus new ones, explaining to customers that the Big Prawn isn't where it used to be, finding houses in developments that didn't exist when we first flew into Ballina Airport all those years ago.

Hospital Arrangements to Ballina

The Path Not Taken, Still Taken

That list from 2006 is probably still somewhere in a box under the stairs at home. Byron Bay, Ballina, Kingscliff, Bangalow, Gold Coast. We chose Kingscliff, but Ballina chose us back. Every time we drive to Ballina, like when I did my boat license there a few months ago, or met my dad there last week who lives in Taree, I sometimes think...what if we had chosen Ballina instead?

But maybe we did, in a way. Through our partner florists, through orders like Kelli's from Tasmania, through thousands of flowers delivered along the Richmond River. We're still that same couple from the seachange list, just with two kids now (Asha and Ivy), still making decisions at dinner tables, not boardrooms.

Kelli ended her review with "would highly recommend." That's not just about flowers. That's about trust. Trusting someone in Tasmania can order flowers for Ballina and they'll arrive in two hours, fresh, beautiful, made by someone who knows Ballina like we wished we could have.

Ready to send flowers to Ballina? That seachange feeling never gets old.

PS and a little sidenote: If you had taken the time to read our foundation story you would know that we pivoted slightly to an organic shop with an online store and we still sold flowers in the shop. When we sold the organic online store the people who bought it actually lived in Ballina, which is kind of cute given we almost ended up in Ballina.
